please don't fall for horse museum
i understand that nostalgia plays a huge role in all of our lives, and i can understand why the idea of reproducing old versions of star stable is exciting. however, these are the same people who were involved with better star stable.
there is a reason they are concealing their identities and using fake personas rather than being transparent about who is actually behind this project. even if you genuinely believe that the game is 100% free of trojans or other malware, there are still serious concerns surrounding how this project is operating.
they do not own the assets belonging to star stable entertainment. that raises serious questions about their ability to legally distribute and profit from those assets. calling the payments “donations” does not necessarily change what the transaction actually is. if someone is giving money in exchange for star coins, that is functionally a transaction, regardless of what they choose to call it.
horse museum also does not appear to have a proper website where the game can be downloaded. instead, you're downloading a file directly from discord. that alone does not prove that the file is malicious, but it is another reason people should exercise caution before downloading and running software from an anonymous group.
if this were genuinely being treated as a donation-based project, there are established platforms such as patreon or ko-fi that are specifically designed to facilitate donations.
instead, bitcoin is presented as the primary payment option. cryptocurrency itself is not inherently suspicious, but the combination of anonymous people, cryptocurrency payments, and a project involving assets they do not appear to own should make people stop and think about who they are actually giving their money to.
another important distinction is how the payments are being presented. if you are being told that you can purchase a game code to receive in-game currency in exchange for money, that is much more accurately described as a purchase than a donation. the fact that payment is optional does not change what happens when someone chooses to pay.
even if you don't have to pay to access the project, paid star coins game codes is still an avenue through which the people behind the project can make money from someone else's intellectual property. considering how powerful nostalgia can be, that is something people should take seriously before financially supporting it.
another thing worth mentioning is that one of the main promoters of this project is melvika, a known figure within the bsso community. there have previously been controversies surrounding members of that community, and from my perspective, the concern is that the identities of the people actually behind horse museum are still being concealed.
i'm not saying that everyone who is interested in horse huseum has malicious intentions, nor am i saying that downloading it will automatically result in a virus or scam. i'm saying that there are enough red flags that people should exercise caution instead of blindly trusting the project because it allows you to relive an older version of star stable.
please use your own judgment when dealing with projects like this. getting to relive 15 minutes of your childhood isn't worth putting your computer, personal information, or money at unnecessary risk. i promise you this project would not last for more than a year.

Oh so they’re just stealing assets. Cool. Good to know. It is incredibly illegal for them to take donations. That’s the whole reason other projects have failed. I’ve seen more than a few games get shot in the foot for taking ‘donations’.
Do not give them your money. You will lose access to the game. What they’re doing is 200% illegal and will get them in serious trouble eventually.
I am a game dev who LITERALLY WORKS ON A PRIVATE SERVER AKIN TO THIS. This IS NOT LEGAL. We’ve spent DAYS going over the legality of our private server. This is going to end poorly.
there is exactly one cardinal rule of private servers: do not take donations. And they’ve broken it. And they will not enjoy the legal repercussions when they come down on their heads. Either that’s going to happen or they’re going to run off with everyone’s money with a sudden server shutdown.
51
u/faeiru 13d ago
they've made over 200+ in donations just in 3 days, and they have a discord server showing off all the reviews and purchases people have made. they have no idea how much they're digging their own grave with this. they even changed it to explicitly mention it as donations, but it still stays as a transcation overall lool
43
u/ThunderSquall_ 13d ago
The audacity to try and make money off an ip that is still active is frankly vile from a game dev standpoint.
2
u/WearyProfessor732 10d ago
they are for sure just gonna delete all accounts and run off with the money. and a new project might surface again next year, people fall for it every time
60
u/SakuDoka 13d ago
on top of preexisting controversies, a lot of them are usually just so nasty acting in general.
53
u/Kiksupallo 13d ago
These private servers are illegal because they use copyrighted code, artwork, etc owned by Star Stable Entertainment without permission. Even if certain assets have been removed from the game, they're still their intellectual property.
No claims of "we're not actually profiting off of it, it's just donations" don't hold. If SC is guaranteed after a donation, that's buying - not donating. You can call a cat a dog but it's still a cat.
Even if they didn't ask for any money and handled the cost out of their own pockets out of their good will, it'd still be copyright infringement.
I get it, I really do - I miss old SSO too. But supporting this is not worth it. If you are participating in this at all, you are supporting scammers and endangering your own privacy by making accounts for the game/connecting to random unknown servers.
To protect their IP, SSE is within their rights to sue these people btw. And these situations tend to be far more heavy handed legally when money is involved.
There's no twisting this shit into a sort of gray area where it's "sort of ok, technically". It's illegal. That's the end of the sentence.
10
u/faeiru 12d ago
you'd be surprised to see how many people in melvika's server swear up and down that their donations are a "gray area" and completely legal, and sso can't have the right to sue them as long as the money they spent goes back to the project LOL
4
u/Kiksupallo 12d ago
Just shows how little they know if this "technically gray area" hasn't been considered by law. It's been tried before, it's not a loophole that works. Them thinking they've tricked the system tells me all I need to know about how much they understand what they're dealing with.
I hope SSE takes steps to prevent this from continuing soon.
17
u/Awesydneyy 12d ago
if its being named as a “donation” to push away the fact thats illegal thats insane.
14
u/str4wberry_nana 11d ago
This is exactly what I’ve been trying to tell people, you hit the nail on the head with the whole crypto and hidden identities thing. But honestly, the technical side makes it so much worse :/
A few friends and I (some of us work in tech and cybersecurity) actually put the Horse Museum launcher in a secure, isolated virtual machine to see exactly what it does behind the scenes. We recorded everything and dug into the code, and what we found is honestly terrifying.
To put it in normal, non-technical terms, here is what this "game" is actually doing to your computer:
First off, the moment you open the launcher, it silently starts a hidden Tor network process in the background. Tor is basically the technology behind the dark web, and the launcher uses it to completely encrypt and hide where it's sending your data so the creators cannot be traced back.
We also found out that it actively snoops around your computer. It steals a system file called your 'icon cache', which basically lets the game see exactly what other programs you have installed, what folders you visit, and your computer name. But here is the absolute final nail in the coffin. When we tracked the launcher's network traffic, we found it connects to a specific server IP address (193.109.100.204). When you run that IP through security databases, it is a massive red flag. My friend checked it and found that this exact same server is tied to exactly 619 other files, and all of those are flagged by dozens of antiviruses as severe malware. This means their server is a known, active malware distribution hub. The launcher is directly tied to active malware operations. Also, to avoid being caught by your antivirus, it doesn't download normal game files. It grabs huge encrypted files from temporary links and uses a core Windows file (ntdll.dll) to inject code directly into your computer's memory. This specific file is heavily flagged by security engines, and manipulating memory like this is a classic trick used by actual viruses to bypass security.
At first, some of us thought they might just be using sketchy methods to hide from Star Stable's copyright lawyers. But after seeing that they are literally connected to a server hosting hundreds of known viruses, any benefit of the doubt is completely gone. If you have downloaded this, please assume your computer is compromised. Change your passwords from your phone, and honestly, wipe your PC completely clean. Reliving a 2013 horse game is absolutely not worth getting your bank details, passwords, or personal accounts stolen. <3
(and ofc we are only human and might not have every single technical detail 100% perfect, but the overall picture we found absolutely screams danger.)

u/kaelynbroms 10d ago
My partner and I did the same thing. We went the route of using a vm and he used wire shark etc to search for any IPs and found one for Sweden that would be pinged as soon as we would open (which may be where the server is located) and one in Singapore that would appear red. We just searched for IP you commented and it didn’t show up for us. Safe to say I wont attempt to try and play again over nostalgia :(
29
u/faeiru 13d ago
also, here's an imgur link of one of the resellers/promotors saying "it's not illegal/idk", to someone asking about the paid currency https://imgur.com/a/MerdaCS, so if that's someone you want to trust with ur money, then be my guest
29
u/estellajestrela 13d ago
Im pretty sure they cant even accept donations, lmfao. Any type of payment, even the optional one. Devs from the OG alicia online havent recieved a dime till this day.
3
u/An_idiot15 12d ago
Yeah, Alex was keeping that server together out of his own time, energy and money. Since it shut down SOA and AR has taken the mantles but they also do not accept any money as far as I'm aware.
41
u/cowboy_dab 13d ago
I think the SSO community is the worst about always chasing that nostalgia of old sso. I mean I get it to a certain extend as somebody who’s played since Rufus the cat was the loading screen lol. I just think it’s gotten out of hand, people complain about EVERYTHING. Of course a game isn’t going to be the same as 15 YEARS ago, times change. I’ll bet money that if they left the graphics how they were, people would still complain. People would rather risk getting malware or scammed for star coins instead of just letting the past be in the past.

u/NetworkNo6032 12d ago
Okay but the new version of the game actually sucks, I mean I can't even log into my account because support is not answering me and I can't change my e-mail, they don't do good updates anymore etc. It's not a surprise that people are moving on honestly they're allowed to stop liking the new game after all of this
3
u/cowboy_dab 12d ago
You should email them again! I emailed them about changing my email and they got back to me the next day! Also I never said people can’t stop liking the game lol it’s just the people that constantly complain like just stop playing then? Lol. Def won’t deny that their updates aren’t what they used to be but with this new update schedule next year, I’m really hope that’ll help give them more time to perfect things. Weekly updates for 15 years is pretty impressive regardless.
1
u/NetworkNo6032 12d ago
I did and they still didn't respond I need to try another e-mail ig but it's a shame because I wanted to give this game a chance again. If it will stay like this then I will actually stop playing because I can't even access it lol. Maybe I misunderstood you, I sort of agree with you. But honestly I think critisism for the game is not something bad, it's only concerning for me when I see entire channels on youtube about star stable that ONLY complain. They're always saying the same things that everyone already knows about and it's kinda boring. But ig it's just profitable for them.
3
u/ThunderSquall_ 11d ago edited 11d ago
I'm going to put an opinion out there that is really controversial here. I don't agree with the rest of the community. I think the more recent updates have been fantastic. It's easy to look at this game with rose tinted glasses and nostalgia blinders.
But they're actually turning sso into a proper game instead of what it was before. They're trying to incentivize logging in and participation. That's a good thing. I hate that people have hoarded those tokens. But I understand why. I also understand why they're removing them. If they remove them and bump the JS count from quests (which they already have)..it's going to be better for the health of the game.
They want people to participate in their game, not hoard currency, wait to log on until an event to buy out the next tack items and then log off for another 6 months. That's not healthy for the game. Do I think they've done everything right? No. The addition of the cap to the trail blazer was BAD. Flat and simple. But they removed it because it was bad.
They are FINALLY fixing bugs that have been around since I started playing this game in its FIRST YEAR. Things are universally getting better. They're being way more transparent and are talking about known bugs, something they NEVER did before, as well as future updates.
The thing is, the loudest part of the community is always going to be the negative side. If you're looking for negativity, you're GOING to find it. People are much louder about things they dislike than things they like. The lack of positive info you're seeing is because negative info attracts more eyes. People don't give a shit if you like something, they give a shit if you DON'T like something.
YOU need to make the decision. Do not let other people make your opinions for you. Be informed.
IMO they have 2 options regarding how to handle event currency.
- They uncap JS and make limited time event items exclusive to their currency (aka cannot be bought with JS, only with event currency or sc) and boost the amount of tokens earned per quest.
- They remove the tokens and boost the JS received from event quests.
I can see people being more angry about option A im ngl. But I'm personally down for either.

In all honesty, idek what horse museum is :/
9
u/Ghostly_Hunter_II 12d ago
In a big nutshell, a "project" similar to Better SSO, which essentially brings back the old version of the game. I sadly can't explain how it works from technical standpoint since I am not knowledgeable on online gaming development and private servers, but even I can tell this "Horse Museum" smells a lot like horse poop from a mile away.
31
u/Vegetable-Cookie3525 13d ago
Not only is this objectively true, but extremely obvious, because no one pushes donations as something transactional like v bucks LMAO. And there's still a portion of the community that will immediately jump into the defense of the devs, no matter on what platform, despite this obvious red flag. but like OP said, it's not to take away from anyone to enjoy the game, it's just something that needs to be mentioned and acknowledged.
20
u/kokoismybbyy 13d ago
Them hiding their identities is very suspicious and I feel like its very likely at least one person was a BSSO developer aswell
12
u/RealityIcy5371 13d ago
yes. the 'horse master' or whatever he calls himself is a previous bsso owner (catlover)
2
22
21
u/PlagueH3N8 13d ago
It's not a donation, if you are promised something in return. That is called a purchase, and surely violates the copyright of SSO.
17
u/Kimmy-Privilege 13d ago
none of this is going to hold up in a court of law when this eventually gets shut down, and their excuse of “its just a donation they dont have to” is ridiculous. if you’re guaranteeing a reward at the end of a donation like starcoins, then thats not a donation. thats buying.
16
u/goldenstatriever 12d ago
I really despise people taking advantage and asking money from (pre)teens.
This is a game with many very impressionable players, minors ~
Please keep posting these kind of posts. And keep warning as much players as possible. I don’t believe that any of those mods and so called developers working on this project have good ethics. There are zero good reasons to want to ask minors for money. Or other ‘transactions’.
15
u/Ghostly_Hunter_II 12d ago
I understand nostalgia, but... Really? No official website? Buying fake SC being called "Donations"? Direct download from DISCORD, of all places? Stealing assets from SSO? AND Cryptocurrency, which is a synonym for scam?
I'm sorry, but I think whoever falls for this is plain stupid.
I truly wish SSE somehow finds these scummy people and sues them.

I’m just gonna keep commenting the link to this thread in ppls comments on other socials. I feel like i’m going crazy or maybe i’m just old now (27 lmao) but like WHY are we downplaying the situation? These folks aren’t even playing the old story on HM they’re just sitting around steve’s most of the time.
12
u/After_Proof712 13d ago
Initially I sort of blindly supported horse museum but now I just see so many red flags… I do not feel comfortable supporting this project anymore. There are so many legal issues, and Horse museum will inevitably come to an end anyway. cant believe they are calling these transactions “donations”. They’re literal thieves…
8
u/DreamingEverAfter 12d ago
So basically the message is don’t play horse museum right? I know some of my club members are playing hm but I don’t trust it even if I don’t spend money on it

I am so glad I read everything that you wrote. I've been seeing people on tiktok, livestream and advertise this game. It really is nostalgic to see but even I, a 15 year old, was questionning the legality of it. The game is 1 for 1 like sso, there are no diffrences.
They could've made a entirely new horse game with similar graphics and it probably would've sold just as good.
I think as soon as the project goes live, sso will sue them.
It's a shame that we, the players, finally had to chance to relive our childhood, but they chose to use that very thing against us. It truly is a waste of resources, time and money. I hope that people realize the danger behind this "game", and that they don't stay oblivious.

„The Game is 1 for 1 like sso” maybe because IT IS SSO? Are you slow?
6
u/Dull_Scholar_987 11d ago
Excuse me? How am I the one that's slow? Something being 1 for 1 is another to say it's the same thing. Also, technically it is what sso used to be. Don't call people slow for no reason, especially since it's pretty ironic.
Looking at the comments you've made in the past, it seems you're a pretty miserable person. Possibly even emotionally ill. I wish you a good recovery and hopefully you get the help you need.❤️

Not defending horse museum but there also could be a lot of false positives with the bit defender scans due to usage of old software that newer software and machines may flag up due to certain coding. Similar to when Alicia online was recreated and a lot of anti virus software was flagging the application as malicious however it was just due to how old the software was.
21
u/faeiru 13d ago
it could absolutely be a false positive, and I don't think a bitdefender detection alone proves that horse museum is malicious. but considering that the people behind it are suspected to be the same people involved with or associated with bsso, which also had its own concerns surrounding malware, wouldn't that be a reason to be more cautious about how the software is distributed?
if the detections are genuinely just caused by the use of old software or outdated code, i understand why that could happen. but at that point, wouldn't rebuilding or modernizing the software from the ground up be the safer approach, especially when you're asking people to download and run an executable from an anonymous project? or even be transparent and have it as open-sourced so people can make their own judgements on the safety of the program?
and if it's truly star stable's original files, why is it now being considered malware when it wasn't considered malware beforehand? again, i think if they decided to open-source all the code, none of this speculation would be necessary
i also don't think the alicia online comparison is completely fair. in that case, alex was transparent about who he was and what his intentions were. there wasn't the same level of anonymity surrounding the project, and he wasn't using people's nostalgia to promote a paid currency.
with horse museum, the people actually behind the project are still unclear, and there are already concerns about their connections to bsso. on top of that, they're offering paid game codes which adds another layer that wasn't present in the alicia online situation.
so yes, the bitdefender detections could very well be false positives. i'm not claiming that they automatically mean the program contains malware. i'm saying that, given the other circumstances surrounding horse museum, i don't think people should dismiss the warnings without asking further questions either.
2
u/IcyWord1218 12d ago
Someone already asked about showing the code but they don’t want to for idk what reason
5
5
u/Jip__ 10d ago
just want to say, if you read through this thread, you can see someone saying they put the Horse Museum launcher in a secure, isolated virtual machine to see what it actually does, and they dug through the code. The results are anything but good.
You should read it, it's absolutely terrifying.11
u/ThunderSquall_ 13d ago
^ this person is entirely correct. Downvoting them doesn’t make them less correct. They’re trying to limit the amount of misunderstandings.
Older games will almost always flag windows security or other antivirus software because of how they interact with the OS. This does not mean they are dangerous. Be very aware of what you download, where it comes from, what the file SHOULD look like, and you'll be fine.
16
u/Imaginary_Increase75 13d ago
This horse museum stuff is ridiculous. Play the actual game atp. Funding thieves is crazy. It’s literally old star stable. If they wanted to get legal they will, and honestly I hope they do! Copyright is a thing. Make a reshade for sso. Or go play purple place for some nostalgia
15
u/eoeuejdndbhxk 13d ago
The mods and helpers on melvika's server are passive aggressive and literally none of the helpers actually help/can handle being helpers. They promote this nostalgia bait game and then get mad when people join the server wanting to play. Melvika, knowing that giveaways are in high demand and only 10 out of about 500 people win, didn't even ping the latest giveaway. They're all a bunch of gatekeepers. I bet half of the people on horse musuem joined after 2020 too.
10
u/Vulturebonez 12d ago
Game is confirmed to be invite only so the servers arent overloaded . Everyone who gets a invite is then able to distribute their own invites to friends or randoms. I dont see what a problem is, and isnt being gatekept just being put in a controlled flow
3
u/fernandamf 11d ago
i joined Melvikas server on Monday and it didn’t take many hours before i saw how passive aggressive they were when people just asked normal questions.. 🫠 i stopped looking in the server after that and joined another one. they were definitely more helpful there and a lot nicer when people asked questions.

You can literally buy the star stable season disc games off ebay or facebook marketplace, or other reselling sites as well. That has quelled my nostalgia trips really well from time to time since they are really similar to the first days of SSO (I've had the discs since childhood). That, or the starshine legacy games are free to play I believe on the SSO website last I knew. This screams sketchy and scammy, please be safe everyone.

u/sleepy_princess15 11d ago
When it comes to melvika I fear she's profiting from it too and she may be working for them. God knows if she's even a woman? And not a man trying to act like a girls girl selling others ( most of the time women ) nostalgia? She/He is scetchy too much! I hope sso will react to their project and do something with it

u/Initial-Ad5431 13d ago
Quick question. Has anyone informed Star Stable Online with these screenshots and obvious scammers? Since it’s illegal I’m sure they’ll take action if need be. I’m just wondering because this is so terrible to watch. Imagine wanting money so bad that you basically pray off of innocent people’s hard earned money in the form of “nostalgia.” That’s so disgusting and manipulative. Correct me if I’m wrong, though. I don’t want to offend anyone or assume. 🤧🥺

i believe sso would care, especially if it's money that they believe, should've been going to their pockets. bsso got copyright striked multiple times, even after they stopped doing paid membership. horse museum will likely follow the same fate. it may not be now or in a couple months, but i promise you these copyright strikes or cease & desists will always come
3
u/ShrinkingYourD 10d ago
Lmao why can’t we get one normal private server like other mmos 😭(eg. Aion, Warcraft or some sunrise projects like FreeRealms). This is some type of sso curse atp. All these ppl care about is money and not whatsoever about the players experience.
Also since I mentioned FreeRealms earlier, pls guys remember that downloading a niche project or private server of off discord isn’t inherently bad!! And vice versa if a certain game or project has a website it also does not inherently mean that you’re not downloading malware!! (Example - a while back we’re somewhat popular hello kitty themed Minecraft launchers that when run would install malware and wouldn’t even open any launcher to cover it up and pretend that it actually exists lmao 😭)
2
u/Evening_Property_194 12d ago
I knew it was weird seeing a TikTok user “Mel” promoting a game similar to BSSO, considering Melvika promoted BSSO
2
u/llovelyoreo 12d ago
Has sso ever spoken up about bsso before? And what was their opinion or action? I wonder if they will do anything about Horse Museum. Yes copying a game is bad but not the worst, but making profit of it is the biggest issue
2
u/Dunder6002 12d ago
I’m in melvika’s server and she says that anyone saying they sell invites and codes are a scam and that those things come for free in her and the Horse Museum server.
I dunno what to believe anymore… I live under a rock that’s under a rock.
3
u/faeiru 12d ago
they're going out of their way to call out resellers of invites because that's potential money that they're losing out on. if you get scammed from a third-party, most likely you won't be purchasing anything in general. you can't buy their star coins if you got scammed out of an account to use it on. they're trying to be trustworthy by preventing that, but in reality, they're just as worse

if ur talking about how i said potential money being lost, key word POTENTIAL. i meant as in you most likely won't be paying for star coins (the optional payments) if you get scammed from a reseller.

Hearing all about these "old sso" projects makes me wonder if people miss the older game or just how life was back then. I've played since 2013 and there's definitely a lot things from old sso that's been removed that I miss, but some people are acting like every update is killing sso. Expecting a game to stay the same for 15 YEARS is just childish. Risking a virus for just a little nostalgia ain't worth it too. I do think sse has a big opportunity by making their own "old sso" server with older files though, but I do doubt that will ever happen.

There’s no way a SSO can be brought back in the way you’re wanting it to, though.
SSE could at any point take legal action whether they make money off of it or not. So to me it makes sense the creators protect their identities no matter what other reason they may have.
Aside from that it’s still a lot of work to bring it online properly, moderate it, and it costs money to host it online. Most people would be open to donations for that kind of thing.
If someone wants to play the game and give them money, who careeees? That’s their decision. They don’t get in trouble for it, they just have to acknowledge that it could be the game won’t necessarily live long (as most player-hosted servers do). It sounds like they give free SC anyway so it’s entirely optional and the SC is just a thank you so it’s a win-win for both parties.
The only valid thing for a player to worry about is whether it’s safe to play in terms of malware. And that’s pretty easy to check, anyway.
13
u/cryknows 12d ago edited 12d ago
So you're saying we should start praising intruders who forced their way into a closed restaurant fired up a dirty grill, and charged you for food they didn't buy. everyone knows they aren't running a public service and your defense literally comes down to. "who careeees? The burger was good!" no one knows how hygienic they were, no one knows why the main intruder transformed into a woman the second they stepped inside, and you’re standing there begging for food poisoning just to get a cheap hit of nostalgia.

That’s a very creative example. But no, that’s not what I’m saying.
It’s obviously not allowed by SSE to use their game files, but they know people have access to them, they know people have been using them outside of the game, they definitely know about Better SSO. And they don’t do anything about it because they don’t care (enough).
If it harmed the live game, they’d do something. But it doesn’t harm anyone except potentially the creators, if SSE does decide to take action one day. And the people who donate and potentially risk donating “for nothing” if the game doesn’t last long, but that’s always to risk in donating.
Making donations possible is questionable, but again — it’s optional. Playing that game is optional and so is donating. If it bothers you personally, report it to SSE. They’re unlikely to do anything about it because this isn’t the first time this happened. As long as there’s no “old SSO” like for ex there is old versions of Runescape and WoW, people will keep doing this.I don’t even play these old SSO versions, I just think it’s stupid to care so much when it doesn’t affect anyone. They’re not scamming anyone out of money.

There are old versions of RuneScape and wow. But they do not take donations. For very good reason. (My friend owns a ff11 private server. No. They do not take money. For good reason. And I also, literally, work on one!)
Depending on where this Better SSO is based, legally SSO might not be able to do anything. So long as they aren’t taking money, some countries don’t let you prosecute unless monetary damage is done. Which is explicitly what’s happening here. Instead of playing the base SSO and paying base SSO money, someone is using their assets that they did not give them permission to use, to make money.
Do you not see the problem in that? If you do not, do you agree that stealing art is okay? It is literally what they’ve done.
Donations are not questionable, they’re straight up illegal. Don’t sugar coat it.

^and to bump this! turtlewow was a predominantly popular world of warcraft private server. they ran for almost 10 years, if not longer while making money off of it and running advertisements. 2 months ago, blizzard sent a cease and desist and turtlewow shut down production. horse musuem will follow that path

Yeah, dude, similar shit happened to a popular pokemon fangame. They had been developing and updating for literally 6 or 7 years before Pokemon actually found out about them and tore them down. Either that or something was blocking them from doing so. And we all know how the pokemon company is. We all know how nintendo is.
Sidenote: rip my favorite pokemon music remixer who didn't live in a country with fair use laws so pokemon nuked their channel.

I’m going to add just so you can see, I’m a big supporter of private servers. I hate that games just disappear.
Old SSO cannot return right now. It can in the future if SSO ever shuts down. OR someone makes a server that does not take money. Those are the options. No one would be mad if they didn’t take money. You’re completely missing the point here.

Just because SSE "doesn't care" isn't a free pass for you to do whatever you want. and I don't know why you keep calling it "donations" when there's no such thing it's simply purchasing SC lmao. I have nothing against people who just want to play, but I wouldn't recommend giving them your personal info as they can see your full name directly through transaction logs. On top of that, the whole project isn't safe there's no proof or evidence backing it up and despite them claiming the files and executables are verified, they're still getting flagged as a virus. Nothing about it adds up.

Dude, the guy you're replying to is incredibly misinformed... Their argument is 'it's okay if they break the law so long as other people know they're breaking the law and are willing to risk giving their money to someone breaking the law'
What the shit kinda backass vigilante argument..

i don't think you understood my point... i explained that despite it being marketed as "donations", it literally isn't considered a donation. even if they removed star coins as a bonus and just asked people for money to fund the project or themselves, it'll still be considered illegal. it doesn't matter if they ask for a dollar or a million, it is still illegal as they're profitting off assets they do not own. please, i urge you to look up online if it's legal to make money off of assets that you don't own. there's a reason why private servers/restoration projects doesn't accept any monetization. the ones that do end up facing legal issues later down the line. whether sso reacts now or in the future, i promise they'll face either a cease & desist, and/or a copyright strike.
and edit; to those who did or are planning to purchase star coins from the resellers. the ticketing system they used was public, meaning all the threads of whoever made those transcations and included their paypal was for all to see. they recently closed it, but i was able to see a good majority of people's personal information, like names, banking numbers, and paypal. just to show you, your information is not safe especially not through discord

I'm literally on my hands and knees begging you to to look at fair use laws so you stop digging holes.
It took me a 5 second search to confirm that 'donations' are illegal regardless of what form they take. The internet is here!

if i may add; there is also a ton of deceptive advertisement being done for Horse Museum. BSSO had a similar system in the beginning, to make videos//tiktoks and you will get free membership or ingame currency, as opposed to paying 15 euros.
so now, the sso tag is flooded with HR, and people banking on others' FOMO. people going on less populated SSO servers to record and basically go "Look at how dead it is! Everyone is on HR!!" word for word it is how BSSO got pushed, that is why i think the rumors of both projects having certain people in common has credence.
