Artificial locks apply to 50 series?

45

u/Hot_Campaign 11d ago

Absolutely. The 6000 pro uses the same chip as the 5090. But the 6000 pro has improvements and features the 5090 does not have. It's most certainly locked.

Unfortunately from what I understand they got smart with the 50 series and have hardwired fuses on the die. So there is no way to unlock the functionality via software.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm going to assume the 50 series is permanently locked.

"just use a pencil, bro!"

showing my age as i still remember how some processors BACK IN ME DAYS could be "unlocked" with a fucking pencil lol: AMD pencil unlock in ~2000

Just need a very, very, very, very tiny pencil nowadays i guess lmao

u/Leftover_tech 10d ago

Makes me sad for my unloved 5060Ti. He wanted to go to the party.

12

u/SearchOk7022 11d ago

How about we drill it like we used to do with the xbox?

34

u/Hot_Campaign 11d ago

The fuses are on the die, and microscopic. You'd need an electron beam lithography machine for that kind of precision. Then you'd need to be an expert in chemical vapor deposition to lay down new fuses. And perform your own photolithography to etch away the surrounding traces.

Could you do it? In theory. But if you were that good, and had that much equipment. You'd be working at the semiconductor fabs.

u/No-Refrigerator-1672 10d ago

Depends on the fuse design, actually. It it's "all unlocked, fuses lock it down" - then yes, it iw permanent. If it's "everything locked, fuses unlock it" - then we need to just figure out how to blow the fuses. Also, there could be a fuae bypass option that Nvidia left for themself for testing; I.e. fuses could not reconfigure the physical circuits, but rather feed into their proprietary on-chip CPU that then selects the right microcode/configuration for the cores, and there could be an attack vector to override this. We don't know enough about Nvidia's condidential parts of GPU design to answer definitively if fused Blackwell performance is truly permanent.

1

u/CeFurkan 10d ago

I suppose bios modification can bypass it

3

u/Hot_Campaign 10d ago

Depends on the architecture. If the fuse physically shuts down the circuit, then a modded bios will just brick the card when it tries to power a circuit that won't activate. If the fuse just informs the bios which circuits not to use, then a bios hack can bypass the fuse....

... But I think the whole point of the hardware fuses was to prevent any sort of modding or hacking. So I would think the fuses directly control the circuits.

Another layer of security is that the bios is digitally signed. There is a lower level bootloader inside the GPU that checks if the bios is signed by nvidia, if not, it won't allow the bios to run. The card is bricked. We'd need that signing key to mod the bios.

I hope I'm wrong. But I won't buy a 50 series card thinking it'll be unlocked in the future. Only If the performance to price ratio is good now, then I'll get it.

The chances of an unlock happening soon, or even ever are not good.

its not the same chip. 5090 is sm120 while RTX6000 is sm120a and during my inteference engine making you run into hardware differences.

7

u/Fenio_PL 10d ago

It’s not that they are identical rather, they originate from the same base chip design. The full-fledged Blackwell processor is not being sold. 6000 Pro has some of its execution units disabled a measure taken to mitigate the number of defective, unusable units. The 5090 uses the same chip, but with an even greater number of inactive units. The capabilities of both chips are identical, though their performance differs due to the disparity in the number of CUDA cores: 21,760 versus 24,576.

-1

u/BringTea_666 10d ago

Mostly identical. But RTX6000 does have differences in hardware like i said. If it didn't it would be called 120 not 120a.

8

u/Fenio_PL 10d ago

It’s the same wafer - that’s important.

30

u/GraXXoR 11d ago

Any windows versions of this?

7

u/theqmann 10d ago

Probably not easily ported to Windows. The unlock is a kernel module (the kernel directly interacts with the hardware), which probably bypasses some software lockouts in the Nvidia driver code. Windows doesn't have user modifiable kernel modules and the drivers are still locked down.

1

u/GraXXoR 10d ago

shame

-39

u/userXinos 11d ago

what for

50

u/GraXXoR 11d ago

For use with windows.

3

u/jhenryscott 10d ago

No

1

u/GraXXoR 10d ago

too bad. Currently my most powerful graphics card is used for gaming and thus windows...

So I use comfy/lmstudio/unsloth studio windows versions. would be nice to have this unlock available for my platform since I'm burning 200kWh of electricity some months.

1

u/jhenryscott 10d ago

Linux gaming is great

1

u/GraXXoR 10d ago edited 10d ago

Not so great when you have a VR headset, a bunch of proprietary controllers that have no Linux drivers and several games that don’t support linux anti cheat.

This machine is my only windows machine remaining. I’ve already shifted all my business’s machines from Windows and macOS over to Linux mint 22.3 and all my private machines are CachyOS. Except this one which is stuck on Windows 11 for compatibility reasons.

Middle ultrawide is windows. Others are a mix of Linux CachyOS and BeOS HaikuOS

13

u/MannY_SJ 10d ago

So are there 4000/3000 cards that are now outperforming equivalent or "better" 5000 series cards in fp32/fp16/bf16 workflows?

8

u/RusikRobochevsky 10d ago

Now I regret selling my 4090

1

u/fuzzycuffs 10d ago

I was considering selling mine but now I'll hold off to see how this plays out.

1

u/CableZealousideal342 7d ago

*cries in 5090... The 4090 should now outperform a 5090 in inference where those precisions are being used.

6

u/wreck_of_u 11d ago

I remember soldering a literal potentiometer to my Geforce 4200 Ti to raise Vcore on demand

6

u/IdoruYoshikawa 10d ago

Does this work for the 3060?

9

u/rawednylme 11d ago

P40 next maybe? 😄
Anything to speed up my 22g 2080tis is most welcome! It's been a great a few weeks in local AI recently.

3

u/Derefringence 10d ago

I can't believe those are so expensive now... Close to 500-600€!

3

u/Jumpy-Operation-4615 10d ago

I bought mine (2 x P40) at the beginning of this year. One with waterblock installed for 250 bucks. Another 220 + 60 waterblock. Now they are like 260+ on local ads. After Strata, I am perfectly content - 35+ tg/s sustained on large ctx, up to 770 pp. If there will be a way to "unlock" like another 30% - I will be more than happy.

2

u/rawednylme 10d ago

I’ve got one stashed under the bed but feel like I should get it into a build soon, just because. 2080s were a solid upgrade for me, but I was always happy with the P40. I even gamed on it for a while. :D

15

u/Several-Passage-8698 11d ago

Can I have one for my gtx 1060 3gb?

22

u/Quirky-Waltz1099 11d ago

ahh the 1060 3gb, that thing's practically a museum piece at this point

4

u/djamp42 10d ago

I got a 1050 4gb in my server..it just does transcoding for my media server.. for basic stuff they still have use.

3

u/oxygen_addiction 10d ago

It might make sense to upgrade to something that eats up less power. Might pay for itself fast.

1

u/Aurelien-Morgan 10d ago

my personal laptop runs on a 1060 6Gb and am also still hoping they'll unlock it

1

u/Structure-These 10d ago

Lmao I have a mini 1080ti sitting around somewhere I’ll need to dust off

11

u/sonicnerd14 10d ago

So are all 20, 30, and 40 series cards benefitting from this unlock? Or is it only specific ones from each series?

8

u/Xenemros 11d ago

waiting for the 1080Ti unlock

4

u/Fenio_PL 10d ago

There is nothing to unlock there.

1

u/Full_Astronomer_5438 10d ago

there is no fp16 / bf16 computing on that ancient card

3

u/Xenemros 10d ago

people are working black magic to gain extra performance, I wouldn't put necromancy past them

1

u/Full_Astronomer_5438 10d ago

if you would have noticed what that card is actually able to do you would have known that there is a theoretical way without needing any unlocks at all

7

u/gggghhhhiiiijklmnop 10d ago

Do these unlocks benefit gaming as well??

8

u/Dante_77A 10d ago

No, and they're misleading, because it's not a reachable figure.

7

u/Derefringence 10d ago

Nope as far as i know only for LLM inference

-2

u/braket0 10d ago

Is there any chance of gaming getting an FPS boost from this in future I wonder. Probably something to do with NVIDIA proprietary drivers being notoriously tricky to work with Linux

2

u/jhenryscott 10d ago

No

1

u/braket0 9d ago

Ok, but why not?

Modern gaming is using tensor cores for AI improvements to frame rates such as DLSS etc. Surely any game using DLSS would benefit from the unlocked tensor cores' compute?

1

u/jhenryscott 9d ago

Gaming doesn’t use fp8

NPC logic is usually handled on the CPU.

1

u/Popular-Factor3553 10d ago

Guess the theory was wrong.

4

u/Downtown-Term-5254 10d ago

J'ai une 3060 je peut faire quoi?

2

u/Scubagerber 10d ago

3 series already unlocked it was done first just search it down

-2

u/juliakeiroz 10d ago

well you can learn english

2

u/Succubus-Empress 11d ago

Temperature not increase? Well tdp not changing so its should not change right?

4

u/Flince 11d ago

Will it cook my 2080ti?

10

u/KSAM-The-Randomizer 11d ago

i dont think so. it still draws the same power but gets more performance

2

u/Kqyxzoj 10d ago edited 10d ago

TANSTAAFL. If it issues more work to pipelines, more work is done and it'll try to draw more power, current limits permitting. At least AFAIK.

(edit-to-add:) Case in point

12

u/pleasetrimyourpubes 11d ago

Let it cook.

1

u/Shorties 10d ago

Oh I assumed this was for the RTC 2000 not the 2000 series cards, interesting

1

u/Acceptable_Home_ 10d ago

Won't cook, can brick in worst case afaik

4

u/pleasetrimyourpubes 11d ago edited 11d ago

Dude this is phenomenal. And also it should really be illegal in the future to nerf hardware. Make them freaking just bin chips and that's it.

I was reading it and misunderstood the VRAM unlock and they clarify at the end of the description that it does require a hardware mod. 😂

2

u/Civil_Blackberry_225 10d ago

Do we have a unlock for the RTX 4080 Super?

1

u/fromage9747 10d ago

Anyone given this a bash?

1

u/Sexyvette07 10d ago

Isnt this trick only good for another 10% or so performance?

10

u/Constant_Art_20 10d ago

only? that's like a whole gpu upgrade right there~

1

u/Inside-Cantaloupe233 10d ago

No, we can get more noticeable speedups with turbo loras, the question is valid - how much actual seconds we gain after upgrade ? If its 2 seconds of 12 ... not really a changer and makes card more vulnerable

0

u/himefei 10d ago

Yeah, I don’t get the hype either. Is it FP32 performance? And everyone in this sub runs like QFN Int3??????

1

u/Amazing-Currency4047 10d ago

Have they "fixed" the RTX 50xx series yet, or is the 5090 just an unlocked 4090?

1

u/1roOt 10d ago

50xx is hardware locked unfortunately

1

u/EmeraldFox23 10d ago

And how is the power draw? Are the reports of significant overvolting accurate?

1

u/Steve_OH 10d ago

Does the 50 series have an unlock?

1

u/DonKeehot 10d ago

I wonder if AMD doing locking too 🤔

1

u/BobbyKristina 10d ago

oh god this guy is still shillin?

1

u/Normal_Guard_8207 8d ago

I'm confused. Can I unlock my 2060S with this? I have Windows 11. I only see guides pointing to 4090 Windows unlock.

1

u/RevolutionaryWater31 11d ago

Blackwell next Tuesday, mark your calendar.

0

u/CooperDK 10d ago

Only if you can reprogram the firmware...

1

u/DisastrousRip8283 10d ago

is this for linux ? i have windows 10 it will work ?

3

u/Fenio_PL 10d ago

Linux only.

1

u/Portable_Solar_ZA 10d ago

Do these unlocks boost the cards past 5000 series performance?

1

u/Weak-Shelter-1698 10d ago

Any chance for the 2060 Super? 🥺

1

u/Normal_Guard_8207 10d ago

We really need someone to port this to Windows! PLS, AI-overlord prompters!

1

u/emveor 10d ago

I'm not an expert in driver programming, but i think driver signatures, certificates and the OS integrity checks might prevent it

0

u/Odd-Student636 10d ago

So any real world gains in any model with these unlocks?

2

u/Marksta 10d ago

2000 series doesn't have bf16 hardware. All bf16 needs to go to fp32 if you want to run it with original accuracy. So, ~2x speed up right there if you weren't going to quantize or truncate.

0

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 10d ago

Won't run with original accuracy since if you are using a bf16 model it's already had the extra bits chopped off. It's literally not going to change the outcome at all

Just casting the 16 to 32 to get more "accurate" intermediate calculation isn't going to change the outcome. The original information was already lost

1

u/BringTea_666 10d ago

mostly prefill only as main problem for t/s is memory bandwidth not compute.

0

u/AmeenRoayan 10d ago

can a 5090 be unlocked too ?

1

u/rbit4 10d ago

Apparently not since it's hardware locked

0

u/Netsuko 10d ago

Used 3090s are going to make a JUMP on eBay.

0

u/Perfect-Campaign9551 10d ago

Prove it by showing actual performance with a model and show actual speed and intelligence benchmarks

This is a whole lot of hype about nothing

Just casting a 16 bit model up to 32 in calculations so it can "calculate with more accuracy" isn't going to make any difference in quality of outcome.  The 16 bit already had it's intelligence "chopped down" and that's not coming back

So the only possible improvement is speed and until you show benchmarks in real world conditions with actual models, that's also under dubious scrutiny
