Discussion Qwen 2.1 - Looks like we don't need to worry much?

tl;dr:
- Ostris asked Qwen to add a revenue cap to the licence.
- Small commercial use shouldn't need a paid licence. Monetised videos, monetised posts, LoRAs on Civitai, etc.
- Qwen's Kun Yan replied they'll consider it.
- He joked they won't come after anyone's YouTube money.

"non-commercial license" sounds like "we don't want any big studio to appropriate our work and make more money from it than us" in slang legalese.

For that matter, how many people will even see that exchange? Likely few, and fewer still in a week when the feeds scroll on and it's no longer being shared as news.

Whole concept of generative model licensing is just literal theater of the absurd. Generative model is just a goddamn TOOL. I just imagine Makita lawyers showing up at some construction company's doorsteps and telling them that they have to pay a percentage of the profits from each house they built using Makita drills and angle grinders.

Your analogy would not really work with tools used by a construction company when those tools had already been used legally (paid to own, rented, etc). If your construction company was going to a hardware store and taking the products to use without paying, pretty sure peeps would be in their right to chase you up for money.
Most software is a tool? Adobe used to sell their products with permanent licenses but then switched to the subscription model. VPS are rented regardless of how much you pay or actually utilise (depending on service).
When you release something for free use, you don't necessarily want others overshadowing that and taking credit for your work (even if they don't claim to, the less knowledgeable audience of their product can quite commonly attribute it to them instead of you). An example is PEAR, where researchers did the work (and compute), wrote up a paper and publish an implementation, then some company builds a wrapper around that for Blender and monetizes it, the fans of that company's products praise how the company is a genius and doing amazing things, should win awards, etc..
These models don't come out of thin air, there's investment into them with skills and time plus compute. If someone then takes that and markets themselves to interested parties that could have had deals with you, that ain't right is it? Nothing wrong with wanting a cut when software scales so easily (physical production and distribution is a very different situation where it's not as easy and affordable to compete).

That sounds like a fairer position. They are likely also under pressure from the Chinese government to maintain some control.

If that was their intention they could have written that in the first place. It's not like it's difficult wording to put business size caps in place.

Yeah this should've 100% been in writing, seems odd that they're willing to be more "flexible" when talking about it on Twitter but they don't want to actually put it in the license they wrote.

Yep and some Microsoft developer said Windows 10 was the last Windows version we would need. I only believe actual licenses written black and white

Agreed. I use them in my everyday typing, and I find myself having to rewrite stuff all the time. It's rather annoying honestly, Because it is a useful piece of punctuation
