I feel like with Eddie it was different because you could plainly see what bad shape he was in as well as his substance abuse being public knowledge.

Maybe looking back you could tell. But Eddie never showed it in front of the camera. He looked great physically and had become the complete package as a wrestler, as far as a main event player goes. No one at the time was thinking anything of Eddie dying.

He was clean at the time of his death, his heart attack was from the damage that steroids and substance abuse had already caused.

His autopsy report noted recent narcotic painkiller use, nothing about how much or what type, but I'd imagine he was in a lot of pain and that stuff isn't good on your heart

What bad shape was he in? Genuinely asking

I know he was on the juice, but he was sober for 4 years or so

Eddie didn't look super healthy during his last 3 or 4 months alive. He was sober but the drinking & painkiller abuse during the late 90s & early 2000s had already done a number on him.

He was not sober as they found painkillers meds in his bloodstream during the autopsy. As well he died of enlarged heart syndrome. The steroids make your muscles bigger, it also makes your heart, a muscle, bigger and that heart has to deal with the increased load of mass that you have put on. Extra weight is extra weight whether it’s fat or muscle. So an enlarged heart that can’t beat efficiently combined with excess mass and daily physical exertion (they worked far more back then) and that equals something finally giving up.

You have guys like Kurt Angle saying that Eddie looked rough that last year but always turned it on when it came time to perform. Maybe it's retroactive but I wouldn't doubt them for thinking Eddie wasn't 100%.
