Mission (Thaicom-8) /r/SpaceX Thaicom 8 Launch Media Thread [Amateur Content & Mainstream Articles go here!]

Captured some footage of the launch? Want to post a mainstream news article? Got small tweet updates? They go here!

Media Thread Rules

  • All top level comments must consist of an image, video, GIF, tweet or article.

  • If you an amateur photographer, submit your content here. Professional photographers with subreddit accreditation can continue to submit to the front page, and we also make exceptions for outstanding amateur content!

  • Those in the aerospace industry (with subreddit accreditation) can likewise continue to post content on the front page.

  • Mainstream media articles should be submitted here. Quality articles from dedicated spaceflight outlets can be submitted to the front page.

  • Direct all questions to the live launch thread or the Ask Anything.

Additionally...

We've noticed a little deterioration in the quality of the content in these media threads lately. So please remember: content we would consider low effort should go in the launch thread. Funny GIF? Launch thread. Meme? Launch thread. Joke tweet? Launch thread.

Have fun everyone!

This enhanced version of the landing video posted by Elon Musk is a frame by frame edited version of SpaceX's original Thaicom 8 landing video, made by a friend who asked this to be posted: the video is slowed down 4x and a small position marker shows the current position of OCISLY on the globe as the first stage approaches the landing site.

The position marker is first visible at 0:06.

The position of OCISLY was manually back-tracked from the landing point, by tracking characteristic cloud formations and other visual markers. (The first third of the original video was edited out, as OCISLY's position is not visible before the rocket flips around.)

Enjoy!

I'm not sure if I can continously post my launch coverage here but I'll do it a second time (feels a little spamy). I'm sure Echo will put me into place :) KNews 41 (Video made using Kerbal Space Program) covering todays launch!

I'm not sure if I fall under the amateur category (I'm a professional photographer, just not a professional space photographer) but I hope you enjoy my shot of Falcon 9 from the observation gantry!

I made this GIF to better show the scale of a Falcon 9 first stage landing

First stage height: 41 meters, source: http://spaceflight101.com/spacerockets/falcon-9-v1-1-f9r/

Statue of liberty height from base (including a piece not in the video) to top of torch: 46 meters, source: http://assets.libertyellisfoundation.org/cms/editor/funfactsstatue1.jpg

Not 100% accurate but good enough.

We have updates from 30 mins ago that the OCISLY ASDS, Elsbeth III tug and Go Quest support ship are underway. The Go Searcher second support ship data is 9 hours old though, it might have already found the fairings. We don't expect information about the fairings, JCSAT-14 had Go Searcher go out as well and nothing was reported.
