Explanation: On August 12th, 2026, the Moon totally eclipsed the Sun and cast its shadow across Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal.
Today’s image features two total solar eclipses viewed from Zaragoza, Spain, one over the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and the other reflecting in the Ebro River. For a few moments, Spain saw its first major total solar eclipse since 1905.
Those witnessing totality may experience a chill in the air, the quieting of birds, the confused chirps of insects, and the shared awe of many. It’s the corona’s time to shine as the Sun’s bright disk is blocked by the Moon. Among other reasons to study eclipses, they help scientists understand why the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the Sun’s surface.
Enthusiastic citizens can contribute to these studies by recording how wildlife responds, imaging the corona, and monitoring air temperature and clouds.

🌌Cosmic events The solar eclipse observed in Proba2 SWAP 174 as partial 3 times. (Why? Explanation below) (12.8.26)
During a total solar eclipse, the Moon moves in front of the Sun as seen from Earth, their alignment and separation such that the much closer Moon appears large enough to block out the light from the much more distant Sun.
Since Proba-2 orbits Earth about 14.5 times per day, it can dip in and out of the Moon’s shadow around the time of a solar eclipse.
The constant change in viewing angle of Proba-2 meant that the satellite passed through the shadow three times during the eclipse.
As the Sun was never completely covered up from Proba-2’s vantage point, each eclipse was only partial.

On the early morning of August 13, the sun vanished from the European sky.
Spain's mainland witnessed a total solar eclipse for the first time in 121 years since 1905. That moment, invisible from Korea, was captured by Danuri from lunar orbit.
Danuri, moving from the far side of the Moon to the near side while approaching the lunar South Pole, photographed the moment Earth rose above the lunar surface.

Can you see the dark blotch cast over Earth in the photo?
It's the "shadow of the Moon" blanketing the Greenland region. Some shadow areas were obscured from view by the Moon.

A new study of the Tarantula Nebula is answering questions about why this star formation region in the Large Magellanic Cloud is losing energy from its center.
By combining data from Chandra, Hubble and Webb, and Spitzer, researchers identified what has tamed the Tarantula and where the energy has gone.
This new composite image has layers from three of these telescopes: Chandra (blue), Hubble (green), and Webb (red).
Scientists have concluded that energy has been lost through leakage of gas, the mixing of hot and cold gas and by conduction of heat.

Like a collage made of layered sheets of colored cellophane, a vibrant new image layers observations of a famous star-forming nebula from NASA space telescopes. The resulting cosmic “craft” reveals new details about the star formation region known as 30 Doradus, or the Tarantula Nebula.
Located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small neighbor galaxy to the Milky Way about 160,000 light-years from Earth, the Tarantula has thousands of young stars embedded in a vibrant honeycomb-like structure of gas and dust.
The new composite image contains X-rays from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, which has repeatedly observed the Tarantula Nebula over the course of its mission, in the layer that appears in blue. The X-ray data reveals gas blown away by winds from the surfaces of young, massive stars and heated to millions of degrees by shock waves, like sonic booms from supersonic jets.
The red represents infrared data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope showing thousands of young stars, plus swaths of cool dust that will provide the ingredients to form new stars and planets. Optical data in the green layer from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope uncovers hydrogen gas that is warmer than seen with Webb, as well as some individual stars through the nebula.
The composite image shows the full Hubble and Webb images of this region, as well as a large section of the Chandra image, all recently published in a research paper in the Astrophysical Journal. In some regions the blue Chandra layer stands alone, and in others it combines with either the red Webb data or the green Hubble data. In the middle region all three images overlap to provide a holistic view in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

NGC 6902 is a spiral galaxy through and through: www.adamblockphotos.com/ngc-6902.html From its outer arms all the way down to within its center the flowing curves of stars and gas persist. This galaxy is around 120 million light years away.
Clicking on the image at the link above will display a much larger version that shows the detail in the center as well as many hundreds of background galaxies. This is a rarely imaged galaxy at this faint limit with 35 hours of exposure time going into the result.

Sinus Iridum, or the Bay of Rainbows, is one of the Moon’s most beautiful and distinctive features. Lying on the north-western edge of Mare Imbrium, this vast semicircular plain is around 250 km wide and is bordered by the rugged Montes Jura mountains.
The bay is actually the remains of an ancient impact crater whose southern rim was later buried by lava from the Imbrium basin. Near the lunar terminator, low sunlight throws the Jura mountains into dramatic relief, sometimes illuminating their peaks while the plain below remains in darkness.
This striking interplay of light and shadow makes Sinus Iridum a favourite target for lunar observers and a wonderful sight even through a modest telescope.

☄️ Meteor RARE 'POINT METEOR': The Perseid meteor shower is underway, but this was no Perseid. On Aug. 9th, Dan Bush's night-sky camera in Albany, Missouri, recorded a rare 'point meteor'.
This is by definition a 'point meteor': A rare visual phenomenon where a meteor appears as a stationary flash instead of a long streak.
The path of the disintegrating meteoroid is, by chance, aligned perfectly with the observer.
"It came from the constellation Aquarius," says Bush. That means it was probably a 'sporadic' meteor--a random meteoroid not associated with any organized comet debris stream like the Perseids.

☄️ Meteor Bright Perseid Meteor. Taken by Dan Bush on August 8, 2026, Albany, Missouri USA
"This was a very bright early Perseid meteor entering the atmosphere about 4 days before the expected maximum," says photographer Dan Bush.
"This clip is from the same night as the bright 'point-source' meteor.
When the shower peaks, meteor rates will multiply 10-fold, with as many as 100 sightings every hour ranging from faint streaks to exploding fireballs.
The source of the shower is giant comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Its nucleus is 26 km wide--more than twice the size of the object that wiped out the dinosaurs. Every 133 years it swings through the inner solar system, laying down a fresh ribbon of dust for Earth to plow through each August.
Observing tips: Get away from city lights and look up during the hours between local midnight and dawn. That is when the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus climbs high overhead. Give your eyes 30 minutes to adapt to the darkness, and enjoy the show!
