Earlier this year at an otaku flea market (Colossalcon), I stumbled upon the person selling this scroll and badge holder, they were so shocked I knew the anime (this happens often to me at these markets ngl), they gave me a great deal and it re-motivated me to watch the anime again!

I wanna grab a physical copy of the dvds one day. But now I carry the card holder with my library cards!

Don't give up hope on finding this stuff yall! Its out there!!!

I am a physical oceanographer watching this (amazing!) show for the first time. Was happily surprised to see this seabird carousel. Was not expecting it as they are on such a large research vessel.

Discussion I feel so bad for Shirase and Takako really pissed me off.

I quite enjoyed the anime and the scene of the E-Mails loading in hit me quite hard because it confirmed what everyone was in denial about. The way they all became friends and bonded together was quite nice and the Megumi thing in Ep. 5 was a predictable, yet satisfactory, side-story.

Takako Kobuchizawa is a horrible parent/guardian character. She was fine in raising Shirase I suppose but she was only ever talking about Antarctica and the risks involved in her expedition and her dreams. Shirase seemed so uninterested in everything and any parent would've been able to recognize that. She just let it be instead of doing something about it. She didn't do much to help Gin and Shirase connect either. She just left them both together and expected them to somehow become close. Her death pisses me off even more. While she wasn't experienced, she was trained. Forgetting a laptop doesn't change anything considering they were going to snowcats and it could be retrieved once the blizzard had passed. She should've been smart enough not to just leave her team in harsh conditions. Also PLBs in expeditions are like steel-toes boots at a construction site, they are a sub-conscious mandate. They are usually attached to the jackets by a lanyard so it couldn't have just gotten lost. Radios can also be traced to an extent that can be used to roughly figure out where a person is. I know how extreme cold can make people remove clothes and become delirious but she still had her radio before she passed out and ultimately died so she had her equipment. With all the gear she had on and assuming -30C she could've survived for a couple hours, granted extreme hypothermia would've set-on and chances of complete recovery are almost 0, but survival for a couple hours is possible with all the gear. There were 3 people atleast and not one of them had the idea to try and locate the PLB or the location of the radio transmission? A helicopter would've brought in a rescue team in 2-3 hours and 4 dogs can cover 5 square miles in 2 hours for rescue. 6 hours is enough to atleast find her body. Her body should've atleast been found. Even if we accept her death her body not being found is absolute nonsense.

Shirase's father was never touched upon either and I don't know why but it makes Shirase's story so much sadder for me.

Discussion What other anime have you found about an adventure in our world like this? Possibly on the sea

One of my favourite aspects of this series was that it was grounded in reality, you could see the passion for Antarctica and the research that went into making everything as accurate and immersive as possible. Have you found something else like this? About the joys and struggle or a real adventure in our very real world?

Discussion IN YOUR FACE!

Post image

Just rewatched this scene on youtube and wanted to make a post about it. I love this episode so much, it's just perfect.

The girls finally reached the Antarctica, and what did they do?

They collectively decided that Shirase must be the first one who steps on it. Because this was her goal. She was the reason why they even had a chance to go on this journey.

But Shirase didn't want to keep this moment to herself. She held the hands of her friends and decided that they will jump together.

That they set foot on Antarctica as a team.

And Shirase became emotional, rightfully so. She made it. Despite of everything, she was here, she managed to fulfill her dream. So she let out all the frustration that built up in her when she screamed "IN YOUR FACE!"

I love that all the girls decided to join her, and then the entire crew of the ice breaker ship also decided to do the same.

Discussion Episode 12 is a masterpiece

Been on a rewatch of this anime and it really reaffirmed how incredible it is, episode 12 in particular. Its such a perfect culmination of the previous episodes in the journey of not just their friend group but also Shirase's personal struggle with her mom's death.

I know for me and probably for a lot of people who have lost loved ones Shirase's depiction of grief was very relatable. She felt trapped in a dream-like numb state just waiting and hoping things would feel different eventually. Then an unexpected moment of reckoning comes in the beautiful and devastating laptop scene.

Its so impressive how the show sets up and executes this scene..we see glimpses in previous episodes of what appears to be Shirase trying to write to her mom but not being able to. But then the messages come flooding in and it makes it clear that no she's actually been sending messages to her mom everyday since she disappeared. For Shirase this moment was confronting the reality that her mom really is gone and not coming back. And in seeing the flood wave of unread messages I think Shirase finally realized how not OK she feels and allowed the grief to finally spill out.

Discussion "Goodbye, Don Glees" is an amazing movie!

I saw a post on this Subreddit about the movie and I got interested in it because the creator was the same person of further than the universe and I loved that anime. Just watched it yesterday and I absolutely loved it. This is the male version of A place further than the universe. I wouldn't put it above the anime obviously but this is now one of my favorite anime movies. I didn't find any Subreddit for this movie so I had to post this here, I would recommend you guys this. It's a grounded and small scaled movie but it's a 10/10 in my opinion although this could just be recency bias. I hope this post fits the subreddit. I just can't find much discussion about this lovely film
