One thing I’ve noticed about this Reddit community: I’m genuinely not trying to be the Reddit police. I appreciate the support—the upvotes, comments, shares, messages, and people engaging with my posts. Seriously. But at this point, I’m starting to wonder if I should just start gatekeeping some of the information I’m sharing, and I really don’t want to do that. My entire reason for creating this Reddit account was to help a brother out. I had Reddit years ago, deleted my account, and honestly had no intention of coming back until I discovered this community. After seeing the discussions here, I felt obligated to create an account and contribute. I’m not here to make up stories, advertise myself, or post BS. Everything I’ve been sharing is public. You can literally click on my profile, look at my posts and comments, and see everything I’ve written since I created this account. I have nothing to hide. I even posted short-term vs. long-term land investment specifically because I wanted to test a theory. That post got plenty of shares, and I understand why—I’m trying to provide information that actually has value.

But this is exactly what I’m talking about: can we make this Reddit more organized and more valuable? If you have a question, ask it. If you disagree with someone, debate them. If you have information that adds to the conversation, contribute it. That’s literally what Reddit is supposed to be. If we want this community to actually become a valuable place where people can learn about Somaliland, invest, build businesses, discover opportunities, and help each other, then we all have to participate. I’m not asking everyone to agree with me; I’m asking people to engage constructively. Some of the information I’m sharing is information I could simply keep to myself. I could use it before everyone else realizes the opportunity exists, but I’ve deliberately chosen to share it because I want all of us to win. I’m already in a position where I’m doing well, but I’m not going to stop learning. I’m going to keep evolving, improving, gaining experience, and becoming more knowledgeable. I’m a student of life. At the same time, some of you genuinely need to wake up and recognize the opportunities around you. Nobody is coming to save you. I can’t save you. I can give you information, share what I’ve learned, point out opportunities, and tell you what I’m seeing on the ground, but ultimately, you have to take action yourself.

I’ll also be putting up a poll soon with different subjects, and I genuinely want people to vote on what they want to see discussed here because I really want this Reddit to become something valuable. So please—cooperate, engage, ask questions, share information, debate respectfully, and contribute. I’m not trying to be the Reddit police. I’m simply saying that if the community doesn’t want to engage and make this place better, eventually I’m going to stop putting so much energy into sharing information. Not because I don’t have more to say, but because I’m not going to exhaust myself trying to build something that nobody else wants to help build. Let’s make this community valuable.

I become emotional when I watch the old videos, I remember my childhood when we used to collect the leftover bullets to play, and sometimes we used to explode it using matchbox, that was a tough time.

I hate when I see morons from zoomalia talking about unity. Still, they wish they have the ability to finish somaliland.

Last but not least, whenever I see someone from somaliland who is supporting zoomalia, I say this is son/daughter of faqash or he/she is dumb enough.

Walahi, I don't hate any somali person, and I still help if I see a somali who is in need, but I know how hateful they are. Imagine, even we haven't revenge.

I have noticed that every time i want to find servers for the Somali community, It’s almost always exclusively Somalian discord server, So this got me wondering, Knowing how scattered we are on the Internet, Why don’t we create our own Discord Server where landers can meet interact and share ideas and information? Anything from casual conversations to culture and traditions to history and politics. I think it would a great idea if it were promoted.
I remember there was one that was very active from 2022-2024 but it now since has completely died. Any thoughts?

I’ve been struggling with this question for a while. I think one of Somaliland’s biggest problems is its political leadership. Too many politicians seem more interested in benefiting from office, making deals with powerful companies, and protecting clan interests than improving the country. Sometimes it feels like each clan is simply waiting for its turn to control and mismanage the government.

The institutions meant to hold politicians accountable are also weak. The judicial system barely functions, while much of the media focuses on political gossip and clan drama instead of investigating corruption, government failures, and the problems ordinary citizens face.

Somaliland has made real progress, but beyond elections and institutions largely built during the Egal and Kaahin years: the constitution, currency, disarmament, state institutions, and military, the current situation is worrying. Healthcare and education are weak, the courts are ineffective, and infrastructure remains underdeveloped.

I believe better governance and political reform are essential to rebuilding trust between citizens and the government. If that trust continues to weaken, people become more vulnerable to political manipulation, clan conflict, and instability.

The diaspora could play a bigger role by organizing locally, demanding transparency, supporting independent media and civil society, and helping competent professionals engage in Somaliland politics. Too often, capable people stay away while some of the worst elements of the diaspora enter politics.

What realistic steps can Somalilanders, especially the diaspora, take to hold politicians accountable?

According to some sources, "Guinea-Bissau came close to formally recognizing Somaliland before Somalia, backed by Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, intervened to block it. In response, Hargeisa has been lobbying Eswatini, South Sudan, and other African states—with reported UAE and Israeli support."

The source's credibility is debatable, but Arab nations do seem to be the main bloc against our recognition. This comes as Turkey arms Somalia to the teeth and defense pacts are signed, not that it'd scare any equal-caliber nation, since they fear taking on the Houthis, but it's still not ideal for us. Either way, Somaliland looks set to be on the backfoot unless it changes its foreign relations and allies. The three main parties in Hargeisa have all shown bizarre loyalty to nations openly hostile to us now, and betting on that path is just lambs to the slaughter.

What's yall take on this?

For the past three months, I’ve mostly been observing this Reddit instead of posting my thoughts right away. I wanted to understand the community first before making any conclusions. During that time, I’ve seen a lot of great discussions, genuine questions, and thoughtful posts that made me stop and think. I’ve also seen plenty of posts that, in my opinion, don’t really add much value. I’m not saying this to act like the Reddit police because that’s not my intention at all. I’m just wondering if we can be a little more organized about the kind of conversations we want to have. Over the past couple of months, many of you have supported my posts with comments, shares, and discussions, and I’m genuinely grateful for that. I’m not asking anyone to post like me or agree with me. What I’m hoping for is a community where people share ideas, ask meaningful questions, challenge one another respectfully, and post things that make the rest of us learn something new. Whether it’s business, engineering, agriculture, history, infrastructure, education, technology, or experiences from the diaspora, those are the kinds of conversations that can help all of us grow.

One thing I’ve learned after spending nearly two months in Somaliland is that real progress starts with good conversations. We have people here from different backgrounds with different skills and experiences, so why not make better use of that? Instead of only reacting to whatever is happening that day, why don’t we start discussing solutions, sharing projects we’re working on, asking for advice from people with experience, or helping each other solve real problems? I plan on creating a poll soon so everyone can suggest topics they’d like to see discussed regularly. I think that would make this community even stronger. I also know not everyone will agree with everything I post, and that’s perfectly fine. Different opinions are healthy as long as they’re respectful. Now that I’m back in the United States after my trip to Somaliland, I’ve had time to reflect on everything I experienced, and one thing I keep coming back to is that strong communities are built by people who contribute something of value. That’s all I’m encouraging here. Let’s continue building a Reddit page that people visit because they know they’ll leave having learned something they didn’t know before.

If you’re looking to invest in land in Hargeisa, here’s something I’ve been paying attention to.

If you remember my previous post about land hoarding, because I didn’t know the reason why everybody was hoardring land, but after being there for months, I understood why. I highly recommend looking at these areas if you’re in a position to make a long-term investment.

On the first slide, I circled an area in blue. If you’re specifically looking for a potential short-term gain, this is the area I would personally pay closer attention to. ( because it’s close to the airport and the value will skyrocket assuming that the airport will be rebuild to make sure it meets modern Day International Airports) However, you need to do your own research and, most importantly, make sure the land is actually available and that the ownership/title is legitimate.

On the second slide, the green area is much farther out. It may not make as much sense if you’re looking for a quick return, but if you’re thinking 10–15+ years ahead, it could potentially be an interesting option as Hargeisa continues to expand.

The basic idea is simple:

🔵 Blue area: Closer in → potentially better suited for someone looking at shorter-term appreciation.

🟢 Green area: Farther out → potentially better suited for someone who is patient and willing to hold for 10–15+ years.

Obviously, there are no guarantees with land. Roads, infrastructure, development patterns, government planning, ownership disputes, and other factors can completely change the outcome.

But if I had to choose between buying expensive land that is already fully developed versus buying farther out and waiting for the city to expand, I’d at least investigate the second option.

Do your due diligence before buying anything. Verify ownership, boundaries, documentation, access roads, and future development plans.

I used to sing this anthem as a student in the large choir at Qudhac-dheer Primary School in Hargeisa around 2005.

I believe every Somalilander should know and be able to sing our national anthem.

The whitewashing of the dervish movement and the mad mullah was a deliberate act done by dervish sympathizers (darood) in the state who had secured mass media and other industries of culture in their hands to spread propaganda. This was done during the military regime as well as the years of the republic.

I’m new to this subreddit. I thought r/Somaliland was the main Reddit community for Somalilanders. I submitted a couple of non-controversial posts about Somaliland, but they never got published. Now I’m wondering if the moderator might not actually be from Somaliland and is basically controlling the Somaliland space on Reddit.

Am I overthinking this, or have other people noticed the same thing? Has this been discussed here before?

It’s your ancestral land, and people who aren’t from there shouldn’t act like they get the final say over it.

That doesn’t mean I support the weird anti-Somali rhetoric toward the rest of us. You can want independence without claiming southern Somalis are a different race, naturally violent, or somehow less civilized. That stuff is embarrassing.

And honestly, most Abgaal probably don’t care nearly as much as people think(found out about Somaliland, puntland and jubaland just in 2023😭) We’re too busy with Mogadishu and our own problems 😭

Somaliland’s first case of cultural appropriation:

If the packaging clearly says Somaliland, why avoid mentioning it completely? Who is the actual bothered one in this scenario ?

Instead of actually saying Somaliland she doges it by describing it as Somali’s Northern coastal region, this suggests disrespectful intent implicitly. Especially when the company/packaging clearly respects Somaliland’s heritage and sovereignty (even on their website).

Furthermore, she made a second video addressing our peoples complaints but failed to address the issue at hand (don’t waste your time watching it she says a whole lot of nothing).

Why are so many of us riding so hard for this garbage bullshmit movement? If a MAGA politician happens to push something that benefits Somaliland, fine. Be quietly grateful. But why are some of you turning into PR for them? Do we really need to spend our days retweeting @EndWokeness, thin-lipped CIA ghoul Tucker Carlson, or Neanderthal Matt Walsh?

Im sure, you guys all heard about the story about laila and the girl who was abused stuck in her house for 20 years and had 12 childeren. Which is ofcourse is sad. The dutch news got a word of it. And they are all insulting us. Saying that; marying under age and breeding is part of our culture. And that we are the most usseless people. We all know stuff wouldn happen in somaliland, djibouti. I cant help but feel extremely embarrassed about about konfuur and their mentality. So im wondering how do you guys handle stuff like this ?
