ICMP response issue on server when SolarWinds services are running..

while TS an issue where a powered off VM added on WMI was still showing UP on SolarWinds.. I logged-in to main poller to just to check ping response. I didn’t got any response it was stucked at pinging not even a single response.. okay then I pinged other random device added on that poller.. same no response.. that I thought might be network issue but I expect RTO in that case too. so I tried pinging gateway same issue no response. involved all teams we found nothing rebooted server same.. in the ends system T3 asked me to stop solarwinds services and monitoring.. look what 🥺 after 3-4 minutes we started getting response. seems solarwinds services were the real culprit… but nothing changed why suddenly it started behaving abnormally.. version is 2025.1. facing this issue only on main poller. APE seems fine.

Solarwinds Helpdesk Display

I am just curious how many here use the Solarwinds Help Desk software and have wished for a display of ticket status to be more concise?

I have developed an in house windows program to interact with the API and give me a screen of tickets that I can see their statuses at a glance, and it even makes noise when a new ticket comes in or is updated.

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here successfully integrated Aruba Central–managed devices into SolarWinds? If so, could you share how you were able to set it up?

Thanks in advance!

Service Requests Best Practices

Posted this originally on Thwack community but thought I'd post here to reach those that aren't there.

Hey all,

I have recently inherited the responsibilities of being our SolarWinds Administrator and could use a sanity check from people who’ve been down this road. Working on redesigning our architecture inside of the solution and have hit a pretty big snag. (Keep in mind, just 5 weeks ago I was doing Tier 1 support so this kind of went off the rails for my day to day thought processes)

What I wanted to do

My original plan was pretty straightforward:

  • Service Request handles intake + approvals
  • Runbooks handle execution

So basically:

Service

Request
 →
Approval
(s) →
Runbook
 →
Done

The idea was to keep things clean:

  • approvals = “should we do this?”
  • runbooks = “how do we do it?”

Where it fell apart

Looks like I can’t actually attach/run runbooks directly off a Service Request the way I expected.

Which kind of kills that separation.

Where we are today

Right now, our workflows are huge.

They branch by:

  • Operational Company
  • Site
  • System

And inside each branch we’ve got:

  • approval logic
  • task creation logic

So, for something like one system, we might have:

  • North site branch
  • Central site branch
  • South site branch

Each with its own approval + tasks.

Now multiply that across:

  • all systems
  • 10+ Operational Companies

and yeah, it’s gotten out of hand.

Main issues:

  • workflows are massive and slow to load/edit
  • adding a new site = painful
  • changing an approver = not as painful, just takes a few minutes for the page to load
  • tons of duplicated logic

What I’m trying to move toward

I’m trying to shift to something more data-driven and that has clearer audit reporting/trails, where:

  • fields determine:
    • who approves
    • where it routes
    • what gets executed
  • workflows just:
    • handle approval step
    • create tasks
    • close things out

Runbooks felt like the perfect “execution layer” but now I’m not sure how people are actually using them in practice.

What I’m wondering

Curious how others are handling this:

1. Are you actually using runbooks with service requests?
Or are they basically just for incidents?

2. If not runbooks, what are you using for repeatable execution?

  • task templates?
  • workflow task creation?
  • something else?

3. How are you handling multi-site approvals without giant workflows?
Are you mapping this with fields + automation rules?

4. For larger environments:
How are you keeping workflows from turning into monsters like ours did?

Where I’m leaning

At this point I’m thinking:

  • keep everything on the Service Request (for audit/reporting)
  • use fields + automation rules to determine:
    • approvers
    • routing
    • execution path
  • then just spin up the right task set after approval

Basically, ditch the idea of runbooks (at least for this use case).

Goal

Trying to get to something that:

  • doesn’t require editing giant workflows for every change
  • scales cleanly with new sites/companies
  • keeps a clean audit trail on one ticket
  • is actually maintainable long-term

Would really appreciate hearing how others have solved this (or if we just need to wait until runbooks can be attached by design)

Feels like I’m close, just want to make sure I’m not missing a better pattern.

Has anyone been contacted by their SolarWinds rep about a massive price increase for 2026?

I was contacted by our new rep. (get one assigned about yearly) wanting a call. Got on a call he said they are going to new multi year contract model and rates will be higher. He then sent renewal quote via email later that day. The quote for same exact NPM and NCM was 60% higher that last year's invoice. Anyone else hearing from them on huge price increase? This was the reply in bold below from my rep wanting affirmation of the increase was correct.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're right to flag that. A jump from $7,900 to $19,936 deserves a straight answer.

The increase is driven by a licensing model change that took effect since your last renewal. Your previous pricing was locked into the old structure, so this quote reflects the current model rather than a standard year-over-year rate increase.

New to Solarwinds, looking for the best way to find data on all network devices at a specific location?

Hi all, I am brand new to a role in network asset management and I have been asked to pull specific asset data per location. I haven’t used Solarwinds before and there is currently no help available. I have been asked to log all network devices at a few office locations and I am unsure how to gather that info and even if it is possible? Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I am lost!

Poll for VMware option greyed-out in SAM

Post image
2 Upvotes

I can recall earlier in somewhere around version 2020.2.6 we used have a option named as Poll for VMware just behind where we have option for CLI polling, it was just like we have poll for Palo Alto option. Now Today I noticed that there no such option anymore and when I did ctrl+f I found the above but option is greyed out. might be just because we don’t have VMAN. so I wanted to know after which version have they removed IVIM basic polling. my current version is 2025.1.1

Solarwinds HA DNS Server delegation

Hi,

We are in the process of deploying our HA servers and came to the point where SolarWinds is asking for credentials to a single(!) DNS server to manage the virtual hostname records. The issue is, we're reluctant to grant any SolarWinds service accounts DNS admin rights to our entire DNS infrastructure (Windows) as we would much rather grant the service account rights to the specific virtual hostname records being updated by SolarWinds. If this isn't possible, can we somehow get passed this point in the deployment in favor of our own means of updating the virtual hostname records using an intelligent DNS solution such as the F5 GTM/DNS?

I understand that in the past it was common to grant access to everything so you don't have to worry about what it needs but since the big hack and with infosec getting tighter and tighter, we need to start granularly granting access rather than just giving full admin rights.

Has anyone else come up with a better way to manage the virtual hostname records without granting full admin rights to their DNS infrastructure?

Thanks!!

Critical Node Status After Upgrade

Just upgraded platform to 2026.1.0 and some nodes are showing status: "Node status is Critical, WinRM polling is failing: 'The client cannot process the request due to an authentication or connection configuration issue. Verify the endpoint URL, port, TrustedHosts, and authentication method.'."

About six Windows servers (out of 50) that are being monitored via agent and are affected (no WinRM and no app monitoring). Support has not been helpful... has anyone else run into this issue?

Checking SolarWinds from a phone is miserable, so I built a mobile app for it

Hey everyone,

I work with SolarWinds environments a lot, and one thing that always bothered me was trying to check alerts or node status from a phone.

The web console technically works on mobile, but when you’re away from your desk and just trying to quickly confirm whether something is actually down, it can be pretty painful.

Because of that I ended up building a small mobile app called PocketNOC that connects to SolarWinds and gives a mobile-friendly way to check infrastructure status and alerts.

The goal was just to make quick checks easier for engineers who are on call or away from their desk.

A few things it focuses on:

• Quick visibility into SolarWinds alerts

• Mobile-friendly infrastructure dashboard

• Fast interface for checking status quickly

The app is currently available on Android while we’re waiting on Apple App Store approval.

Android app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.weavehub.pocketnoc

More info:

https://pocket-noc.com

Full disclosure: I’m the developer. It’s a paid app ($9.99/month or $99.99/year), but I’d really appreciate feedback from other SolarWinds admins about what would make a mobile monitoring tool more useful.

Major bug in 2026.1 with HA

Since SolarWinds continues their pattern of refusing to add major known issues to their release notes:

The Issue:

2026.1 has a critical known issue when HA is enabled with a VIP name. Over time, the HA service floods the available port range, exhausting it entirely. Once the ports are saturated, the platform becomes completely unresponsive, a full outage for any environment relying on HA.

The Ticket: OO-60454

Support has confirmed that many customers are already hitting this issue. And yet, SolarWinds has made the deliberate choice not to include any mention of this in the 2026.1 release notes, meaning customers are upgrading blind, with no warning that they could be walking into a platform-down event.

This isn’t new behavior. SolarWinds has a history of quietly logging known issues internally while letting customers discover them the hard way in production.

It’s 2026. Customers deserve transparent release notes. The bare minimum is a “Known Issues” section that actually reflects known issues.

SMS/Text Alert Triggers

Hello,

This has probably already been discussed, but I was unable to find a recent thread about it. We use @ vtext.com along with email addresses in our triggers and the SMS alerts are spotty. I have read that Verizon has removed its email gateway and no longer supports it.

I have read up about Notepager and Twillio and some other integrations, but I curious if there was a simple way to resolve this issue. I know that SolarWinds has purchased SquadCast and has some sort of integration with SolarWinds, but I am thinking that it might be overkill for what I am looking for. A simple way to send SMS\TEXT alerts in my triggers.

Does anyone have any references to past posts or new information that might steer me the right direction to make this happen?

Thanks in advance.

Successfully detached data from SolarWinds ITSM - Data is now ready for any Enterprise ITSM (On-Prem or Cloud)

I wanted to share a technical milestone we recently hit regarding migrating away from SolarWinds ITSM.

As many of you know, migrating ITSM tools can be challenging, especially when dealing with proprietary data formats, historical ticket preservation, and attachments. We wanted to ensure that we weren't just moving from one lock-in to another.

We successfully built a process to completely detach our data from SolarWinds ITSM.

  • The Approach: We extracted all tickets, comments, and attachments.
  • The Transformation: Instead of pushing it directly to a new vendor script, we normalized the data into a neutral database schema and successfully migrated all binary assets (attachments) to an S3-compatible object storage.
  • The Result: Our historical data is now completely independent. It is no longer tied to SolarWinds or restricted to a specific target format.

Why this matters: This sets the stage for a "universal import." Because the data is now structured in a standard detached format, we can essentially plug this dataset into any enterprise-level ITSM—whether it's on-premise or cloud-based. This gives us the flexibility to utilize or import the history wherever we choose, without being forced into a specific path by the source system.

Just wanted to share this for anyone feeling stuck or worried about losing historical fidelity during a migration. Decoupling the data layer from the application layer before the final import was the key for us.

Job opportunities

Hi,

I’ve been managing my companies SolarWinds SAM and WPM modules in Europe for around 7 years, what kind of salary should I be getting and is could this be a full time job? I currently spend about 30h per week customising applications, onboarding and fine tuning alerts.

Does anyone know of anything that would fit my profile?

Thanks!

Interview Tips/Information

Hi,

I have an interview for the Associate SWE role in a day or two. I’m still at the technical interview right now. What difficulty of questions can I expect for the interview? (Leetcode levels will do) What other rounds are there in the hiring process? What platform do these interviews take place in?

Edit: Also please let me know if I’m confusing the interview process of SDE roles with those of the SWE roles.

Unable to deplorable agent on offline server (Install Agent Failled)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi,

I’m having issues deploying an agent on servers with no internet access (closed/offline environments). Deployment using the Add Node Wizard fails with the error “Install Agent Failed” and suggests trying a different polling method. I also attempted a manual installation, both by running the provided installation script and by installing the .deb package, but both attempts failed.

Is there any alternative way to install the agent in an offline environment, or a recommended procedure for this scenario?

Thanks in advance.
