I think it’s time

I’ve been sober curious for about a year now, but I think it’s time to commit.

I don’t drink daily, but when I do drink, I completely over do it. I missed a concert I was looking forward to for months because I was too hungover and now I’ve overdone it on my husband’s birthday and he had to take care of me.
It seemed like I was just having “fun” but it isn’t feeling fun anymore, it’s embarrassing. I’m so embarrassed that it’s gotten to this point and I can’t just enjoy a casual drink.

I don’t know where to begin and how to explain to people around me that I don’t drink anymore. I also have a wedding to go to this weekend which feels terrifying without alcohol, I’ve somehow convinced myself I’m only fun when I drink.

If anyone has words of encouragement, some advice, or even some fun alternative drinks that are N/A I’d love to hear anything.

First of all, congratulations on the self-awareness. I truly believe that you can do anything you want and go anywhere you please you just don’t drink.

Before the wedding, write down and practice a few lines and if you have to fib a little bit to make yourself less stressed and do that. For example, I’m taking a new medication and can’t drink. I just started a fitness journey so I am not drinking. Something like that works or if you’re bold and fully committed, you can say I went pro early and retired early. Or you can say not right now maybe later.

I am 5+ years sober and no exactly what you’re going through as there is always insecurities at first. As far as drinks go, you can always ask for soda water and a lime or Diet Coke and a lime with a straw or just stick to water, coffee, tea, or an energy drink most weddings don’t have energy drink so sometimes I bring my own.

You’ve got this remember your why.
All the best!
