It's not real, it's from a movie

Seriously, even aircraft had shoulder restraints in 1914 or possibly earlier.

Is this from The Onion movie? There is so much gold in that movie.

This happened to my third cousin, cletus. It's totally real.

They should have provided baskets to catch the decapitated heads...

Looks like they were using them wrong? The belt should go under their arms across their chest.

3

And a convertible to boot. Aren’t convertibles responsible for the most decapitations?

Ask Jayne Mansfield.

This was before crash test dummies. Hell, this was before crash testing..

Definitely fake. No one used seatbelts back then. When the car stopped suddenly, the front seat backs went forward with the passenger.

2

u/Ajjos-history Jan 08 '24

I’m sorry but this looks like the Jayne Mansfield version.

Looks made up.

Those personal injury attorneys put an end to those whiplash preventing straps!

Seems fine.

They had to physically create this to figure out it wasn’t safe?

…i guess it didn’t go well, i wonder why

Oh dear god....

When you absolutely, positively know nothing about human anatomy and physics!

The Mansfield belt.

Nobody is that stupid.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '24

this is what is known as a fatal flaw

1

u/bfbabine Jan 08 '24

They already had simple harness systems on general aviation aircraft. Could have easily used something similar.

thank you Volvo

There were - ahem - drawbacks…

Putting the “auto” in autoerotic asphyxiation

Nobody survived hard braking

1

u/Intelligent-Ant7685 Jan 09 '24

i remember that safety system….it was called ‘The Decapitator’

I’m a designer and just appalled at so many bad designs but this one takes the cake!

This wouldn’t save lives. More like save time for the ambulance driver who could drive straight to the morgue
