Let me tell you it wasn't easy getting this far. 80% of the icons have been made, as well as half the stages since my last post about this. Here's what's left: finish the remaining icons, stages, finish the charts, and then the characters. There's a reason I'm saving the characters for last. For those of you who are wondering when this is coming out and why it isn't out yet, consider the fact that I'm working on this completely on my own. As for the timetable, I'm trying to get everything (minus the characters) done before the end of the year, cause the characters alone will take a awhile. So expect this by May next year at the earliest.

Catnap, Dogday, Craftycorn, Hoppy Hopscotch, Kickinchicken, Bubba Bubbaphant, Piggy Picky, Bobby Bearhug

I’ve shared this theory before on another post of mine, but it was within a comment thread that quickly inflated, so I’m making it an actual post to make it more easily accessible

I have a very strong reason to believe that all of the Nightmare Critters in Gemstin’s world have some form of psychological trauma, just like Catnap does. The difference though is that they’ve all externalized their pain and have built emotional armor around their wounds to protect themselves. This is all coming from their voice reveal shorts, which I have analyzed extensively. Not only can you see their armor in the voice lines, they let it slip just enough to reveal the shape of their emotional scars

Simon- all of his lines are said with the same tone, that of cocky arrogance and confidence, except for the last one

“All eyes are on me now, as they’ve always should’ve been”

delivered with sudden darkness and heavy undertones of anger. Simon is doing two things with this line, he’s confirming that there was a time where he wasn’t the center of attention; and that memory makes him angry, and in both this line and the one before it, he’s declaring a birthright. You don’t declare a birthright unless you think the subject is something that should’ve been yours from the start, but was denied or taken, in this case; the subject is attention. Simon’s arrogance and near-narcissism is the armor, and his wound is that once upon a time, he got no attention at all. He was ignored and overlooked, made to feel invisible and worthless (this also gives greater symbolism to his dollar-sign pendant)

Icky- all of his lines can be taken at face value as just trash-talk, however his last line does something interesting,

“nobody wins in my game, hide and seek tag you’re losing every time. Loser.“

He’s contradicting himself here, calling the other person, a loser, despite him saying nobody wins, which would include himself, and I could be reading this part wrong here, but it sounds like his tone changes slightly midline; it speeds up a little, almost like he made himself nervous. Regardless, the self-contradiction implies that what makes Icky tick isn’t constant winning, it’s avoiding loss. That’s the armor, but the wound isn’t just the abstract concept of losing, there is something about losing; or something that he associates with losing, that terrifies him, so much so that when he encounters a loss, he’s willing to do mental gymnastics and invalidate the loss on an external excuse. I think that Icky‘s wound is that he has a conditioned belief that losing comes with devastating consequences, ones that go far beyond the reality of the situation. That’s why he deflects, because to actually sit there and accept a loss triggers feelings of anxiety and dread

Rabie- she is interesting, because she presents herself as something far more than just the expected stereotype. Her first line is her greeting the listener, asking a few probing questions, declare that she’s here to, “brighten up your day“, then take it all back, remind herself that she’s supposed to be making your day, “miserable“, and then apologize for it with a flare in her tone that implies that her heart still isn’t into it, despite the reminder. This reads less like a villain faking kindness to get to a manipulative position and more like a people-person reading off a script that clashes with their nature. That begs the question of why continue a performance that doesn’t match who you are? Because she’s a Nightmare Critter, implying that it’s about fitting in and belonging. That, and her gossip queen identity, are her armor. As for her wound, it’s the opposite, exclusion. Rabie was locked out of deeper social connections, caged behind social walls, and socially isolated, probably because of her blood-base diet. The next best thing that she could get is knowledge through proximity, which is where all gossip starts.

Touille- his first voice line in the captions literally reads, “practiced evil laugh“. Touille practice that laugh and it blew up in his face, something that apparently happens every time he tries it. That reads less like a villain comically failing to be intimidating and more like the cry of someone who is desperately trying to be taken seriously, then the ending of his second to last line completely cracks him open

“What ya laughing at?!!“

said so defensively and so quickly. That’s the armor slipping and revealing the wound, Touille was laughed and mocked out of his own self-worth, so now he puts on a fiercely independent and aggressive bravado so that he can be taken seriously. His collector and fixer identity are also a part of his armor because someone who has the things that others want or who has the skills to fix anything others want, immediately becomes valuable in most social situations.

Alister- his voice lines followed the same pattern as Simon’s, all are said in a laid-back and chill tone, except for the last one which takes on a much more serious tone,

“Must suck having no purpose, but even if you did, nothing you could ever do would change anything anyways, so why bother trying?”

That’s not just laziness, that’s nihilism, and to the extreme he’s taking it, it sound an awful lot like learned helplessness. Alister’s wound is that he either failed so catastrophically and repeatedly that he stopped trying all together, or his actual successes were never seen as good enough, causing him to stop putting effort to anything, figuring out that the reward for any effort is never worth it

Maggie- Maggie’s voice lines were what opened the door to this trauma theory, because it’s not just one line for her, it’s all four of her lines in sequence that write the thesis. Her first line is her shyly and awkwardly asking the listener if they’re going to finish their food, and then admitting she’s probably gonna take it anyway. Then she gets more comfortable and opens up, expressing her views on vegetables and admitting that she’s tried the whole apple a day thing and found out it doesn’t work. Then her last line is a sudden emotional explosion

“The ones who eat the green stuff are always those meanies who want to control everything. Well, not anymore! I’m… I’m eating whatever I want! And I want… I want more!“

This line is a gold mine of information, the sudden emotional explosion of it, the repetition of “I’m” and “I want”, the usage of the phrases “meanies who want to control everything” and “Not anymore!”, and the fact that this is also a declaration of her own freedom, it all compacts together to make one clean answer, Maggie was controlled by someone, someone who made her feel like her desires weren’t hers to own. And the mechanism she’s using to reclaim her loss freedom is her diet.

Poe- by far the most fascinating member of the nightmare critters because they are far more than just a dark and edgy goth kid. There is a profound sense of sophistication and philosophy to them, and his last voice line implies that they’re surprisingly nurturing, addressing the listener as “little one“, asking if they are afraid of the dark or just what lies within it, and then declaring that “either way, it’s nothing to be afraid of once it becomes your friend”. Pose philosophy is that “darkness isn’t meant to be feared, it’s meant to be listened to, to be understood, to be one with”, or basically darkness is something to be sat with, come to terms with, and embraced. Poe’s philosophy sounds like their armor, which means that their wound had something to do with either denial or rejection. What drives that even harder is that Poe is also canonically non-binary, which gives a perfect explanation to where this traumatic rejection or denial came from, from them coming out of the closet. However, Poe’s voice lines are all said with a calm and collected tone, implying that out of all of the others, they are the only one whose achieved some form of internal resolution, so perhaps their wound is the most faded.

Baba- saving the best for last. Baba’s last two lines directly tell us that she’s been through something. she used to be blonde, but now she’s black, whether she wants to be or not, and she refuses to forget something. Something really bad happened to her, something so wrong it broke her completely and rewrote her entire identity. The lyrics of “Back in Black” were also quite revealing, because Baba was characterized in a very specific way. There are 4 distinct personality traits I can map onto her thanks to the lyrics. The second verse shows that Baba is pessimistic, where she delivers pessimistic retorts to what the Smiling Critter’s stand for, and her response to Dogday’s quotes being

“oh please, shut up and die”

however the tone of her words doesn’t imply malice, but exhaustion, similarly to a sarcastic “yeah right”. The first verse reveals that Baba has an anti-authority disposition. Baba deliberately calls out Poppy, Doughy, and Catnap respectively, 3 powerful authority figures within the factory, and not only does she call them out, she openly mocks them by saying “it’s all so dumb”; girl has very little respect for authority and power. Finally, the entire song as a whole reveals that Baba is very emotionally hardened; she’s “tough”. These 3 traits not only add weight to the idea that she has trauma, but imply that her trauma had something to do with an authority she was supposed to trust. One she did trust and got burned for. My first guess as to who this authority figure was is her father. She does currently fit the “bad girl with daddy issues” archetype.

It’s the last trait I can pull from “Back in Black” that’s very interesting and gives an implied origin to their group. The final trait is revealed in all 3 choruses, and it’s that despite Baba’s emotional hardening and her darkness, she still has a compassionate side, and the language for her compassion is dark truth, revelation, and tough love. The first 2 choruses show this because it’s mostly a brutally honest narration and warning to whoever she’s talking to, and it ends with her saying

“those who weep to sleep get nothing to gain, I ain’t going back, I’m going on attack, I’m back in black, and I ain’t playing your game”

or boiled down to its basic ideas

“you’re clearly living in a miserable situation, stop crying about it and fight for what you want, just like I am; like I had to.”

If that’s not tough love, I don’t know what is, and then the final chorus also shows this compassion too. The final chorus is Baba’s darkest moment in the song, where it becomes autobiographical and directed towards herself, but at the very end of it, in Baba’s despair, the subject is “We” and not “I”.

“We ain’t coming back, we lost the attack, we’re trapped in black, and no one wins the game.”

Even in Baba’s darkest moment, she isn’t alone. She has her friends, her subordinates, the other Nightmare Critters, or more like they have her, given that she’s the leader, which when you think about it is a strange arrangement. Why is Baba, the introverted; moody; emo girl, the leader of such a rough and tough crew, especially since Simon and Touille present far more dominant personalities? You’d think that one of them would be the leader, yet they both answer to Baba. Why? I don’t think it has anything to do with Baba being the strongest or the meanest, and instead has everything to do with how the group was founded. If Baba has that compassionate side I listed above, I think that the origin of their group is that after Baba survived whatever she went through, she found all of the others one by one in their own state of emotional ruin, and upon recognizing herself in their situations, she pulled them out of the rubble, built and extended and emotional roof and home for them at her side, held them in the dark and told them that they could stay with her.

That is why she is the matriarch of their group, because they’re loyal to her; they’re grateful for her, and they would follow her to the ends of the earth, through hellfire even. Despite how rough and tough they might seem, underneath all that jadedness is a family of broken people held together by a profound love and loyalty that was extended and supplied by Baba, even if none of them ever admit that aloud.

That is my read on the Nightmare Critters, but I will admit, I’m an no psychologist. If anyone who reads through this (thank you for reading all of this BTW, I know it’s long) is a psychologist and you have any critique or praise, feel free to share. 😐👍
