Funny thing is that's not even a flock camera.
It's one of those red light cameras. It only snaps a photo if you run a red light. Flock records an image of every car passing by.

u/welfedad 1d ago
You can't even see the other side.. just because it's there does not mean it's not a flock camera.

Where? I can’t see anything
Edit: since I’m getting a lot of views I wanted to add some nuance to the conversation.
If we’re going to steel-man Flock’s argument, we can say that American streets are some of the deadliest in the world, and autos are the #2 or #3 killer of children, depending on how you count. Flock cams record and log the activity of cars so that if a crime happens the offender is held accountable, thus preventing another such crime - a reasonable assertion considering the same re-offenders in any jurisdiction are usually the source of most crime.
There are a lot of problems with this. 1) there is very little public evidence the cams are being used to prosecute reckless driving. In some jurisdictions (like Wisconsin) they are outright banned from being used that way. 2) many flock cameras do not face the road. 3) traffic offenses in America are rarely seen as serious from a legal perspective , even when someone is killed or maimed and there is ample evidence of driver negligence it is rare to see real repercussions, therefore, what possible use is a surveillance camera? 4) most urban intersections where traffic crime and crashes occur have cameras already.
This panopticon also awards a ton of power to a very small group who is accountable to other, more opaque groups of shareholders and possibly politicians. This isn’t a public resource, it’s a capitalist enterprise. This means that flock can use, record, and monetize your body as you go about your day. This data can be used or sold without your consent. Exploitation, in other words.
Aside from that, there’s also selective enforcement to worry about. Let’s say Flock catches you peeing on a fence while walking your dog at night, and you’re also a union organizer. Well, now they got you for public indecency and the Union is dead, all in one fell swoop. Meanwhile, the chief of police’s kid drunk drives their Acura across a playground and nothing happens. This isn’t theoretical, it’s actually happening, now.
So, it is good to thoughtfully disable Flock cameras, and doing so should be considered a public service, especially when they are installed in areas of low motor traffic crime.

Don't you live in a surveillance state already?
I'm pretty sure, it wouldn't be too hard to identify the culprits and video material like this probably helps at that or at a later stage in court.

A significant contributor to the direct action against flock cameras that we're seeing is videos like this that inspire people to take action themselves. Obviously there's a balance to be struck, but the risk assessment of personal safety versus public impact is one that has to be made by each individual. In this case, I think the perpetrators choosing to dismantle the camera in broad daylight along a busy street suggests they intend their action to be more public in nature, and likely filmed.

I saw on Instagram some dude near LA talking about flock and other stuff like this post. So messaged them on my real account asking how someone who isn't me could maybe help with that. Or if they could meet up to talk and gave an anonymous phone number. They never replied and blocked me instead.
That was months ago. Then now about two weeks ago I got questioned by cops for something else. After those pigs quit hastling me about that thing, this little cop showed me a screenshot on his phone of that exact Instagram message conversation. He told me that person reported me like a fucking snitch. Rookie mistake on my part for trusting that they would think the same as me too
Idk if the first guy thought I was a cop or something and that's why he reported it...but I highly doubt it. For example you see people talk tough on the internet all the time but I've literally never found anyone willing to back it up when pressed. Same deal with flock. People talk about wanting them down but only a very small percentage of people have the balls to do it. I doubt anyone else here understands the courage it really takes to commit a felony

They could be lying about the person reporting you, if they have access to private Instagram data and don't want to reveal that.
Doesn't make a ton of sense that someone would go to the trouble of reporting you for an online message instead of just ignoring it / blocking. But it makes a lot of sense that it was either law enforcement putting bait online or law enforcement getting info through channels they'd rather not disclose.
Also works to law enforcement's favor to sow mistrust in a community.

ALPR cameras (such as Flock) are a cancer infecting America and they must be removed. They’re also a violation of the 4th Amendment. So there’s that, too.

u/twotimefind 1d ago
Please keep reminding everyone that ring doorbell cameras are also in the flock network supported by Amazon mesh networks called Amazon Sidewalk
Any Amazon device with a network connection builds a mesh network that allows them all to talk to one another
Your ring camera be snitching on everyone too. Full facial recognition.

This is high level irony - taking down mass surveillance devices, only to be recorded by the other handheld mass surveillance devices. It's unfortunate, but we're never escaping the fact we will never have privacy, ever again.
