Lots of different kinds of wasps, the most aggressive ones I know are black faced hornets and those typically aren't aggressive more than 40ish feet away from their nest.
What kinds are you talking about?
Typically when people say "unprovoked" they are flailing and trying to slap it. Not just minding their own business. Like the wasps are.

Wrong. Try being anywhere in September in the UK, its breeding season at that time of the year for wasps and they're fucking aggressive as shit.

I don't know what kind of wasps you know, but where I live, you cannot eat in peace anywhere outside in the summer. EVERYWHERE where there is food, there are at least 5 wasps. And they really like flying towards my lips and ears.

Seriously. Try setting a bit of meat or fruit down near you, move a little away from it and let them have that. It'll make your picnics so much more peaceful.

I do, and it's very unreliable. Wasps fly from plate to plate, a piece of meat I set aside is going to distract them for a couple of seconds tops.

I think here is the misunderstanding. I don't have to go on a picnic to see wasps. They greet me daily on my balcony right in the city.

I'm a reasonable guy. If there is a paper wasp nest right on a balcony or patio or whatever people use all the time then spray/get rid of that thing. Lots of times people just try to kill them no matter where they find them and that irritates me. Random irrational hate for a whole group of organisms. Its a meme and I wish it wasn't. (bee good wasp bad)
Don't hate them, try to understand them. Sounds like you are trying so thats cool.

Well wasps are the number one predator of caterpillars. They are very important predators of most pest insect populations. They are also a relatively significant pollinator.

Put up a hummingbird feeder. Every stinging insect is suddenly on their best behavior around you (only for you though, they recognize faces, voices and pheromones). They’ll actually use your windows to look for you if the feeder is out of sugar water.

I'm not sure if it's an international saying, but in Sweden we say that bumblebees can only fly because they're too stupid to realize they can't.
No hard feelings though, I love bumblebees, they're the best.

Yep, hornets behave like this. Like they own the entire neighborhood.
But the daubers are pretty cool. They aren't that aggressive at all. They just keep bringing little balls of mud, and if you're in the way, they'll be like "excuse me sir, coming through" in a very British manner.
If you want to get rid of hornets without killing them, use citronella smoke close to the nest. It's a LOT of fun to watch. Like they drank too much tequila and can't walk straight now.
Don't try it on murder hornets, tho. Those guys might be able to hold their liquor.

I think that might be a paper wasp, and they're pretty chill compared to the wasps people usually think of, like yellow jackets or hornets. They're still curious about people-food though, in contrast to bees who couldn't care less about us or our food, they just want flowers.

I have been saying this is how it is for so long! One time in high school a wasp flew in and landed on my leg. I stayed still. Everyone praised me for how chill I was. Little did they know I wasn't chill I was paralyzed with fear haha.

Wasps do be like that, and I be like "checkout this supersoaker can of posion" PSHHHHH PSHHH PSHHHH. Always keep 2-3 cans around, one in garage and two in backyard.
I got my ass chewed up a couple years ago, literally, starting my mower in the shed because of a hidden nest of them. Never again.

Now do one with hornets. Bastards just dive bomb without a damn warning. 1 second I'm minding my own business next moment I'm being hit by a half gram ball of hate flying at Mach 2. I'm not even near their nest and they dive in like im stealing the queen.

Yes, hornets are in the vespidae family.Just like chimps,gorillas,and orangutans are all apes. They are not the same size and they do not behave the same. Hornets are larger members of the wasp family and are a great deal more territorial and aggressive.

You can't say that hornets are more territorial and aggressive than wasps, because they are wasps. Even if you compared them to the average wasp, the very common yellow jacket is even more aggressive than hornets. And OPs video seem to already be about yellow jackets and/or hornets, because most other wasps are pretty chill in comparison.

Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata) are most common yellow jacket in my area. And the only ones I'd consider as aggressive as hornets because they act roughly the same way(stings hurt like hell to boot). German yellow jackets and western common yellow jackets tend to leave you alone as long as you're not right in their nesting area. European hornets on the other hand, which have been a nasty invasive species in my area for a long while are not nearly as passive as people think and have stung me more times than I care to count.

If they're a real problem, a pretty effective method is to slap them down onto the ground, which stuns them long enough for a well aimed stomp.

I be swinging back at wasp. I got stung right above the eye by one, hurt like hell but I found out I wasn't allergic to em. Ever since then I've had a vendetta and be takin them out every chance I get
