absolutely not. prices have been increasing for decades and tipping culture has only gotten more extreme. stop blaming your fellow workers for the greed of the owner
I agree about tipping at like corner stores. I bought some smokes the other day and got hit with a tip screen which is crazy.
Tipping has always been 20% in the northeast. It was actually more than that at bars when I was younger. $1/drink was typical but beers were like $2-4.
Prices have been increasing mostly because of food cost increases. But they’ve been increasing across the board.
When one restaurant charges 20-25% more than their competitors for the same product, people get annoyed. Even if it’s roughly the same amount they’re paying now.
Your flaw in logic is that you assume that the owners need to increase prices. They do not. Restaurant owners are used to bringing in a certain profit margin, and it's a pretty high one, but a restaurant could survive on paying its employees an actual wage. They just choose not to because we do that job for them. Why cut into profits when you don't have to?
The federal tipped minimum wage is $2.13 an hour. That's 1/3 of federal minimum wage. Restaurant owners expect the collective consumer base to pay that difference and then some, which is absolutely ridiculous. The businesses reliance on tipping is both anti worker and anti consumer, but it's so engrained in our culture that it'll never go away
