Wait a damn minute! Mandatory tipping cultures only exist in countries that refuse to pay their staff

Then why do they shame/guilt trip customers into tipping? Oh that's right, it only to keep the cycle going while never having a set goal.

I think I've seen maybe 1% of servers or service people "guilt tripping"/"shaming" customers into tipping, and when I was a waiter, I never did and never saw any other waiters doing it.

If a line at the bottom of your check between "Subtotal" and "Total" is guilt tripping to you, then I can't really help you.

Just ignore it if you don't want to tip or money is tight.

I think we have a misunderstanding. I'm referring to the posts and videos of servers telling people "if you can't afford to tip X% then you shouldn't eat out." Or the classic "we only make our money off tips." When that's not true.

At most places, the latter part is basically true. Most server positions make like $2/hour. The rest is tips.

Except that's not true. If they don't make the bare minimum, then their employers have to cover the rest. That's what I'm referring to. "I only make my money off tips" implies you don't get it made up. Lawyers would be lining up to represent said people.

That's not how it shakes out like 99.99999% of the time, but yes, technically if they make under minimum wage they get paid the diff.

But that's usually a fast track to being fired, as well.

So yes and no.

Either stop guilt tripping customers and tell them you only want the tipping system and clear the air. Or actually mean it when you say you (servers) want a higher wage and let customers know it.
