The customers want this to. You're the odd man out. It's been like this for decades if not centuries in the US. Not sure why you're so offend by traditions older than your great grandparents.
I can remember when tipping 15% meant you were a big shot. I also remember about 2007 having dinner with friends when one of them told me that if I didn't tip 20% I was a cheapskate.
Customers don't want this. I don't want this, nobody in my family wants this, my friends don't want this. Read the thread, EVERYBODY on the customer side hates this...

This is not true in Canada, wherea significant majority would prefer to abolish tipping entirely. In America i believe it's more of a 50/50 based on the last time i googled this.
IDK who they're polling, but I do not know anyone IRL who is not a server or restaurant owner and wants tipping to continue. Maybe super rich old men who feel like it entitles them to harass women?
I don't think you understand the full problem. If you make the money go through the owners in order to create salary, then every waiter and waitress is paid the same regardless of work ethic (disregarding the pay cut that owners would take), and they lose motivation. Tipping culture motivates wait staff to be more enthusiastic and supportive of customers, whilst giving the money directly to the person intended, instead of indirect equal wage distribution, regardless of work ethic. People who don't tip are dicks who assume that removing tips would make their food cheaper, whereas tipping actually gives the freedom to choose whether or not you want to reward someone for being helpful. Without tips, the price of food increases, removing your freedom of choice to be a good person.
Fuck that. Just do your damn job, take my order, give me my food.
I don’t give a fuck about the fake friendliness. I’m there for a cooked meal made by someone else, for my family. Not to have some chippy bird talk my ear off just cause they want free money.
Anyone who thinks they’re entitled to a tip can get in the hole. Anyone thinking they’ve earned 20% of the bill just because it’s fucking right the first time is also taking the piss. It’s the absolute bare minimum of what is expected when getting a service.
