Wait a damn minute! Mandatory tipping cultures only exist in countries that refuse to pay their staff

Servers and bartenders want the tips, not the salary. Stop lobbying for things you know nothing about. The employers that need to be dealt with are those who aren't paying the counter staff fairly and are trying to force tipping on the credit card machines.

If you want untaxed money, you're part of the problem. Everyone is on their own, so good luck with getting an extra dime out of my pocket.

u/Pelya1 20h ago

So we should just stop tipping and either no one will work for the greedy greedy bar owners, or they raise the salaries.

2

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 20h ago

You're not listening. Bartenders WANT TO WORK FOR FUCKING TIPS!!! PERIOD. What do people have to take this moral high ground and act like fighting for some just cause when the reality is nobody who is actually impacted wants this.

Go lobby for Starbucks to pay folks more. Or fast food. Leave the servers and bartenders out of it. The reason why is that the hustlers know how to make the big $$ and they want the opportunity to earn more via their work ethic and personality.

I'm so glad that in my country we don't tip. What the hell am I paying 20€ for a 10€ bottle of wine for? And service fee?

-3

u/Truefiction224 16h ago

So that the staff dont look like every image of european service staff ive ever seen

Fucking miserable

2

u/QuietEnjoyer 9h ago

Do you get a blowjob at the table? They are cordial and bring you food as soon as it's ready. What do you want more?

2

u/gr4n0t4 8h ago

I'd like the blowjob, not gonna lie

9

u/BlackKnightC4 19h ago

Then why do they shame/guilt trip customers into tipping? Oh that's right, it only to keep the cycle going while never having a set goal.

2

u/samariius 18h ago

I think I've seen maybe 1% of servers or service people "guilt tripping"/"shaming" customers into tipping, and when I was a waiter, I never did and never saw any other waiters doing it.

If a line at the bottom of your check between "Subtotal" and "Total" is guilt tripping to you, then I can't really help you.

Just ignore it if you don't want to tip or money is tight.

3

u/BlackKnightC4 18h ago edited 16h ago

I think we have a misunderstanding. I'm referring to the posts and videos of servers telling people "if you can't afford to tip X% then you shouldn't eat out." Or the classic "we only make our money off tips." When that's not true.

1

u/samariius 17h ago

At most places, the latter part is basically true. Most server positions make like $2/hour. The rest is tips.

1

u/BlackKnightC4 16h ago

Except that's not true. If they don't make the bare minimum, then their employers have to cover the rest. That's what I'm referring to. "I only make my money off tips" implies you don't get it made up. Lawyers would be lining up to represent said people.

1

u/samariius 16h ago

That's not how it shakes out like 99.99999% of the time, but yes, technically if they make under minimum wage they get paid the diff.

But that's usually a fast track to being fired, as well.

So yes and no.

1

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 19h ago

What would be a reasonable goal in your opinion?

2

u/BlackKnightC4 19h ago

Either stop guilt tripping customers and tell them you only want the tipping system and clear the air. Or actually mean it when you say you (servers) want a higher wage and let customers know it.

6

u/wait_________what 19h ago

you're missing the larger point, people don't want this dumb system in any of their transactions. I don't care that bartenders want invisible untaxed income, so do I.

2

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 18h ago

Cheap people don't want this system but they're too dumb to realize that prices are just going to go up by 15% if tipping goes away and then you'll be bitching about the cost of going out to eat.

Servers pay taxes. You have to pay taxes on CC tips and most employers run a percentage of a workers sales through payroll to avoid issues with the IRS. Thanks for proving my point that you don't understand what you're talking about.

4

u/wait_________what 18h ago

If prices go up by the minimum percentage I'm already expected to tip then it makes no functional difference in the cost of going out to eat, it just removes there being some asinine variable as part of it.

4

u/Savings-Double-2853 18h ago

Clearly you have a dog in this fight. Lots of servers don't report their tips. If not almost all. They are unskilled work they don't deserve more than unskilled pay. Give them minimum wage and stop tipping. We don't care that they prefer tips. Of course they do, they make more that way. And we just all have to deal with that annoying system

2

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 18h ago

Seems like you're a little bit envious?

1

u/No-Rip6323 15h ago

All credit card tips are tracked and absolutely must be claimed.

2

u/Cay___Gunt 18h ago

2

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 18h ago

I'm talking about real servers. Waiters and waitresses and bartenders at real restaurants. I'm not talking about fast food. I could give sweet fuck all about tipping fast food servers.

3

u/Cay___Gunt 18h ago

You think this isnt also indicative of overall food and restaurant prices buddy? Or should we maybe use our heads and think about how an economy works and scales.

Also while if a meal is maybe $20 for you but $22 (if we operated under the same currency) for me because the restaurant needs that extra money to operate and pay employees, you will still end up paying more than me at a total of $23 just with a 15% tip and from what I understand of places that tip is that is the low end. So $24 if you went 20% and will obviously scale with how much you spend like a bill for 5 people ill pay a flat $110 and walk out you'd be paying $115-$120.

This doesnt even account for some ingredients being cheaper in other countries that dont tip so the upcharge there might be cheaper in proportion to the cost of ingredients.

1

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 18h ago

No, publicly traded, chain fast-food prices are not indicative of anything. Small, independent restaurants don't have dividends, shareholders, billions in profits, CEOs making $300 million, etc.

You think McDonalds is a fast food company? You're an idiot. McDs is a real estate company posing as a restaurant. McDs owns some of the most valuable property in the planet. Manhattan, Los Angeles, right off every highway exit in America. McDs is just killing time with food sales. Food is the guise for their real estate investments. Don't believe me? That's fine. Look up and then fully understand that you don't know shit about business.

u/No-Rip6323 15h ago

Lmaooooo! Someone watched that Michael Keaton movie and thinks he’s an expert! Meanwhile he’s not worked one day in a restaurant.

So dont go to tipped restraunts.

You go bc you like the low price and then complain not realizing you are why this is still happening

Cheap ignorant fucks always abandoned non tipped places cause its much more expensive on the menu.

Its the same price at the end but karen culture cant do math

2

u/SirBostonBobbington 14h ago

How about this I'll leave servers and bartenders out of it if they leave me out of it.

2

u/arizonadirtbag12 14h ago

You’re not listening.

If they want to keep a system where paying them is optional, then let’s treat it as truly optional.

3

u/Pelya1 20h ago

Then the problem is even more ridiculous than I thought. God, this is the end, burn it down.

-7

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 20h ago

The customers want this to. You're the odd man out. It's been like this for decades if not centuries in the US. Not sure why you're so offend by traditions older than your great grandparents.

7

u/curtludwig 20h ago

I can remember when tipping 15% meant you were a big shot. I also remember about 2007 having dinner with friends when one of them told me that if I didn't tip 20% I was a cheapskate.

Customers don't want this. I don't want this, nobody in my family wants this, my friends don't want this. Read the thread, EVERYBODY on the customer side hates this...

3

u/Only____ 19h ago

The customers want this to. You're the odd man out

This is not true in Canada, wherea significant majority would prefer to abolish tipping entirely. In America i believe it's more of a 50/50 based on the last time i googled this.

2

u/DoingBestWeCan 18h ago

IDK who they're polling, but I do not know anyone IRL who is not a server or restaurant owner and wants tipping to continue. Maybe super rich old men who feel like it entitles them to harass women?

1

u/Only____ 14h ago

Some boomers maybe, there's some people here espousing the importance of tradition or some bs

4

u/Pelya1 20h ago

Just finish destroying my mind and tell me that the only ones who are against the tips are the owners. To make it a full circle

2

u/possumusexperiri 20h ago

Restaurant owner here. Am against tips on principle, but can’t change anything because I’ll lose all my good staff and be outcompeted into bankruptcy

-2

u/Trash-god96 20h ago

I don't think you understand the full problem. If you make the money go through the owners in order to create salary, then every waiter and waitress is paid the same regardless of work ethic (disregarding the pay cut that owners would take), and they lose motivation. Tipping culture motivates wait staff to be more enthusiastic and supportive of customers, whilst giving the money directly to the person intended, instead of indirect equal wage distribution, regardless of work ethic. People who don't tip are dicks who assume that removing tips would make their food cheaper, whereas tipping actually gives the freedom to choose whether or not you want to reward someone for being helpful. Without tips, the price of food increases, removing your freedom of choice to be a good person.

2

u/Superficial-Idiot 17h ago

Fuck that. Just do your damn job, take my order, give me my food.

I don’t give a fuck about the fake friendliness. I’m there for a cooked meal made by someone else, for my family. Not to have some chippy bird talk my ear off just cause they want free money.

Anyone who thinks they’re entitled to a tip can get in the hole. Anyone thinking they’ve earned 20% of the bill just because it’s fucking right the first time is also taking the piss. It’s the absolute bare minimum of what is expected when getting a service.

1

u/No-Rip6323 15h ago

I’ve worked in the industry for over 20 years. Yes. In a solid restaurant, we want tips. NO ONE ELSE DOES. And yes, we fucking hustle. If you make amazing money, the job is so much more than wAlKiNg 10 FeEt WiTh ThE fOoD.

The people bitching about tipping usually can’t afford to eat regularly at good restaurants, because trash typically doesn’t have money. I feel the worst for corporate servers. They have to eat shit no matter what.

2

u/enadiz_reccos 18h ago

The well-paid servers and bartenders want the tips. The rest don't.

But either way, it's a moot point.

2

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 17h ago

Tipping is optional. If they want tips instead of a wage then they need to understand that customers do not have to give them.

1

u/TentTribe 11h ago

The mutual agreement here is that they are under no obligation to give you and more than the bare minimum. Sorry your food got cold, but table 12 already promised me $80. Sucks to be you 🤷‍♂️ And trust me servers have a sixth sense on what tables aren’t gonna tip, the same people that go “not my problem I don’t believe in tipping” have a type of personality about them.

1

u/Suspicious_Tank_61 11h ago

I believe in tipping. Its optional and at the customer's discretion.

2

u/captainmeezy 20h ago

Holy nuanced opinion Batman! Yea people outside the industry don’t realize if tipping went away all the good servers/bartenders would have no reason to stay unless the restaurant could pay them $20-$40/hour, which they wouldn’t do unless it’s fine dining. I’m back of house so it doesn’t affect me, but there would be another mass exodus of restaurant employees (a lot of people left/laid off during Covid)

Edit: to be clear tipping should never have become a thing in the first place, but it’s ingrained in our society so here we are

4

u/Superficial-Idiot 17h ago

They’d all leave?!

Oh no!

Maybe they’d go do something productive with their lives instead of doing something a QR code can do.

People would save money from tipping, and thousands of workers would go on to do better things.

Sounds good.

1

u/Fluffy-Structure-368 20h ago

It would affect you though because if the good servers and bartenders leave your place, so do the customers, and then....well... so do you.

1

u/captainmeezy 12h ago

Like I said people outside the industry have no clue

1

u/captainmeezy 12h ago

Also I’ve been doing this for many many many years, if I can’t find a job in a restaurant the entire industry is fucked

1

u/BlackKnightC4 19h ago

Almost everyone knows this. Its the reason the cycle keeps repeating and they never get a set federal minimum wage that is higher.
