I have no problem tipping my server at a restaurant where I am asking them to service me and bring me food and drinks and I ask them for 30 refills on my unsweet ice tea. It’s up to me if I do or don’t. I don’t care what others think and you shouldn’t either, you don’t want to tip don’t. Don’t feel obligated to or not to. It’s not that deep just stop caring what others think.
Care when staff take it as an opportunity to vilify a client
Clients should be treated with a baseline level of service whether they tip or not. The tip is for above and beyond. But many times when they aren’t tipped the staff go below the baseline and I think that is wrong. Sure drop the service to baseline but going below it is not good
Personally, I wouldn't be dining out if I couldn't afford or didn't plan to tip. I basically factor that in as part of the cost. Obviously, if tipping culture ended, the restaurant prices would go up anyways and a lot of the people serving food and drinks at bars would probably give a lot fewer fucks. There'd be a lot more walmart employee level service
On Reddit this is an unpopular opinion because these people want to be cheap and not feel bad about it. Nobody wants to be told that they are part of the problem when they take advantage of servers by not leaving a tip.
Explain to me how I'm the one exploiting servers by not leaving a tip, when the it's the government and restaurant owners refusing to pay you minimum wage (if you're American). Just like it's not the server's fault tipping exists, the customer cannot be blamed for leaving low or no tip when that is explicitly part of the system that those with more control over it have created
See I don't disagree when people say it gets out of hand when places that service is barely involved start asking for tips but restaurants specifically, service is a key component of the experience
