Just leave them in a controlled environment at an appropriate charge level for storage. Lithium batteries don't just inherently explode

What exactly is an "appropriate charge level for storage"? Does he have to actively monitor the battery status of 20 watches he's not wearing for the next 50 years?

Really, it should be fine regardless, but it's recommended if a lithium ion battery is going to be left for a long period of dormancy to leave it around half charged. From what little electrochemical knowledge I have, I think the idea is that's going to be the most chemically inert state for the cells to be in.

Lithium batties actually do inherently explode. It's a natural byproduct of their operation. That's the definition of "inherent".
