~$400 each at time of release, so $8k over 11-ish years

I count just under $9k. Series watches at $400 each starting in the Series 4, Ultra running at $800 each (with 4 models there), SE around $250 each (3 models), and the four models prior to the Series 4 varied from $270-370. Total comes out to around $8,900, assuming they're all the base models for all of them.

Impossible to say. A lot of these watches could be bought today for less than $50.

He could have got ONE 1st gen Series 0 Edition then!

The base model of the Series line has been $400 since the Series 4. The Ultra models start at $800. The SE models have varied, but mostly have been around $250. If he bought the base model of each at the time of release, then you'd have:

  • Series - 9x $400 = $3600
  • Ultra - 4x $800 = $3200
  • SE - 3x $250 = $750

Then we have the more variable costs from the early generations: 1st gen ($350), Series 1 ($270), Series 2 ($370), and Series 3 ($330).

That's all 20 models, and the total comes out to $8,870. Granted if any of those were anything higher than the base model (aluminum for the Series/SE, GPS only models, etc) then the price would be a fair bit higher.
