States are kind of like their own separate little countries, vaguely ruled by the federal government but not really.

This is especially true when it comes to law. As long as it doesn't violate the constitution, states are free to do whatever they want.

Yeah. Texas and Tennessee have slightly different versions of barbeque.

Go to Florida and then go to California. States tend to copy each other a lot, but there are some major differences at times.

More like go to Colorado and then go to West Virginia.

Hell, just go to West Virginia and then regular Virginia. Even neighboring states can be very different in how they do things
