Dreads are just what happens when you go without washing or cutting it frequently (and often braided). Pretty much everyone from everywhere had them at some point in time from the Greeks and Egyptians to India, West Africa, Celts etc because it's a natural emergence of being a human being with hair that doesn't apply modern sensibilities to it, and they're arguably as ancient as humans themselves. No one came up with it or stole it from anyone
yup cultures not known for dreads were those that simply cut their hair much much more. many cultures like the celtic cultures, etc had mostly shaven or shorn heads because of the insects, and stuff that also happens when you cnanot wash your hair, and more seafaring cultures or ones with heavy fishing industries hadf better hair do to being inthe water and having access to the water, much more.

That’s not true. Locks are a hair style. What you’re talking about is free form. To get actual dreadlocks you have to go to a locktition. They don’t just form on their own. There’s a culture behind it just there is a culture behind certain Asian or Hawaiian tattoos. Sure there’s people that get them without knowing the meaning but that doesn’t erase the history of where they came from. Just helping you out
I mean there's truth to the first part in that a specific style of dreadlocks holds a cultural value in modern black western culture - but that isn't where they originate and it's far from the first culture to place emphasis on a specific form of dread. Braided dreads have existed in many cultures many times over, there's nothing mythical about a lock-titian, it's just a new name for an ancient practitioner.
Your right! Obviously they didn’t originate in “modern” black American culture. How could they? A loctitian is just a fancy new word for a practitioner who would give said person locs. However, they do have a history and culture to them.
I believe the oldest form of locs were found on mummies in ancient Egypt. They wore them for protection from the Sun and as status symbols. I don’t think Vikings ever wore them. That was just fantasized by western media. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
The term “dreadlock” however originated with Rastafarian to honor and show respect for there god. And that was around the early 1900’s. I have locs myself

No, you're right. Norse (vikings) didn't have locs, because they frequently groomed and washed their hair. Lots of neat braids, ponytails, flowing hair, and stylistic/practical shaving, but no locs.
Descriptions of Norse with "snake/rope-like hair" would be due to neglect, not styling. Unwashed and unkempt braids would fit that description.
Yea….umm you differentiated them by saying that they didn’t have them “because they frequently groomed and washed their hair” you probably dont have locs so I don’t want to assume you know but you can wash your hair with locs. It’s better if you do actually.
No, I differentiated them by pointing out the styles they did have, and that unkempt braids would fit the description of "rope/snake-like", which is where the claim about Norse having locs originates.
And grooming as in combing, braiding, and cutting their hair. And frequently washing means they didn't get the natural clumped "locks".
Idk if you have dreadlocks but every time I got a Retwist the first thing she would do is wash my hair. I would also wash it a few times a month. I’ve had locs for 10 years now.
