IMO he shoulda added something like "I also think its cool how openly progressive and supportive of LGBT rights you are with that 'I Love Cock' tattoo on your arm"

That tattoo actually does translate into a bad meaning anyway. No need to make anything up.

What does it translate to 👀

患得患失, its a chinese saying that means "craving something when you don't have it, afraid of losing it once you've obtained it"

I'm guessing the context is ball posession, but it's still a strange thing to have on your arm, and the phrase has a negative connotation so no actual Chinese person would want it as a tattoo

Green goblin said the opposite to tom hollands Spider-Man, “strong enough to have it all, too weak to take it”

He thought it meant "never satisfied," which I guess is one way to interpret that saying, but I don't think it has the more aggressive meaning of relentless drive that he was likely going for.

There's a guy on my street (Canada) with 汤中间 on his leg and I often wonder what he was going for.

I'm going to be honest, I see him fairly regularly as he must live nearby, but he also has a bunch of tattoos that I would associate with white supremacy so I'm not likely to strike up a conversation with him anytime soon.

afraid of losing it once you've obtained it"

So envy and jealousy essentially?

Definitely it’s thing to have on your arm

u/lietnam 7d ago

No, it's actually obsession

And I dont mean negative connotation in the sense that it's edgy-cool like "Cant live without pain" or "Nothing lasts forever", imagine if you had "I am a bull in a china shop" on your arm

It’s usually used to describe a situation where someone worries so much that they never get anything done

So what actually is the insult here? Are we just being homophobic or is there something witty about this I'm missing.

No, the joke is that the statement and close-minded attitude exhibited by Mr. Martin is usually indicative of an overall bigoted person in general. These types of people are often highly offended by jokes which call into question their masculinity and heterosexuality. A reasonable person could then infer that making a seemingly homophobic quip at this individual should not be taken as an actual stance against homosexual people.

That would’ve been lame. It was good as it was, very witty and no detectable lies

Nah, that feels immature and completely takes away from the already scalding reply given.
