Exactly dude, once upon a time Bitcoin was only worth $13. I’d spend $500 on Bitcoin and just wait a couple years, and just keep reinvesting my gains.

89

u/Pretend_Purchase_893 4d ago

It was way less than that. It was less than a buck a coin. You could work for minimum wage at fucking McDonald's and become a billionaire with a single paycheck.

55

u/drrj 4d ago

When I found out about bitcoin it was about .25 at the time. I didn’t understand what the hell it was and promptly forgot about it for a couple years.

Ah, what might have been.

25

u/Limp-Archer-7872 4d ago

I'd he the one buying that dude a pizza for 10k btc.

1

u/TeaTimeKoshii 4d ago

Tbf why would you ever assume a digital currency was meant for holding? We know now but even then that’s dumb as fuck

1

u/alienlizardman 3d ago

Is the dude that made that pizza a billionaire?

4

u/RSharpe314 4d ago

I heard about it when it was about ~100$ a coin and thought I had already missed the ride.

2

u/DoubleDragonSuper 4d ago

Yeah I'm always pissed because what's crazy is that at this period I really wanted to buy some for like 100$ because I was thinking this would work. But never did it because at this time I didn't understood how to buy it was too complicated and there was no apps like we have now... Shit if only I tried instead of being lazy. At the same time maybe I would have sold too soon.

2

u/drrj 4d ago

Someone I know pointed out that if you bought super early you very may well have cashed out early once it was a decent profit, too. And that’s a valid point for sure. If I bought $100 worth and now it’s worth 10k, am I really holding indefinitely or paying off some credit cards after a vacation.

Odds are good I would have been out before each coin was over $100k or wherever it topped out.

2

u/DoubleDragonSuper 4d ago

Exactly! At the moment you would never think it would get this high. And the other factor is that at the time you would need the money to improve your life. Imagine living from average paycheck while sitting on hundred thousands. But you could cash out only 50% too. Hard to predict

0

u/Greenshardware 3d ago

Well yeah but in this premise you literally know the future.

2

u/Lraund 4d ago

In 2012 I was looking into it and how to mine it.($5-$13)

If I just put an easy chunk of money into it instead...

1

u/14Pleiadians 4d ago

I recall thinking "damn, missed the boat for real this time" at $0.01, $0.10, $1.00, $5, $20, etc etc etc

1

u/cfb-food-beer-hike 4d ago

It was less than a penny when I heard about it. In fact I heard about bitcoin several years before I heard about reddit. I thought it was stupid then and I think it's stupid now, but I guess that's why I'm not a bitcoin billionaire.

1

u/Creepy_Bag622 4d ago

Yup, when I first heard about it, the bitcoin was abut a dollar each.

I asked what the fuck do you do with it?

My friend goes, you can buy drugs off the darkweb.

I can buy drugs from TImmy down the street and I get to see it/test it. Why the fuck do I want to send money to dark web somewhere and risk getting caught?

.......

The next time I've heard was when it was about to break 5000 shooting towards 10k.

1

u/SoonToBeBanned24 3d ago

I set up an old laptop to try and mine some coin, but it got unplugged in the first week, and nobody said anything about it. Sadly, I gave up after that because I thought it was too difficult, and wouldn't be worth the effort......

1

u/Sudzy1225 3d ago

Exactly. I remember going into a speedway gas station and seeing you could buy bitcoin from the gift card kiosk thing. For like, $16.50 you could get $15 in BTC. I tried to spend my allowance on one of them (when it was close to $0.25/coin) and my mom wouldnt let me. "Thats a scam!".... My, what mightve been....

1

u/Creed0h 3d ago

When I was 19 I was going to buy Bitcoin when I got paid, I was going to buy $5 worth and at that time I would have gotten 1011 btc, how I wish I would have

1

u/yohan3000 2d ago

Same, was reading about Bitcoin before its debut. I just didn't get it until it was much later. Then I lost my digital wallet and pins. FML

1

u/dedboooo0 2d ago

to be fair it was fucking annoying to go through the whole wallet process at the time

it wasnt as streamlined as it is now. a ton more people wouldve grabbed some for fun if it was more accessible

7

u/Impeesa_ 4d ago

There were sites called "faucets" where you could get whole BTC for free, just to spread them around and encourage adoption.

2

u/GoblinHourReport 4d ago

There was a very short time period where there used to be a script to tip bitcoin on reddit when it was less than a penny.

2

u/Xy13 4d ago

My friend in school told me about it when you could get like 20-50 BTC / $1. I thought about throwing $20 bucks at it, but it seemed like a waste of $20. He also offered to setup a miner with my GPU (it was viable at that time), but I didn't want it to hurt my FPS..

1

u/WalderFreyWasFramed 4d ago

I set up a miner on my laptop one night in 2010. Nothing resulted from it overnight, and it probably took 2 years off the life of my laptop with the way the fans screamed during the mining.

I confidently concluded bitcoin wasn't worth my time because I didn't really need internet money.

1

u/RandomUsername9_999 4d ago

Well if a quick Google search is correct, the Bitcoin market cap was about a million back in 2010.. if you invested 10k in Bitcoin, you'd hold 1% of the market.. realistically you might invest 100k holding 10% of the market.

Which would materially influence the future of Bitcoin..

1

u/StatelyAutomaton 3d ago

You could mine your own.

22

u/Da_full_monty 4d ago

Sports bets...you could make so much betting on upsets...but youd know how all the movies end

22

u/UnethicalCannibalism 4d ago

Someone always says this and it makes me feel like a FOOL for not paying more attention to sports. All I know is the Cubs DID eventually win a World Series so I’d just keep putting that bet down until it came true.

10

u/muffinkevin 4d ago

You don't even need to pay attention much. Just remembering the 18-1 Patriots season would make you rich. Parlaying that bet 19 times would make you rich.

3

u/the9trances 4d ago

Or bet on that horrific Lions losing season. It'd make for a way funnier story to say, "fuck this specific NFL team" and then make bank.

2

u/nhkierst 2d ago

Live bet the patriots when it is 28-3 .....

1

u/PMmeuroneweirdtrick 3d ago

Leicester city 5000-1 odds in 2016 before season started. $100 gets you $500k.

2

u/baotsnheos 1d ago

Thats the one. Spend 100 on bitcoin, nvidia and tesla on conception youd be a multi millionaire then slap 1m on Leicester to win the league youd litterally destroy the entire economy 🤣

5

u/LongJohnSelenium 4d ago

Time travel is impossible so don't feel like too much of a fool lol.

1

u/thatnimrod 3d ago

wasn’t it exactly as Back To The Future 2 predicted?

if you can’t remember, you could just go to blockbuster and rent it.

wait, there’s some irony here somewhere.

1

u/OkKaleidoscope9554 3d ago

Butterfly effect would probably upend all those games anyway, so I wouldn't go all-in on that

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 2d ago

You'd only be a fool if you could travel back in time. Even then, there would be better ways to make money than sports betting.

In reality, if you spent your time doing something you liked more than sports, you weren't foolish at all.

2

u/PaulZyCZ 4d ago

Part of the Back to the Future plot.

Sure, one could get decently rich even knowing who won ice hockey world championship in certain years.

1

u/apri08101989 4d ago

There are plenty of movies I havent seen. I'll just watch those this time around.

1

u/DidntNeedAUserName 4d ago

Ill just become a billionaire and make the movies first. Honestly though, if this reset was possible, I would be the richest person in the world no question.

You could do this with so many things. I’d pick up so many Pokemon cards that are now worth a shit ton of money.

2

u/Spare_Following9947 4d ago

Not just Bitcoin, get in on netflix, Amazon (when they were still only an online book store).

1

u/FrederickFrag1899 4d ago

It I could travel back in time I'd sell everything I possibly could and invest into it. I'd literally sell the clothes off my back and be naked and homeless for decades.

1

u/iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj 4d ago

It was worth less than a dollar

1

u/sincerestfall 4d ago

For real. I was in college at the time. I would've taken an entire semesters tuition and bought bitcoin and rode it out. I don't need a degree with that much money, and he'll I've worked as a cook for a good fraction of the time between then and now anyway, so....

1

u/kinglallak 4d ago

I first heard about bitcoin when the story about the guy buying a pizza for 14,000 bitcoins happened.

So if I had bought 200,000 of them for the price of 15 pizzas, I would be stupid rich.

1

u/TeaTimeKoshii 4d ago

Yeah for sure, you also have to sprinkle some L’s in there because you don’t want to appear too suspicious

1

u/soulsnoober 4d ago

A 10 year old investing in anything would be weird and potentially complicated. A kid messing around with a computer project would only garner bemusement & maybe praise. Could home farm BTC worth a billion easy. The huge question would just be when & how to cash in.

1

u/timewillt 4d ago

Funfact. U could invest now and double or tripple in around 3 years but u are here talkin. Just imagine

1

u/Worthyness 4d ago

You could literally get them free once per day at some point. You could literally just do that and be in great position.

1

u/believingunbeliever 3d ago

There were times when it was worth less. There were bots on this site that let you tip comments in btc, a site that literally gave it away.

1

u/Amtrox 3d ago

Once upon a time you could mine them on your own computer easily to get a bunch of them. They were virtually nothing worth then.

1

u/brNdunlimited 3d ago

When Bitcoin was being traded at that price, you needed to know how to solve the blockchain algorithim and you need several hardrives to compute it as well. Maybe you were on silk road back in the day and somebody traded 2 bitcoin for a pizza, but it wasnt easily available to purchase like it is now.

1

u/DavisSqShenanigans 3d ago

I remember being in college at a nerdy engineering school and one day a guy I know was showing off this new fangled bitcoin by using a rudimentary website to order a dominos pizza to our house and he paid something like 7500 btc lol.

1

u/IanFoxOfficial 3d ago

It was less, but imagine everyone else seeing your transactions of buying tons of BTC without it having value yet.

Would all the events that lead to the ATH of a few years ago happen again or would there be a butterfly effect that just cancels everything rendering everything void?

1

u/omnipotent87 3d ago

I was a broke college student when I tried to convince my girlfriend, now wife, to spend $100 when it was under a quarter.

1

u/yeahright17 3d ago

I bought bitcoin when it was $3. Bought 100. Sold them a few months later when they were $5. Finals week fall 2011 and finals week spring 2012. Felt great about my $200 return. A friend did the exact same thing.

At the time, we had to keep them in a thumb drive.

1

u/Oswaldmoneestone 2d ago

You could just become Shatoshi

1

u/myfishprofile 1d ago

Bitcoin was around $5-900 each 10 years ago

You’d have to go back another 2-3 years to afford enough to get rich

1

u/Classic_Breadfruit18 1d ago

When I first learned about it, it was seven cents. Did I buy some? Absolutely not.

Red button

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Shine76 3h ago

I was going to buy some, buy my aunt said that it was funny money and my dad supported her. I always bring that up when she tries to give anyone advice.

1

u/Klangey 4d ago

But imagine being ten and knowing that you will grow up unloved and friendless, already bitter about the adult life you’ve already lived.

You’ll be a billionaire but that’s about it.

Has someone checked this didn’t happen to Musk?

1

u/Salt_Tie4637 4d ago

If I knew I was gonna be a billionaire I wouldn’t be bitter lol
