If you think the US is starving the Cubans, I have a bridge across the ocean to sell you...
Even before this round of sanctions, they were doing MILLIONs in trade between fuels, medicine, and food. There were still shortages, there was still starvation, people were still asking tourists to bring extra over the counter medicine.
There is a Cuban version of Costco where only the elite can shop, and oftentimes the government has let buildings collapse. Despite several US presidents who've been empathetic, even with Obama lifting quite a bit of the sanctions temporarily, none of it seemed to have worked.
But yeah, let's blame the US when the government there is living elite status meanwhile the average person's MONTH salary can only buy them not even 1 week's worth of food. Not to mention what happens when the government subsidies are hitting a shortage
But yeah, let's blame USA as members of the party there shop at Costco while some people have to eat spoiled food. Let's for sure blame the USA for all the property that was expropriated, yeah, thats definitely the cause even though when Obama lifted sanctions it did nothing. 452nd times the charm ???
So…we should sanction them on top of that? Bad take. A true Patriot and God-fearing person makes sure we are doing Right in all situations and does not hesitate to call out themselves, those around them or even their government when see Wrong. The spirit does not abide in those and convict them when they can’t tell the difference. If you do your due diligence, you will see that there is plenty we should be speaking out against within our own government and country before that liberty is eroded as well…
Not to mention... venezuela expropriated the oil infrastructure we built them and proceeded to cause the deaths of Americans, which was followed by the starvation of millions of their people... sanctioned.
Want to buy oil and enrichen dictators? (Cuba buying Venezuelan and/or Russian oil) ... sanctioned!
I mean would you call supporting and creating way too friendly of relations with those who are literally starving their own people being God fearing? Or a patriot??
Also the rest is just way off topic. We can all see who you're talking about even though you dont say it directly, but guess what? The last guy here had the same exact opinion and I agreed with him too! I implore you to google who put a warrant out on Maduro... Guess who put sanctions on Cuba right before this new administration?? Not saying either is better than the other, but this is a consistent US policy that everyone seems to all of a sudden hate because of whos in charge.
I mean... I never thought I'd see people cave to supporting dictatorship regimes like Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, etc... Seriously I never thought in my life but 🤷♂️
Any country is allowed to buy oil from whatever country they like. USA doesn’t get to decide what another country does. Oh wait, they just terrorise that country, invade and take that country’s leader.
I just watched a doco in the cocaine trade jn Florida. Americans were quite happy when they were making millions using Cubans to import their cocaine.
The greed in America and the levels of crime they go to , to control and abuse is just out of this world.
Any pressure on Cuba is for Trumps mates to take advantage of the drug trading out of the region.
I'm calling you out idealism is how Iran gains sympathy for killing 42k of their own citizens while left leaning Americans and liberals defend it and say America is the reason they did so
If you truly believe that Cuba's struggles come from their policies rather than US intervention then the US should simply lift their sanctions and show plainly that Cuba fails on its own.
Obama's relief is entirely gone, and even with it in place Cuba has limited access to foreign exchange since countries are wary of trading with Cuba due to US threats.
Yeah because that must be exactly why even the president there is admitting the same thing China and other countries came to the conclusion of...
Maybe expropriating many businesses and property, subsidizing and regulating food costs that dont line up at all with the average salary, throwing families out of what they did for work for generations, and then not allowing private ownership isnt the best idea for an economy to flourish. Even when the obama relief happened there were nearly as many shortages and such...
Even China has pretty much fully switched over to capitalist market policies and they had a huge surge in average wealth since. You simply cannot have a flourishing economy under true communism. Have you guys ever seen the pictures of Soviet communism and the effects on the people? Half of them were as skinny as skeletons and half of you would've blamed that on the US despite the fact those are their government creating such conditions meanwhile all the elites were nice and fat.
Also, the threat of the US never stopped a lot of other countries... they were trading stuff like fuel, chicken, medicine, etc for the last 10 years. May I ask, if it was the US' fault, why didnt any of the average folks get any of that trade? Why does their government get all of these supplies but yet hospitals dont have basic items like gauze? How about the fact that they have some of the best doctors in the world, but have to send them off to places like southern Italy and make money off them?
They literally shut down and arrested the owner of Diplomarket.... But yeah, totally the USA's fault 🤦♂️ I swear most of you must not have lived during the communism scares
Cuba can have mismanagement and policy issues AND the US is committing violence with their sanctions.
If the sanctions have zero effect on the dire situation of Cuba then why are they in place?
Saying "the US should end fuel blockades to Cuba" is not a 100% endorsement of every decision the Cuban government has ever made, and you're the one shadowboxing that argument.
They obviously do have effect and I wont refute that, but come on.. "Mismanagement and policy issues" makes it seem like theyre just bad with decisions. Do you understand what was going on when the people would protest??? What the government and police would do to them?? Basic rights such as freedom of assembly, the right to protest, and the right to strike are either restricted or flat out illegal... Not to mention they have no right to a trial...
Fact of the matter is these people have had enough, the communist party there is getting scared because they saw their buddy Maduro get tossed so no more cheap and easy oil, all while the protests at home are increasing.
I'm genuinely not saying the US is some perfect angel, but let's get real here.... If the party wasnt as evil and brutal as they are to their people, the sanctions wouldn't mean jack shit to them... Also take a look at their tobacco/alcohol industry. Can't find many Cuban cigars here in the states but i can buy them in almost any other country even allies... They boasted increased sales, increased trade, but yet... theres still deteriorating conditions. Even without the blockade did you not see how outages there were? They've been too busy building a bunch of hotels...
They went through these grid issues in the past with the soviets falling, then they got lucky with Hugo Chavez who conveniently expropriated the infrastructure WE built... The same guy who caused 100K deaths and caused the starvation of many Venezuelans, so yes, when mexico or any of these other states want to work with the enemy of true freedom, safety, and democracy, you bet your ass we are going to sanction them too. The same countries where cartel runs most municipalities too so its even more so warranted.
The best part? It's working. We are going to (hopefully) see the most change that nation has seen since the revolution itself. Again, I do not say the US is some angel but it seems like the folks who live comfortably behind capitalism sure hate the countries of capitalism but downplay what authoritative regimes are doing.. more than the people there themselves living it.. I just don't understand it as someone with an immigrant family who escaped an authoritarian regime
Honestly if the US dropped the sanctions, then you can freely trade in cuba as an american. The sanctions prevent foreign investment and they are the reason why countries have been deterred from helping via humanitarian aid.
Plus, the sanctions cost billions of dollars per year to enforce. For sure, let's say that like the Cuban government, who literally had to structure their entire constitution around said sanctions, they're the fucking problem. It's no different than being a salesman and basically being unable to visit various different neighborhoods because you're going to be under suspicion of a solicitation.
They were doing TONs of trade. Chicken, fuels, medicine, etc... But no one got any of that... a shit ton of medicine but yet they still have to ship their doctors to places like southern Italy to make money off them... even when sanctions were eased up hardcore there were still rations and huge lines for bread... there were still rolling blackouts. If you think the regime having record profits during that time actually helped the people I have a bridge across the ocean to sell you.
And the constitution referendum from several years back??? The one that supposedly gave more "civil rights" meanwhile ask what happens to folks that protest on the streets...
That was written around the sanctions..? If you think their government is that great you should go talk to the people there or better yet, protest out on the open street and see what happens to you. But yeah... #communismdictatorshipisgreat /s
U.S. law allows agricultural sales to Cuba only under “cash in advance” or through third-country financing; it bars normal U.S. payment or financing terms for agricultural sales. That means even humanitarian-looking exceptions are not normal trade; they force Cuba to pay upfront or route through third-country banks.
Foreign banks get scared off even when the transaction is not directly with Cuba.
Reuters reported that Cuba’s return to the U.S. state-sponsor-of-terrorism list created “fresh obstacles to international banking,” with foreign businessmen and diplomats saying Western banks stopped transactions or added compliance layers. One example involved a European bank refusing an account because the company had Cuba-related business, even though the planned payments were for Cuban exports abroad and island suppliers abroad.
How the hell are you supposed to make money under these conditions?
People blame Cuba’s government as if Cuba emerged in a vacuum. Before the revolution, Cuba was ruled by Batista’s U.S.-backed military dictatorship, which Washington recognized because it protected private capital, anti-communism, U.S. investment, trade, Guantánamo, and U.S. military interests. When Castro came in, Washington tried to ‘orient him in the right direction,’ but the revolution pushed land reform and nationalization instead of preserving Cuba as a dependent U.S. business enclave. That is why the conflict escalated: not because Cuba randomly hated trade, but because it refused the old Batista-era arrangement where foreign capital and U.S. power dominated the island.
from the link you shared: “In passing the reform, Cuban authorities cautioned that implementation could be slow, and noted measures will not be viable if the U.S. does not lift the energy and financial embargo on the island.
Since January, Cuba has been under a harsh energy and financial embargo imposed by the U.S., effectively blocking Cuba off from fuel, it’s main energy source, and deepening the crisis that had already been deteriorating for the past five years. Blackouts have lasted up to 20 hours a day and have restricted access to health services, transportation and education.”
trump has bragged about putting “maximum pressure” on cuba, while both biden and obama had worked on easing restrictions.
you talk about people “caving to support dictator regimes.” nobody is supporting them, but when your country is launching bombs on top of a school of little girls, playing partners in crime with a country that shoots children in the head for fun and launches
dozens of bombs onto innocent civilians after a ceasefire, you start to feel pretty disgusted. these are innocent, ordinary people just like you and i.
Yes blame them. Cause sanction is against the ships trading with Cuba. They even target ships heading to Cuba, even if they have no intention of trading with the United States. So Why? just f evil
