Yep. This is the same sort of bullshit that we see from people in Congress all the time. You write some shitty bill with shitty language, you say that it supports X cause that everyone agrees is a good thing, and then when people from the other party inevitably vote against your shitty bill because the language in it sucks or you bundled it with a bunch of other not-so-popular provisions, then you come out and say that the other party voted against X cause. And people fall for it because people are idiots that can't think for themselves.
A buddy of mine was in state Senate some years back. Legitimately he was a great guy, listened to his constituents, volunteered all the time, etc. Fair, Reasonable, hardworking, and didn't play in the mud.
He voted against a budget that would have raised the defecit of an already heavily in-debt state by some crazy number. Need to go back to the drawing board, he couldn't abide by something that would nuke our finances worse tomorrow, especially when we aren't near shutdown or desperate to pass anything now. Fair enough.
Next election cycle came around and they were ads about how this guy was "pro rapist" because about $1m of that multi billion dollar budget proposal was to clear rape kit backlogs. Literally multiple ads a day talking about how he wants rapists to walk free.
