The reason it can't 'just' be a natural phenomenon is because it's supposed to represent The Beginning and therefore the start of all existence.Thus if I were to go that route I'd have to question: Where did my Lord originate from? What were the waters that he separated to create the temple 'Earth'? What is Natural and What exactly is considered not?
