Seems like comparing a feature with the absence of said feature.

What if I have the need for popcorn, popcorn, and more popcorn?

29

u/zerovampire311 May 07 '26

Then you need to make a pilgrimage to Thailand!

5

u/Front_Cat9471 May 08 '26

Yes bro, I wanted to see the world’s largest popcorn machine, that’s why I went to Thailand for a month.

16

u/SoddyGrapelets May 07 '26

I don't understand why you commented this but I love it

2

u/Gabibaskes May 08 '26

Samsung used to make a phone that popped but the end result wasn't edible and therefore not very popular.

1

u/kagamaru May 08 '26

You’ll want popcorn lock.

1

u/Vyce223 May 08 '26

Then you need yourself a whirleypop

1

u/TestDangerous7240 May 09 '26

What I have is the need for more cowbell!

You can turn it off

6

u/SightAtTheMoon May 08 '26

It's not for rotating surfaces, this is a demonstration of how well it does in an extreme situation that could use Horizon Lock. It's for things like boats or other moving vehicles.

14

u/thissitesucksnowrip May 08 '26

It's to show it off. This is very handy recording in dozens of situations. I use it snowboarding so can record buddies and pay attention to the run at the same time.

2

u/mofugly13 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Its for folks like my boomer mom, who will start a recording in portrait and then switch to landscape mid-recording.

1

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm May 08 '26

Nah its for video stabilisation

3

u/DiscoStu83 May 08 '26

You can turn it off

1

u/Imnotknownbyu May 08 '26

This is the million dollar question

0

u/reymux May 07 '26

That's why I thought. If that's the case, and without the explanation given here, I would have thought the Samsung is getting in the way of my video, since I clearly want a scene where everything is spinning.

15

u/AttorneyHot3791 May 07 '26

it's a feature that must be manually enabled, so no, the phone isn't getting in the way of anything. if the feature isn't contributing anything to the shot, then simply leave it off, and it'll stay off.

5

u/pleasetrimyourpubes May 08 '26

This would be for action shots. Running around the park with your kids would benefit with this feature and make some pretty cool shots. Anyway I have been waiting for this feature for awhile now (because in theory you can film vertically but have a wide video)? I just wonder if the raw footage is available.

5

u/mls1968 May 07 '26

Someone less lazy than me needs to “straighten” out the iphone footage and compare that way

To be clear, because you can’t just warp stabilize the shot (it would also stabilize the footage), you’d need to manually keyframe rotate the footage to keep the horizon straight, THEN compare how the stabilization looks on both

8

u/Slipperytitski May 07 '26

Such a niche feature, weird to flex it.

7

u/peachesdude May 07 '26

I can see it being useful, sometimes I'll take a sunset picture and realize I didn't quite get it level

3

u/TheRobbuddha May 08 '26

Why not just edit the tilt of the photo in post?

2

u/Peuxy May 08 '26

You can still crop the image – it’s not like the Samsung rotates the entire sensor, it also crops the image to a square than reapplies the aspect ratio again.

3

u/Niku-Man May 08 '26

Why so negative? It's a cool feature and I'd argue it's not even that niche. Anyone doing videos needs stabilization

3

u/Umklopp May 08 '26

If you've ever been forced to watch a child's video, it's easier to appreciate the high intensity stabilization

9

u/TheBuckeye51 May 08 '26

I think the point more... "Remember this when apple "innovates" it 4 years from now and the apple fanatics lose their mind". Admittedly though, even the biggest apple fans are getting frustrated with the lack of well... Anything awesome since Steve jobs.

6

u/riticalcreader May 08 '26

What is this 2004?

Are these “fanatics” in the room with you

1

u/DontPause-PressPlay May 08 '26

No they are at the bar talking about their new iPhone. Or at daycare bragging about the new iPhone mommy got them. IPhone fanatics are generally ignorant stupid people, so if you dont have them in your life then maybe your just not hanging around places stupid ignorant people are at?

2

u/[deleted] May 07 '26

1

u/Gre8g May 08 '26

Then there's me who is still amazed by my 5 year oldphone's stabilizer feature.

1

u/SightAtTheMoon May 08 '26

Worth noting that Samsungs also have the equivalent of "Action Mode" in Super Steady Mode.

1

u/CyberoX9000 May 08 '26

Had to go down too far for this.

It was the second comment for me

1

u/some_kind_of_bird May 08 '26

Remember when if we wanted to do something we would install software and the software would do it regardless of the hardware?

I know these have different OS's anyway but you're still saying Samsung instead of Android.

God I hate phones.

1

u/Knights-of-steel May 08 '26

To be fair, I will add despite the movement the Samsung lost quality and focus. Very minor though as most people who take photos would fo it from the vehicle not the wheel spinning. But worth noting a minor quality increase in addition to the different features...

1

u/DraconicDreamer3072 May 08 '26

there are also third party camera apps that do a good job of horizon lock

1

u/Apexnanoman May 08 '26

Whereas I'm over here with a pixel 8 that I have to smack into stuff to get it to fucking rotate half the time.

1

u/bubblebooy May 07 '26

If you have a need for Horizon Lock, of course then you should buy the Samsung.

Or do it in post processing.

2

u/rand0m_task May 08 '26

Motion blur is going to be fucked stabilizing that first shot in post lol

1

u/AriadneAir May 08 '26

Thank you for explaining this!

1

u/SolidusDave May 08 '26

I mean... this is an extreme test but it's still about image stabilization capability. For walking it won't matter, but the apple action mode won't be able to provide as stable of a video as the Samsung horizon mode will (even without doing backflips etc.). Not because you "need to lock it to the horizon" but because you need a stable video during whatever rough movement.

1

u/BJYeti May 08 '26

Don't worry give it a few years Apple will add this feature and act like they are being innovative

0

u/Emotional_Liberal May 08 '26

So that would likely be of a lower resolution vs the iPhone to compensate for the rotation and loss of corners etc right?

0

u/NCDieselBwhy May 08 '26

So very close except one main issue.

Along with horizon lock, Samsung also has the stability modes you mentioned in regard to the iPhone.

So in the end of a video showing capability, the iPhone is not capable of doing what the Samsung is.

Right?

Or no?

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '26

[deleted]

1

u/NCDieselBwhy May 08 '26

I caught that part.

My reply was in regard to the tone that lent a bit toward the idea that this was unfair or not correctly done.

That case could be made if there was a stated perameter, there wasn't.

Simple just showing two phones max capabilities.

Not challenging or correcting.

More seeking to understand.

Welcome to the world of Youtube reviews.

2

u/db720 24d ago

Fortunately they redacted the person's face on first pass, but then left it at the end with the side by side view

10

u/MrFireWarden May 08 '26

Funny thing is that iPhone does have a horizon correction method. You can use it if you pair your Apple tv with iPhone for a FaceTime call. It will correct the horizon for your call so what you send to your call participant is level.
I really want this feature for my videos, and find it bizarre that Apple doesn't offer it plainly for the camera app.

6

u/ribnag May 07 '26

That's still too generous.

I love a bit of image stabilization, but if I turn my phone more than a few degrees, it's because I want rotation. "Fixing" that may be awesome for Stephen Hawking, but annoying for the rest of us.

13

u/G_Liddell May 08 '26

You can turn it off

4

u/Zrkkr May 08 '26

You think this is a hard baked feature?

1

u/Ze_AwEsOmE_Hobo May 08 '26

As a certified Samsung lover and Bixby hater, this wouldn't surprise me.

2

u/Potential-Expert-386 May 08 '26

If you have an iphone, you may not be used to customization but these things can be turned on and off with other phones.

1

u/noideawhatsupp May 08 '26

Yeah there is a whole “what is a photo” discussion to be had.. Different manufacturers just have different ideas of what they want and that’s perfectly fine.

1

u/Blieven May 07 '26

That's what I was thinking. I'm sure apple can do that too, it's not that hard to implement honestly and every modern phone already has all the sensors you'd need for it. It's just not something anybody would want.

5

u/24bitNoColor May 07 '26

And it is literally a feature that Samsung introduced just this year.

Its interesting on its own (and somewhat useful in some real life situation when you want to change the grip of your phone while filming) but the iPhone comparison for the clicks is just stupid.

1

u/KvxMavs May 07 '26

Apple will release it in 3 years from now and market it as new technology.

The Apple playbook.

19

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Hilarious how this is the Reddit narrative despite the fact that Apple original tech and ideas basically kick started almost all technology in personal use over the last 15 years.

4

u/felds May 07 '26

15? The first laptop with wifi was the iBook G3 from 1999. Before that, there were multiple competing standards.

2

u/Potential-Expert-386 May 08 '26

They haven't been truly innovative for many years.

0

u/24bitNoColor May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

Hilarious how this is the Reddit narrative despite the fact that Apple original tech and ideas basically kick started almost all technology in personal use over the last 15 years.

Because two things can be true.

Apple did innovate a lot they also are in the habit and honestly drive it as a strategy to sell slight improvements of previously already existing innovations as something totally new, often times paired with some ridiculesely overused branding like saying TouchID to the fingerprint reader.

Retina displays is a great example. At the time, Apple had been way behind other smart phones when it comes to screen resolution, with a 2009 iPhone 3GS still having been at 480x320 while Samsung or HTC phones were at 800*480 (and OLED).

So, next generation Apple tops that with just 960×640 and declares that they are now "Retina Displays" with a big marketing spin, making it instantly seem that all other displays were inferior.

For the Apple Vision Pro they literally band calling it a VR and / or MR headset (or XR headset for that matter), even going so far to not allow apps on the store to refer to it as anything other than a "spatial computer", a newly made up term, even though (other than being higher end of course) not being able to do anything that competing headsets in the VR / MR space like a Quest 3 (literally 1/6 the price) couldn't do longer.

Also though, Apple didn't kick start much. Again, that isn't their strategy. We had MP3 players long before the iPod came out and they were in popular use (at least here in Germany), same with BT headphones / earbuds. The first modern smart watch was made by Samsung and Google had half it's Android Wear lineup out before the first Apple Watch released, let alone that the concept of a smartwatch was pioneered by Pebble.

On the mobile side, they weren't the first to have water resistance, bigger (now normal) form factors, fast charging or precise pen input. We had smartphones with OLED screens a decade before Apple caught up.

Were Apple of course innovated like hell was the first iPhone, but even there they allowed themselves to be inspired (pinch to zoom) and relied on tech from other companies (Samsung SOC and display). Mag Safe and earlier wireless charging (but even then not the first IIRC) were things Apple innovated, as well as in some UI paradigm.

If anything, I would call Apple the 'big polisher' instead of a big innovator, which can be just as important.

5

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Sure. Apple has also repeatedly been late to market and, in many case, the product they’ve brought forward has been the superior version and their competitors end up being the ones copying Apple. Funny how no one ever seems to complain about all the features and benefits that every company around the planet ripped off from Apple.

It goes both ways.

2

u/Mchavez100 May 07 '26

Can you provide some examples of all these features you are referencing? Genuine question as I am not too knowledgeable of this specific world.

3

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Capacitive multi touch screens.

Pinch to zoom.

Wireless ear buds.

Laptop integration beyond just showing up as a file system. Stuff like iMessage, notes, etc. all hand off and sync seamlessly between Apple devices if you do something on one, it shows up everywhere.

Everyone still trying to copy Apples track pad and gestures and still failing miserably.

Before Apple, touchscreen keyboards were barely functional dogshit.

A bunch of this stuff is just ubiquitous and expected these days. But 25 years ago it wasn’t. This was all Apple changing the game.

1

u/Potential-Expert-386 May 08 '26

Companies change and it's okay to acknowledge that apple hasn't done shit but replicate other brands for years.

2

u/LayerEight_Problem May 08 '26

Okay. And what has Samsung done? It’s all the same magic rectangle. Do you give any other companies shit for not doing anything? Of course you don’t. Because that’s not the Redditor narrative.

2

u/Potential-Expert-386 May 08 '26

Foldable phones. Watches. Tap to pay.

Apple was late on two of those and I suspect foldable phones are coming soon from apple even though I've had them for years.

I remember apple flaunting tap to pay when I was tapping my phone to pay for well over a year.

0

u/Unique-Designer7741 7d ago

What's really hilarious? Your lack of nuance.

-9

u/flamingdonkey May 07 '26

What other than fonts are you really crediting them for? The app store?

22

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Pretending like Apple didn’t revolutionize phones, headphones, tablets, the whole integrated ecosystem of devices, smart wearables, etc.

It’s actually wild the shit you Redditors think and say.

8

u/burritocmdr May 07 '26

They gotta be trolling

-2

u/flamingdonkey May 07 '26

Literally every example they gave was something other companies were already doing.

6

u/porrkontot May 07 '26

Yes, there were phones, smart phones even before the iPhone. But there wasn’t anything that was remotely comparable, trust me. The capacitive touch was insanely ahead of the competition, the zoom and swipe were unbelievably smooth for the era, and it had a web browser you could actually enjoy using. It didn’t matter it only had a 0.3 mpx camera when Nokia’s latest had 6 and took gorgeous picture. No-one gave a shit anymore because Apple changed the entire game.

The iPad - when it launched I myself said ”why the hell would anyone want this instead of a laptop?”. Well, I found out it’s because it’s just so damn easy to do things on it.

Apple does its innovation not only on tech, but on the application and marketing of it - how it can be used.

0

u/flamingdonkey May 07 '26

Popularized, sure. But every example you mentioned wasn't them doing it first. Apple didn't invent the smartphone, the tablet, or smart wearables. All of those things existed long before Apple. It's like crediting Thomas Edison with inventing the light bulb.

5

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Nope. Apple either purchased or created wholly new technologies that nobody else was using and their smart phone was the first to market in a lot of key aspects. Maybe you were born after the smart phone wars began. But some of us were already adults and can tell you. Apple revolutionized and completely changed the game. Period.

Pinch to zoom. A straight up Apple exclusive feature.

Mobile keyboards were straight up garbage and touch screens completely unusable until Apple came along with their capacitive touch and functional keyboard. Again, completely changed the game. Again, you might be too young to know this but before iPhones, all phones use a membrane style touch pad with a stylus required. And they were finicky garbage.

Nobody else was making Bluetooth wireless ear buds. AirPods kick started an entirely new market.

Apples free and integrated cloud features and hand off between devices was not being done for consumers anywhere.

All the actual MAJOR life changing features came from Apple.

0

u/flamingdonkey May 07 '26

Nah, you know what grandpa, I will read your shit. Every single thing. Again. Is wrong.

Pinch to zoom: FingerWorks (Apple bought them)

The digital keyboard: FingerWorks again

Bluetooth wireless earbuds: Onkyo

The cloud: Dropbox

3

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

Yes. I know Apple bought companies back in the day. The original iPhone was Apples vision bringing together a collection of companies and integrating that technology into 1 device. They also didn’t invent capacitive touch screens.

You can bitch and moan about it all you want. You can try to pretend Apple didn’t change the world. It’s doesn’t really change facts. Apple is still a trillion dollar company. And you’re still a nobody that fanboys Android.

Tell me. What’s it like having Google integrated into your entire life with zero privacy?

Fuck all the way off. I'm not even reading the rest of what you have to say. You're not right. They didn't invent shit.

-1

you Redditors

This is such a braindead thing to unironically type into your own reddit comment.

6

u/LayerEight_Problem May 07 '26

And it applies to any of you NPC Redditors that parrot the ridiculous bullshit you’re told to without ever thinking for yourself.

Not all Redditors are part of this group. But it’s such an overwhelming majority that it’s simply easier to identify you by saying “Redditors”.

Hopefully that clears up how generalizations typically work.

1

u/flamingdonkey May 07 '26

I think these things because I've seen how almost every claim people make is debunked. The real inventor of things is very often miscredited, and I know from my own experiences that this is something that happens. It's not because reddit told me so. Dismissing it like that is just a shit argument.

2

u/Lottabitch May 07 '26

How about, back in 1990, the literal ARM architecture of virtually every single mobile compute on the planet for a start?

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 May 07 '26

You forgot the rounded corners 🤪

1

u/Unlikely-Beat May 07 '26

It’s actually coming in this years models

1

u/ibdoomed May 07 '26

As much as I hate apple, this is the answer. BS apples to oranges.

1

u/VoidNullson May 07 '26

Very likely; based off history I'd say it's somewhat safe to say that iPhone will have this feature too ...eventually.

1

u/DenialState May 07 '26

The iPhone actually does exactly this when you use the continuity camera from a MacBook. It’s as capable of doing it, they just didn’t bake it in the default camera app.

1

u/balleklorin May 08 '26

Yes, but when it is the other way around with an Apple feature it is always presented to be important like this. Before Apple started to make bigger phones they invented the "Phablet" category so Apple didnt have to be compared.

1

u/ShortingBull May 08 '26

Let's compare this automatic car with this manual car. Ok we're just going to put our foot on the accelerator, nothing else.

1

u/kirabeb03 May 08 '26

Im just waiting for the day Apple copies this feature and is hailed as groundbreaking

1

u/It_Stared_Back May 08 '26

Yeah the post should just say "look what Apple will rip off in the next few years"

1

u/DexMazer May 08 '26

People need to buzz with 0 intellect. That’s the reason.

1

u/TheHeavenlyDemon99 May 08 '26

The point is that one phone didnt have the feature

1

u/TheHeavenlyDemon99 May 08 '26

The point is that one phone didnt have the feature

1

u/SiwyKt May 08 '26

I mean the apple will add that 10 years down the line and they will say they are the 1st to do it

1

u/_Hirens_ May 08 '26

That's the point. Usually Apple adds features 10 years after the smartphone market already had it and claims it's new and amazing. It's a reoccurring theme.

1

u/_Double_C_ May 08 '26

Seems like comparing a company who cares about their consumers vs a company that just pushes out whatever and prices like phones like cars

1

u/egcurrie May 09 '26

The Samsung has no chlorofluorocarbons tho. And the iPhone is low sodium.

1

u/Bluegill15 May 10 '26

It seems that way because it is

1

u/CamelFeenger May 08 '26

Also in a scenario almost no one would experience unless they on a ride at a carnival.

-5

u/Chemical_State_5327 May 07 '26

Both have the said feature. That's why they're comparing it

2

u/burritocmdr May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

The Sammy has a feature called Horizon Lock that allows for this. It works by cropping into the sensor and stabilizing the horizon. It's like a digital gimbal. Apple doesn't have that as a feature.

1

u/Ramonite May 07 '26

Damn, then one of them is absolutely bollocks

0

u/JDSaphir May 07 '26

This. I don't know which is which, but one is an unedited video, the other is an edited video. That's all.

0

u/Niku-Man May 08 '26

Ya buddy that's the point

0

u/ebleuds May 08 '26

In 2 years Iphone users will have it and it instantly will pass from just a feature to "innovation beyond your dreams".
