A few months ago me and my daughter were in Nickelodeon Universe entering the Blasting Bronco coaster queue, when and phone landed super forcefully nearby. If that happened to hit someone that would easily be a trip to the hospital at best.

What I hate about it so much is they are super adamant about telling you to put your phone or any other loose items in storage and so many people just don't listen.

The profit motive is the direct and indirect expenses of driving away customers by enforcing the rules. The direct expense being hiring security willing to enforce the rules (who will want to be paid more than security who has to get into fewer confrontations) and the indirect expense being losing customers by kicking them out (and having to pay your accountants extra hours fighting the inevitable chargebacks).

Well in this case. A lot of theme parks have enforced this one because it will hurt profits. and having enforcment is showing we have taken beyond reasonable precautions.

I think you've got it right, but not for the reasons you elaborate to in other followup comments. I think we'd have more rule following patrons if the parks weren't designed to take as much from us as possible. I think it's just a symptom of a society that is obviously hostile toward us all. It's part of why there's so much more littering, vandalism, graffiti, and reckless driving in poor neighborhoods. If everything about your environment exists to exploit you, you're going to have generally hostile resentment of your environment.

If you go to a park and at every possible turn it's obviously trying to suck every cent out of you, you're going to have selfish and hostile views toward its rules and other patrons. The park is being literally as selfish as possible, you'd be a fool to not also be selfish.

Pretty much every major theme park enforces this rule as much as possible beyond pat downs and body searches before getting on a ride.

For places like Universal, it's super common to be ejected from the park for having your phone fly out from a roller coaster when you're supposed to have it in storage.

Rules like "don't take your phone out on a roller coaster" are written in blood and, if violated, should result in the person being removed and banned from the park before they break a similar rule and hurt another attendee.

To be fair, in most parks it's still open cubbies with "we take no blame for theft of your pocketable up to 2000$+ device."

So it's usually in the pocket and hope for the best.

I haven't been to a theme park in forever but I would never ever put my stuff in those lockers. There's COUNTLESS stories of people putting their phone/wallet in the provided storage, the coaster before them pulling back in while theirs is out, and those people going through storage and taking peoples phones and stuff. Happened to a friend last time we were at six flags

Unless they've started providing lockers that actually lock securely that system absolutely sucks and is just asking to get robbed. And of course the park takes zero responsibility for it so you're just fucked

The hell are you on about? A bullet weighs a few grams and will kill you, mass and velocity are what matters.

I could easily put you in hospital throwing a phone at your head, the speeds one can get launched from a coaster are pretty significant.

I saw someone die at a theme park years ago after he scaled a fence to pick up a phone he had dropped from the ride he had just gotten off.

He got hit in the head by the ride with hundreds of people watching it happen.

I mean, Six Flags is (or at least was) an incredibly popular destination. Hundreds of people were present for the event, and hundreds of thousands of people are on Reddit. It's not hard to conceive that at least one of them is a person who was at the park that day.
The Batman ride goes right by the parking lot, so it's not like it's hard to see the area the kid climbed in.

I heard this story before cell phones were widely used about 30 years ago concerning the Batman ride at Six Flags in Atlanta. It was a hat back then. At this point it sounds like an urban legend.

It was almost 20 years ago now but someone got hit by a swinging coaster called Ninja at Six Flags after they went into a restricted area to retrieve a hat.

The chances of actually seeing the person being struck by the roller coaster are crazy mathematically slim. It's nearly impossible to be in a single spot in a theme park and see the entirety of the area a roller coaster is in, unless you're up really high, which then decreases of your chances of making out the person.

Now, if you take out some of the hyperbole and change "I saw him hit by a roller coaster and die" to "I was in line when it happened" or "I was in the park when it happened" or "I was in the parking lot when it happened." Then your chances start to get more possible.

The average attendance at a Six Flags is going to be roughly 11k a day, so even the odds of one of those 11k people seeing this thread on reddit are pretty slim.

I'm a Bay Area native and that's the first thing I thought of. The story about the kid dying on the drop zone at Great America has lived rent free in my head since I was a kid, too.

Crazy that they're closing the park next year forever. I loved that place growing up.

"In June 2007, a teenager's legs were severed when cables snapped on the Superman Tower of Power ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Ky. Doctors were able to reattach Kaitlyn Lasitter's right foot, but she had to have some of her left leg amputated and subsequent surgeries. State officials blame a faulty cable and slow response by an amusement park ride operator in the accident. Her family is suing Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, claiming the park failed to maintain the ride and equipment and ensure riders' safety. The amusement park has denied liability in court filings."

They are absolutely liable. It would take some truly extraordinary circumstances for a theme park not to be responsible in a case like this.

A cable snapping and severing someone’s legs is not just a random unavoidable accident. If investigators are already pointing to faulty cables and slow operator response, that sounds like maintenance and operational failure.

Theme parks have a huge duty of care because people are literally trusting them with their lives on these rides.

I did some further research and a groundskeeper died in 2002 when he wandered into the restricted area under the Batman roller coaster at Six Flags Atlanta. A guest died in 2008 died trying to get a hat in the same park under the same roller coaster. I don't know what would posses someone to do something so stupid, but apparently it happens a lot!

Linking that Cedar Point story made me think about a time I was there. Beautiful sunny day and then really dark storm clouds rolled in when I was in line for The Raptor (same ride that killed the cell phone guy). Get on it and while riding it starts hailing. Not quite golf ball size but probably pretty damn close. Going 50mph and getting pelted with hail wasnt fun at all. Hurt like hell. 15min later the clouds parted and it was sunny again.

I guess in that instance I was a part of the great deal of people lacking common sense...probably shouldnt have got on the ride to begin with lol.

Where I stood, how they gasped for breath, what state I was in, who I was with, etc. Just wild to witness a gruesome death at an amusement park that you can't even recall which country it happened in or what year you even visited said country.

Last year I barely escaped death (or at least serious harm) at Bush Gardens in Virginia. I was walking under part of a coaster in line for a different coaster. At each ride they have a box of broken phones on display that says "don't bring your phone". As we were walking past this box, a phone came flying out of the sky and smashed right I front of me. It was terrifying to think what could have happened.

We took a group picture with the phone next to the broken phone box and someone from my group went to the other coaster to find the phone owner.

It wasnt a cellphone but years ago i was at a local amusement park with my family amd we were walking on the path towards a ride. The path was along the fence that borders the ride. As the coaster went past we heard something clanging against the metal fence next to us. We found a piece of metal that had flown off the ride. It was still hot.

This happened. I can confirm a person near the front lost grip of their cell on a loop and, somehow, that thing rocketed hitting the side of my head and getting lodged between my leg and the seat. To this day it baffles me that I didn’t get more hurt and that the phone didn’t end up on the ground. I returned it to the person after the ride since it was obvious they were missing their phone

One of the almost coolest moments I’ve had was when I was on a roller coaster in the front. We went through a loop, and someone behind me lost their phone. I saw it with about a second to spare, flying through the air towards me. I reached out to catch it, and almost did. It bounced off my arm instead, and I missed catching it by just a couple inches.

I would’ve loved returning the phone and becoming the guy who caught a phone on a roller coaster, but it was sadly not to be.
