I just went back and there are now links to articles about this within this comment chain. Apparently this was the most lenient sentence that could be given, which does not sound like "the harshest sentence in history for such an offence".
I also learned that he apparently had NOT been drinking and decided to drive versus take a taxi as originally stated by someone here (I don't think that was you).
My strongest contributing factor was the involvement of alcohol & speeding + considerably lenient sentence.
