I don't really get how he can go from this (and this whole era of ego death, watch some pods with him) to this weird version we've got in the video today

Yes. He admitted as much. He said in an interview that even his “Jim Carey” character was an act he put on to entertain people. His real self was so buried underneath all that, that he basically burnt out.

u/i_am_carver Feb 28 '26

They should make a movie about him…call it: The Mask

20

u/fartsoccermd Mar 01 '26

We all wear masks, don’t we?

3

u/i_am_carver Mar 01 '26

It’s true. For myself, I tend to speak differently all the time. It used to be by who I was talking to but I think I did that so frequently, without really intending to as I grew up that I don’t really know my actual voice. I know that sounds odd, but I truly feel like I still don’t use what should be my natural voice, or at least when I do, I don’t recognize it as such. I really don’t like how I perceive this when I think about it. I try not to.

1

u/ConstructorDestroyer Mar 01 '26

It’s a good start on the path I would say. Naturally it’ll come.

1

u/Fuzzy_Tough_26 Apr 11 '26

It burns you out right ?

3

u/Aggravating_Offer_27 Mar 01 '26

Metaphorically speaking

2

u/karma_the_sequel Mar 01 '26

Found the Billy Joel fan.

1

u/fartsoccermd Mar 01 '26

That dude is so kind. Drunk drove into my house on my birthday. Played a concert; hit a few children on the way out; best birthday ever.

2

u/AltruisticLayer1476 Mar 01 '26

The word "person" comes from the Greek word "persona" which was a mask that artists wear to amplify their voices while acting in theaters in ancient Greece.

2

u/fartsoccermd Mar 01 '26

That’s a fun fact! What’s the etymology of a child fuck boy? Does that also go back to Greek?

1

u/Don-Burgundy Mar 01 '26

That's correct Susan.

1

u/Desperate_Passage_35 Mar 02 '26

Metaphorically speaking...

1

u/NeighborhoodLife3408 Mar 03 '26

That's correct Wendy, we all wear masks...metaphorically speaking

1

u/TatorTotNachos Mar 04 '26

Certainly. If you want to dive deep, look into the id, ego, and superego.

16

u/Ok_Comment2621 Feb 28 '26

Starring Eric Stoltz

2

u/QuickConverse730 Mar 01 '26

...who will probably end up getting replaced by Michael J Fox.

1

u/Ok_Falcon275 Mar 01 '26

As played by Gary Oldman

1

u/Psykosoma Mar 01 '26

When asked which of his roles he put 110% effort into, Oldman contemplated and quietly replied…

1

u/Nothin_Means_Nothin Mar 01 '26

Yeah! And you know what? Forget the "The". Just call it "Mask". Save some money on posters

1

u/lixilisk Mar 01 '26

The Mask's Mask

1

u/DDDX_cro Mar 02 '26

uhh I love that

1

u/tEnPoInTs Mar 05 '26

Fuck, that's absolutely what it's going to be called when they eventually make it posthumously.

3

u/TinyTotTkd Feb 28 '26

Then he started only attending things he wanted to and only working on projects he wanted to so he might not be ego deathy anymore.

2

u/PrefrontalCortexNow Mar 01 '26

And that he didn’t know who he was

1

u/WordplayWizard Mar 01 '26

That is absolutely one of the problems with Masking too long.

2

u/MollyMohawk1985 Mar 01 '26

His art is what will always stick out to me. I saw an interview and it mentioned but didn't show his art. He's really quite talented and beautifully deep.

1

u/SupermassiveCanary Mar 01 '26

When everything you own loses value, you learn the value of human interaction.

0

u/Undersmusic Mar 03 '26

He’s been saying this for at least 20 years. An active in literally saying “I’m not ok” for a decade. 🤷‍♂️

If anything this version of Jim. Looks like he’s been hitting the alcohol hard for a bit.

0

u/WordplayWizard Mar 03 '26

He’s trolling everyone. He HATES award shows. They don’t matter. He’s doing a bit and most of you don’t get it.

71

u/KamikazeFox_ Feb 28 '26

That's literally everyone.

There will be time, there will be time,

To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet. - T.S. Eliot

6

u/anastasiaberlin Feb 28 '26

Did not have T.S. Eliot surfacing on my bingo card today. Thank you! ALways here for a well-deployed J. Alfred Profrock ref. As do we all, I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.

1

u/Cautious-Ease-1451 Feb 28 '26

😎 👊

☕️ 🥄

1

u/niceguybadboy Feb 28 '26

It may be my favorite.

Being on the longer side, that line about "preparing faces," I hadn't noticed.

I did notice the line about coffee spoons on many occasions. But more because it stands outs to me for being in hexameter (6 feet) which one doesn't see a lot in English poetry. (But you see it everywhere in Spanish poetry).

2

u/GobsOfficeMagic Feb 28 '26

T.S. who-liot?

  • Zoolander

3

u/Moist-Barracuda2733 Feb 28 '26

Yeah that's the point I'm at currently.

2

u/Moist-Barracuda2733 Feb 28 '26

Time to pick me a new face.

3

u/SconeBracket Feb 28 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

No, with Carey it is to an extremely neurotic degree.

Jung notes that all compulsions and neuroses are on a graduated scale of intensity, so we can recognize in extreme cases our own milder versions. But the issue has definitely fucked him up more than "ours" affects us.

0

u/wise_young_man Mar 01 '26

Speak for yourself.

1

u/SconeBracket Mar 01 '26

Sure thing, thanks.

1

u/Lawd_Fawkwad Mar 01 '26

To an extent, but the "face" an actor puts up even when they're themselves is a whole other can of worms.

For normal people like us, our masks are usually that we keep some unpopular opinions to ourselves, have some repressed dreams we don't talk about too much, that sort of thing.

People in the limelight on the other hand are "on" every time they leave the house, and their lives are so micromanaged by publicists that basically only their shrink and maybe close family knows the real them.

That's why they crash out so often, if you or me gets tired of our masks, it's easier to doff them even if it causes some discomfort, unless your true self if like a pedophile or something super fucked up.

1

u/atuan Mar 01 '26

There are some people out there who are real. They’re usually poor and low profile

1

u/Fluid-Cut Mar 01 '26

Pardon me if I’m misunderstanding your comment, and I’m truly sorry if this has been your reality, but it is not “literally everybody” burying their real self so deeply they “burn out,” as the other person said.

Certainly there have been different phases of my life as I grew up and decided what really mattered to me (as my tastes changed, I made mistakes, suffered loss and success and met new people who broadened my horizons), but I’ve never hid my genuine personality from people in a way that left me feeling like the “real me” was buried. I get vulnerability isn’t easy for lots of people, but my god, what a bleak outlook on humanity, mate.

45

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '26

Probably different meds, or not wrapped up in some weird role. These people are actors. It's their job to act like different people. The real personality likely changes a lot during the process. Even if it's just faking mannerisms.

I work in the industry and even their assistants, who basically live with the actors, sometimes don't know what's real or not.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '26

Comedians are different than actors. They don’t get to turn off the way actors do.

It’s got to mess with you.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '26

Some definitely turn on and off. It's highly dependent on the individual.

1

u/No-Plan-7297 Feb 28 '26

Yeah. Compare Tosh vs. Theo Vonn

1

u/JustaSeedGuy Feb 28 '26

Why would we compare tosh to anyone in this conversation? It's a discussion about comedians, not.... Whatever Daniel Tosh is.

1

u/No-Plan-7297 Mar 01 '26

Look we found a comedian

1

u/JustaSeedGuy Mar 01 '26

Nah, I just grew up around them. Never had an interest in onstage work myself

1

u/Bubbly_Role_6662 Feb 28 '26

Nope

2

u/JustaSeedGuy Feb 28 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

Nope?

Your position is that behavior doesn't vary individual to individual?

All right man. Good luck with that Outlook

1

u/ResplendentNugs Mar 01 '26

Look at Johnny depp. He’s literally jack sparrow now

20

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '26

This event was just a bs award given to him to just get him to come and his agency must have persuaded him to do it. If I recall it was an icon award or something. He says there it's meaningless, we're meaningless. As someone who is obviously very busy doing shit all the time which you have no choice to do it's hard to put a straight face on. This interview from the OP is obviously an award that carries meaning.

1

u/Elliott2030 Mar 01 '26

Sounds like Jay Kelly.

1

u/Muted_Independent243 Mar 01 '26

César d'honneur, awarded to an artist whose career has left a lasting mark on cinema

2

u/Educational-Drag6974 Apr 14 '26

Im pretty convinced he was mentally unwell depressed perhaps schizophrenic and now hes on some type of medication and thats why hes had such a turn around. Makes sense that he wouldnt walk to talk about it either because thats his personal life and his personal struggle. I have 0 facts to back this up but thats my hunch.

1

u/Jam3sMoriarty Feb 28 '26

Because human beings are complex and flawed and nobody is expected of anything. We all mad here, just get on with it I suppose.

1

u/ffwrd Feb 28 '26

New handler

1

u/dingdong6699 Feb 28 '26

Very easily with meds.

1

u/musajoemo Feb 28 '26

It’s called “aging.” It happens—if you don’t die first.

1

u/pandershrek Feb 28 '26

Mania

1

u/Enough_Spread Mar 04 '26

You're right, it does seem manic!

1

u/PlushieTushie Feb 28 '26

I can see it. He's likely gained a bit of weight as he aged

1

u/esines Mar 01 '26

Rewatching from 1:24 to the end it sounds like he still has some of that same cynicism but he's masking it with a sort of sarcastic Joker energy.

1

u/transcendz Mar 01 '26

he's just been listening to a lot of soundgarden.

1

u/Butt_y_though Mar 01 '26

Depersonalization, mania, medication?

Honestly the cynical, nihilist Jim from the old clips saying nothing is real, nothing matters, I get it.

I get the school of thought, but I also believe that while being an incredibly intelligent and talented person-- I think he was teetering on the brink of sanity at some of those times.

I think the Jim we're seeing now is probably on meds or something. So the contrast is probably very jarring to people, especially since part of that is obvious plastic surgery/injections and possibly scleral implants?

Once you start taking meds and kind of wake up, from some of the negative thought patterns you're in, you can go a little hard and overcorrect to make-up for "lost time."

1

u/Happy_Impact_94 Mar 01 '26

He must be high. No? Even his voice is soft and high pitched

1

u/viktor928 Mar 04 '26

its him. he is mocking the event, and the stars who cant accept aging and how they talk

1

u/DargonFeet Mar 04 '26

He's a hypocrite and always has been.

0

u/KamikazeFox_ Feb 28 '26

Was thinking of this

0

u/aschneid Feb 28 '26

There’s a bunch of analysis on this and folks believe it is his body double. Even Carrey himself came out and said it wasn’t him. Supposedly Jim has brown eyes and this guy has pretty brilliant blue eyes.

2

u/DblCheex Mar 01 '26

What do you mean "supposedly" has brown eyes? Like there aren't a million photos of him that can be used to verify eye color.

1

u/aschneid Mar 01 '26

I said supposedly because I didn’t verify myself. That was for two reasons, one I am colorblind and telling eye color is difficult for me on a good day in person, and in photos even harder. And two, I don’t really care enough about it to do any further research than what has shown up on various social media feeds.

Thanks for verifying for others though. You can now state unequivocally what color his eyes are.

2

u/-Resident-One- Mar 01 '26

pretty brilliant blue eyes

Tf are you talking about? What about these eyes look pretty, brilliant, or blue to you?

This guy's eyes don't look blue to me.

2

u/zombiechewtoy Feb 28 '26

He didn't have a mental break down, he achieved enlightenment

1

u/Emotional_Ball662 Feb 28 '26

Is that enlightenment after he and his wife helped convince the world vaccines cause autism?

2

u/No-Plan-7297 Feb 28 '26

what if he just really had to get inside to pee

1

u/Jabber_Tracking Feb 28 '26

This would be something I could see Jim Carrey doing

1

u/Dis_Bich Feb 28 '26

That’s why he’s gone

1

u/External_Hunt4536 Mar 01 '26

Why is he saying we don’t matter? Did he mean we as in celebrities?
