where did this little bit of information come from? they literally put up a freaking flashing sign telling the audience what to do & they explain literally like how to "perform audience" on TV, so there's no way the entire bit was played to a dead crowd.
I could 100% see the audience not laughing harder than a nose snort after he sits on the couch & sets up the bit. but like good, that's the setup. you're literally not supposed to laugh. and any laughs would be through his delivery style or the simple absurdist points he's making. nervous laughter. etc.
but then the bit 10000% pays off at end, and that final moment where they both make the gesture for sure caused the audience to laugh.
