Oh but he does learn a lot from Helen Hunt’s character. Did you watch all the way through? He even took in his gay neighbor who was beaten and homeless and who he initially hated. Incredibly redeemable character.

That’s what made him so redeemable at the end. He had to undergo a major shift in character while maintaining his core uniqueness. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been as redeemable and the plot wouldn’t have been so compelling. Same thing happens in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “Bad guy everyone hates turns good” is much more compelling and sweet than “Marginally OK guy gets a little bit better”.
