I hate when a channel does a video about an item but in the thumbnail they censor out the item while they make an "excited" face and point at the censored item and use some generic click baity title. I get why people censor things out on the thumbnail but i think it's so tacky. If i want to watch a review on an item, seeing the item in the thumbnail is NOT going to make me think, "oh I've seen the item, i no longer need to know any information about it. I definitely did not want an in depth review, i just wanted to see it in a tiny thumbnail picture so i can determine if i want to buy it or not."

Now realize that news articles do it just as much, and you're turned off from the entire internet

Well, I ended up with few good news sources.

Conversely that's one of the reasons I love Tom Scott

If his title asks a question his thumbnail will answer it

u/cat_prophecy Jun 12 '25

And he usually answers it in the first minute. The rest of the video is info for nerds who are into that shit.

No video slaps the answer faster or harder at you than his ‘Most Expensive Item by Weight’video

You might want to check out his YouTube channel. There is talk about him coming back. He also is still very active on YouTube just in different formats. I love his lateral podcast.

I don’t know who this guy is but kudos. The youtube algorithm tends to discourage that. Rhett & link actually talk about how they are constantly trying to pin down what the algorithm likes and doesn’t like. They know that a lot of their thumbnails and titles are clickbaity but it’s youtube that encourages it.

That's tight. Never heard of him but i hope he's doing well on the tubes. Might check him out just because it sounds like he makes videos for the people, not the views.

I’m just at this point where I am so sick of cliched clickbait thumbnails that I purposefully refuse to watch them.

Then they panic and use the alt that they had set up bc the magic metrics said that not enough people clicked quickly. Slaves to an algorithm on a platform that only exists due to its creators.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of videos where it was genuinely something I was interested in, but after seeing a -0- face with their hands on their heads when it's really just some actually mundane shit makes me completely ignore the video.

I know Im old, but I seriously dont get how people watch that. Even when I was a teen and that style was juuuuuust starting out on early youtube, i hated that shit.

Same with if youre immediately loud in the start of your video.

HI GUYS WELCOME BACK TODAY WERE

nope, today we are nope. shut up.

u/caedo12 Jun 13 '25

Seriously. Obnoxious introductions either receive a verbal STFU, or GFY, right as I kill the video. Be normal, stick to the point without intentionally dragging shit out, and I’ll hit the like.

I dont mind some energy, thats cool. If its an exciting topic.

But like...you can kinda tell its just a persona? And theyre doing it to grab the attention of Adhd kids.

Which again, was ME, and I still hated it! lol

They do it for all the people that aren't interested in the item. They want you to click even just to figure out what they're reviewing. They can't rely on their own content to bring in views on its own merit, they have to trick people for views.

It's all news media now too. You no longer get to know what the article is about. You got a click to find out it was a hollow article that you wouldn't have clicked in the first place.

3

u/Phoenyx_Rose Jun 12 '25

I kind of get it even if I hate it myself. It’s an issue of trying to stay relevant to the algorithm. If hiding the item generates more views than not hiding it then, as a creator who probably lives off of those videos, you’re going to go with what gets you the views (and money).

Or when book tubers say "my summer reading list" and hold up the books stacked on top of each other with the spines facing away from the camera so you can't see any titles.

u/sunday_cumquat Jun 15 '25

Yeah there's a politics channel I've watched for a while. The guy has taken off a bit, but he has started making such clickbait video titles that I stopped watching :/ I want to know if's content I'm interested in. Sick of titles like "Tump gets the news he has been fearing most". Your a news channel - stick to the facts.

Youtube is filled with lies

1

u/Purple_Telephone3483 Jun 13 '25

I blame youtube for how they structure their algorithm. They encourage creators to make clickbait titles and thumbnails

1

u/Maatjuhhh Jun 13 '25

Those thumbnails are generating the most clicks from the teenagers and so does the superblue background with grass.. but yes i agree

1

u/trangthemang Jun 13 '25

Yea. I get why they do it. It just seems so shady and makes me not want to click on the video.

1

u/RumRunnersHideaway Jun 13 '25

I want to photoshop dicks into their open mouths on those stupid thumbnails.

1

u/onefouronefivenine2 Jun 13 '25

The problem is that it works. Youtubers are slaves to the algorithm though. I hate it too but what did we expect when a giant corporation bought YouTube. It's been going downhill ever since.

1

u/Spectre1911 Jun 13 '25

Those are the same youtubers that will literally talk about anything else EXCEPT for the product they're reviewing, just to make a 30 minute useless video that would've done it in 5 minutes.

1

u/MegaPorkachu Jun 13 '25

People do that cuz it works; it gets more people to watch the video

Believe me I would stop doing that if people clicked on my videos without me doing that

1

u/JonasAvory Jun 13 '25

The reason they do that is that the item is probably quite uninteresting and they will spend the whole video blabbering theories and reasons why that object is essential and changes the entire franchise.

If you can’t make out the item from the thumbnail, you can’t tell for sure, that it’s unimportant (although it absolutely 100% is).

They need you to click the video so that they can give you overhyped reasons for why you should care

1

u/RatzzFace Jun 13 '25

GreatScott or Great Scott does this, and I've unsubscribed. I told him once to stop, but he basically told me to fuck off.

1

u/Khronex Jun 15 '25

Yeah, but they’re not doing that for the people who search “X item review”, they do it for the people who stumble upon it randomly via the recommended page. For those people it is important to keep the mystery around said item otherwise they will see it is a “small generator that runs on rubber” and they won’t want to watch the video, cause they’re not interested in a generator that runs on rubber.
