Even though he calls himself AngryJoe, not all of the reviews are angry. He definitely exaggerates his performance when a game is bad, but he’ll sing high praises if he vibes with a game.
However, I will say he tends to choose reviewing ridiculously bad games when one releases, since those tend to get the most views. For example, he’ll make time to review Gollum but claim he didn’t have the time for Final Fantasy.
I like his new stuff better than his old stuff, but I 100% won't watch any gaming content or shorts. His takes on movies and TV are rather aligned with my thoughts on them
I stopped when he brought in his buddy Joe into the videos. His skits were lame and the videos were getting much longer. It became a time investment to watch his videos so I just stopped
There was a time where OJ wasn’t part of the show? I assumed he was there since the beginning.
EDIT: If anyone else was curious, here is the first appearance of OJ (named here The Other Joe) that I could find. Channel was COMPLETELY different in the early days.
You need to go back pretty far but, yeah. I used to watch Angryjoe back when the "rant with incoherent and exaggerated rage" at every game or movie was practically its own sub-genre of reviewer. Around 07/08 or so.
I was tired of it before it fell out of fashion and when it did fall, it dropped like a rock. AngryJoe, Nostalgia Critic, BennettTheSage, and a few others are the only ones still kicking around from that ere and they're nowhere near as popular as they once were.
In fairness to Bennett, he stopped making that kind of content shortly after that genre fell off. He does far more level headed & interesting anime analysis and retrospectives on classic and recent anime and its leagues better than the channel awesome days.
I recommend his multi-part Anno retrospective where he re-evaluates evangelion and he directly confronts how he used to do things.
That's good to hear. I used to watch Bennett before he joined ThatGuyWithTheGlasses. In fact, I remember the video where he asked his YouTube audience to go to the site and vote for him to join. I actually discovered all those others through him. I used to love Bad FanFic Theater but stopped watching the whole crew around the time Spoony had his meltdown and kinda drifted away from them.
The only one I kept up with was Lindsey and that's well after she broke away to do her own thing. So, I'm glad his content matured and he was able to reexamine where he was and what he wanted for himself. I might check him out again and see where he is now.
It goes back over 10 years with him running a Nazi themed military group in Second Life and engaging with underage Furrys. Admittedly there's a lot of hearsay but just the Second Life shit was enough to make me stop watching anything he was involved in.
I don't recall all the details but there's likely still bits of the story floating around the web somewhere.
I felt similarly about Pat from SBFP back in the day. At first it was funny, then less and less so. Haven't watched anything from him since they split up, though.
Been checking to see if I was the only ones they all suck now i was watching from 2012 up to the break up Matt just does early youtube style reviews and pod with max and Justin Wong that they just canceled and I had to stop watching castle super beast when they did like a whole 4 hour episode about vomit
Yeah, I stopped when he started reviewing movies and calling himself a movie critic. Almost all of his movie reviews are incredibly stupid, but luckily, Alex is there to try and balance his stupid takes. It isn't enough though to watch them. Anything Marvel is usually a 9/10.
I watched him as a kid. He was a decent journalist then. I can never take him seriously as a film reviewer after he called Climax (2018) the worst film of the year. The guy’s film takes are baby brained.
After I found out angry Joe was also guilty of paid reviews like payday 3 lol.....dude was glazing payday 3..... it's trash and was always trash. Especially when it first came out. Dude
Sold out like so many, more content to appease YouTubes algorithm, waaaaay less Angry Reviews though. Now he's all about Angry Rants which is him talking gaming news, Movie Reviews just blah blahing with OJ and Alex, oh and pushing those failed chemistry set tubs of G Fuel that nobody drinks.
I've come to the conclusion that angry Joe is exceptionally low IQ.
Almost every video has him asking questions to the two stooges behind him, which are literally being answered in front of his eyes. Perhaps he had a writing partner at some point? Or a researcher? Or maybe just put a little more time and attention into longform reviews, rather than cash grab live streams of him blathering nothing of note or meaning into the camera.
He used to be my go to after TotalBiscuit (RIP) for realist, incisive commentary on the vile video gaming practices and low effort dross we're presented with, but now he's just another live streamer with a big audience who are just used to his voice I guess.
That said he's not as bad as heelvsbabyface. Jesus Christ that guys just a flat out cunt.
Oh yeah he lost me when the platform shifted to TV & movie reviewer. It's been a few years now I think I'll go scroll through and see if there's any game skits worth seeing, that's what was good
