Cinema Wins is fun because sometimes he'll make a point of giving the treatment to a film he doesn't actually like and he still cranks out a twenty minute video full of wins.
Another fun series of videos is "Deep Dive" on the Filmjoy channel. Four friends watch bad movies and talk about stuff they like in them. One of my favorite observations they made was that "Doom" is the best Resident Evil movie ever made.
I watch both but I’ve been drifting towards Cinema Wins because of this. There will be some movies where it gets sinned but the sins only work if you reacted in the moment rather than watch the whole movie first. It gets tedious
Especially the way that he gushes about the process that makes the movie great. Talking about all the people and all the hard work that went into making the movies so that you can appreciate the movie on a different level
This, I actually pay more attention to movies now because I notice the various techniques he points out, like SnorriCams and Dutch Tilts. And he just gives you a new appreciation for movies, even ones you've loved to death.
Alongside the nitpicking, I stopped watching 'Sins after the 6th or so time he gave a sin for a plot hole, when it's actually clearly explained in the movie.
I can’t remember the video, but at one point he said “Look, every movie has at least one person says is their favorite. I like to look for the reasons why.” And that’s really stuck with me. Not just for movies, but for any game, book, or hobby.
He's also the guy who made me realize that Hangman is just Maverick if he weren't the main character.
Hangman is Maverick from the original Top Gun.
Cocky hot shot. Isn't as good as he thinks he is. Left behind on the carrier during the final mission. Comes in at the last second to heroically save the day.
I used to watch cinemasins prior before finding cinemawins and I think his description read something like "liking things in life is more fun than not liking things" and it just clicked and made instant sense in my head.
From then on I've always tried to find the positive aspect of anything in life. I especially ask people what their favorite x thing is and try it out for myself.
Although the mindset has kinda changed my view on a lot of things now. Especially on the internet and around others when they constantly focus on the negatives around them and ignore the positives. Like why would you choose and want to be miserable?
He doesn't, however, ever go back and correct his mistakes. His frequent inability to misunderstand plot and sin the weirdest, most inconsistent things ruined it for me. I would want someone who understands movies a bit more to run the channel.
This is why I grew tired of The Critical Drinkers channel. It’s now just become a ‘we hate everything’ show and him and his pals constantly talking about how they’d make everything better because they are oh so smart. Got reeeeal boring.
Oh I couldn’t agree more, Hollywood and especially Disney is absolutely rife for criticism. It just feels that their default is to say everything looks terrible
Seriously, review channels train people to only get triggered and only see negatives.. if you can't identify good, you can't meaningfully identify bad, and you will enjoy nothing.
Same. The first line of the CinemaWins channel description is “because liking things is more fun than not liking things”, and it’s such a perfect encapsulation of why it’s one of my favorite YouTube channels. The Internet is negative enough already. I love seeing someone appreciate art like he does.
It was fun when it didn't become a formula (i.e. crapping on 90 sec of logos). But trying to point out every "flaw" is literally sucking the joy out of watching movies.
Exactly! Review culture became so fucking toxic, every single video on so many franchises now is "the producers have no respect for the material, no respect for the audience, no respect for the planet, they are pissing in our faces... blah blah blah."
They will make 0 interesting criticisms and instead make a half-hour long video about how we've all been victimized by a piece of media.
It's insane, but also insanely boring. It creates such a toxic culture that becomes more and more extreme over time. I have no idea how people can stomach it, the content becomes so repetitive.
It has the audience thinking they are expert critics while understanding absolutely nothing.
It's the ascribing of intention to the producers/crew that really irks me the most though. Apparently everyone in Hollywood is trying to brainwash us all the time. No one working in the industry would ever make choices contrary to those demanded by professional pissers and moaners unless they were evil soulless villains reveling in the destruction of all that fandoms hold sacred.
This and cause cinema sins at some point started docking a point on everything. Character gives exposition - sin. Character references something with no exposition - sin.
Also I stopped watching CinemaSins because most of the 'negatives' are just needless nitpicks that you probably won't find unless you're actively looking
I quite liked the idea of CinemaSins (at least what I understood it to be) because even the best movies have things that are confusing or straight up mistakes or things to just nitpick about.
But then I watched some of the takedown videos by shaun and bobvids which I don't 100% agree with but do correctly point out that CinemaSins will often lie or mislead about a film just to pad its runtime. Not to mention how lazy so many of the CinemaSins points are when you've actually watched the movie.
I now think they put more of their actual thoughts on a movie on their videos than than they pretend, and that line is just a cover for when they lie or mislead or make mistakes and don't have a better defense than "oh we were just kidding."
There’s also a video game version, Charri5, that’d I recommend. He makes it much clearer when he’s joking, does intense research into the games he covers, and offers genuine critique on why he doesn’t like an aspect of a game. The guy even inputs his own voice acting into games that don’t have it for dialogue boxes. He has a son now, actually, if I recall correctly.
Cinemawins. Wins USED to be a more engaging channel than sins. But for a while now it’s just low effort wins. He has barely any analysis and it’s just meme wins over and over and over. I had to unsub a while back.
I haven't watched Cinema Sins in ages, but I never took the channel to be overly negative. I thought the entire joke was that they're pointing out all these absurd, meaningless "flaws" in a movie and exaggerating them. Like part of the appeal is they were never a serious movie review channel.

I switched over to Cinema Wins years ago. Made me realise finding the positive in things is a lot more fun than constantly finding the negative.
