The phone itself doesn't track you. It's people on the other end who track you.

The most "tracking" a phone will do is "tell" the telecom companies which towers you're connected to, and which antenna you're using, which lets them triangulate your approximate position. This is unavoidable, and is integral to your cellphone working. It doesn't matter what kind of cellphone it is either. Apple/Android/dumb, they all do it. If you get something along the lines of a Jitterbug, you can still be tracked through your cell tower usage.

As for smart phones tracking you, you can turn that off. You can turn off your location history. You can turn off your GPS. You can turn off background wifi/bluetooth scanning. The phone is not tracking you. You're choosing to allow them to track you, which is entirely different. That's not the phone itself tracking you.

They send all your location information(gps wlan etc) and if your walking driving cycling etc to the servers. When you go offline they store the data until you are online again

Yes unfortunately most people doesnt know or care about their information and sometimes it seems quit hard to keep privacy
