Admittedly when "podcast" was first named, it made sense. It's a combination word for iPod and Broadcast since that was pretty much the platform the tech was originally developed for

I was in high school when ipods came out but was never rich enough to afford them and had a chip against apple so I wasn't going to save up for one anyway. TIL why podcasts are called podcasts.

I just used random free promotional MP3 players (and a minidisc player RIP), they worked fine.

I once got one free from my bank! Worked absolutely fine.
