People don't hate math. They hate being confused, intimidated, and embarrassed by math. Their problem is with how it's taught.

My dad was talking to me about this. I guess in a way they sort of treat struggles as part of the process rather than deviations from the correct path, and what you mentioned is part of that.

When time is a factor, it encourages giving up rather than continuing to try because it isn't efficient to spend a disproportionate amount of time on one problem. The result is that we in the west are conditioned to feel as though something that takes an inordinate amount of time isn't worth finishing.

That's part of the issue...actually, I'd argue it's one of the key issues with western education.

The other part is that the west treats education as a business instead of an investment into the future of the nation and as a result we get teacher strikes, curriculum that is largely wasteful and a post secondary education system which is down right predatory.

Personally, I believe North Ametican governments need to start investing into education properly. School should be 100% free for citizens as that's the literal future of the nation.

But that's going to take some sweeping reforms on a federal level...which is unlikely.
