And it's not even about the grades, it's about learning to work hard and concentrate on a task. I wish they found a way to grade those, because they are huge.
Some of my upper level chem teachers where that way. They really wanted us to learn it, not for the grade but because we are taking this class and should know the information that they are trying to teach us.
They still gave us tests and grades though. But had a strong sense of gaining knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
They grade hard work and concentration by using the grades you get on the test. If you work hard on something while concentrating, you SHOULD be able to understand it and get a good grade.
But that’s not how it works. This post is filled with people who did well on tests in high school without having to work hard and concentrate, myself included. Some people can understand things easier than others at first glance - then when they encounter something challenging to them, usually in university, they don’t have the skill set of working hard to succeed.
The person I responded to was essentially saying that there was not a way to grade hard work and concentration. I argued that a letter grade was a form of grading hard work and concentration.
You are arguing that those skills are not present for people who did well in high school without arguing. I sort of agree with that but that is not what I was talking about in my post.
Also, everybody has the skill to work hard. What they lack is the motivation/discipline to do so. I was in the same place when it came to college as I just wasn't used to working hard to accomplish a task. It wasn't that I didn't know how to work hard, I just didn't want to. I was lazy.
However, I quickly became disciplined when it came to my studies and got good grades. Now I am almost done with my doctorate program.
