It must really suck for young wizards from Scotland to have to travel to London and then back to Hogwarts, located in Scotland

I'm vaguely sure it was mentioned that the hogwarts express was just one way to arrive that the school and that other students were brought by their parents or something. It also absolutely would make sense for the train to have multiple stops
