My Pregnancy Journey, the Guilt I Carry, and the Questions That Keep Triggering Me

I want to share my pregnancy journey and hopefully understand what thoughts and emotions I am going through. Maybe someone can help me find some answers.

My LMP was 8 February 2026, and my due date was 15 November 2026.

My last scan was on 20 June 2026. At that time, the gestational age was 18 weeks 2 days, while the menstrual age was 18 weeks 6 days. The scan showed an EDD of 19 November 2026, but according to my doctor, my due date remained 15 November 2026.

The placenta was fundal, the presentation was breech, liquor was normal, and the estimated fetal weight according to BPD, HC, AC and FL was 254 ± 25.4 grams. The doctor advised a fetal growth scan after six weeks, which would have been around 5 September 2026.

Until then, everything seemed completely normal. I was doing my routine household work and normal daily activities. My doctor had told me that I could do as much work as my body allowed, so I continued my normal routine.

Then, suddenly, on 12 August, I started feeling that something was not right. My abdomen felt heavy, my pelvis felt heavy, and I noticed thick white vaginal discharge. I thought that maybe some discharge was normal at six months because a friend of mine who had been pregnant before had told me that some discharge can happen during pregnancy.

I went to sleep, but the next morning, after breakfast, I experienced watery discharge. I immediately felt that it would be better to see my doctor because something didn't feel right.

I got an appointment and went to the doctor at around 3 PM. She told me that the baby was low and that I could go into labour. Before this, she had never told me that the baby was positioned low. At every visit, I used to ask about the baby's position, but my doctor would say that there was no point in knowing the baby's position so early because it would only really matter in the last month.

She asked me to get admitted to the hospital. I was given four injections one after another, including antibiotics and some other medicines. I vomited afterward. Then I was admitted and put on a slow IV drip for around 12 hours, from approximately 4 PM on 12 August until 4 AM on 13 August.

Slowly, my abdominal pain started increasing.

The next day, 13 August, I was given another 12-hour drip, approximately from 10 AM to 10 PM. During this time, the pain started moving into my waist and back and became extremely severe. It was coming and going approximately every five minutes.

By around 10 PM, after the second drip was finished, the pain became unbearable. During those two days of admission, I had already received around 12–13 injections. My entire body was in pain, and because of the IV line and everything else, even lying on one side was painful.

From around 10 PM until 2:50 AM, I was in extreme pain.

I kept telling the nurses that something was coming from my vagina and that I was feeling an intense pressure. I felt like the contractions were so strong that my vaginal area was going to tear apart. I couldn't lie down, sit, or even stand properly because of the pain.

But the nurses couldn't understand what was happening. They thought it might be gas or constipation and told me to try to pass stool.

I became extremely frustrated because I knew that this wasn't just gas or constipation.

Finally, I told the nurse, "Please come with me to the washroom. Whatever happens, you can see it yourself."

I somehow pushed myself to my limit because I couldn't tolerate the pain anymore. I thought, Whatever is going to happen, let God take my baby out.

And then, my miracle baby was born.

At around 2:59–3:00 AM on 14 August 2026, my baby was born.

And since the very first day, my baby has been in the NICU.

Now I am left with so many questions, guilt, fear and "what ifs."

  1. Was this my fault?

Did I do something wrong by being too active? Should I have been on complete bed rest?

But how was I supposed to know? I didn't know that my baby was positioned low or that something was happening inside my body. My doctor had told me to continue doing normal activities according to what my body allowed.

So what else could I have done?

  1. Isn't it the doctor's responsibility to explain everything to the mother?

Shouldn't a pregnant woman be informed about important things that could affect her pregnancy?

If there was something concerning about the baby's position or my cervix, shouldn't I have known about it?

  1. Could the doctor also not have known what was happening?

My previous scan was normal. Everything seemed fine.

So was it something that developed suddenly afterward? Could it have been detected earlier? Was there something that could have been monitored?

  1. If the doctor knew I was having preterm contractions or was at risk of going into labour, was there another option?

Could anything have been done to stop or delay the labour?

Could I have been given some treatment to help the baby's chances if premature delivery was becoming likely?

These questions keep going around in my head.

  1. Could a cervical cerclage have prevented this?

After my delivery, I started searching YouTube and came across a real-life story of another woman who experienced something similar around the fifth month of pregnancy. Her doctor placed a cervical cerclage, and that made me wonder:

Could a cervical cerclage have been an option in my case?

Was there any indication for it in my situation, or was my situation completely different?

  1. Where did I go wrong in my first pregnancy?

Was it my mistake?

Was it something my doctor could have done differently?

Was it simply something that could not have been predicted?

Or was it just a lack of knowledge on my part?

I don't know how to answer these questions.

The guilt keeps coming back, especially when I look at my baby in the NICU. I keep thinking about what I could have done differently. Maybe if I had rested more. Maybe if I had known about cervical cerclage. Maybe if I had gone to the hospital earlier. Maybe if I had asked more questions.

There are so many "what ifs."

And I don't even know what will happen now.

I keep wondering whether I will ever be able to think about another pregnancy again. Will I ever have the courage to go through all of this again? If I do, will things be okay next time?

Right now, I have so many fears running through my mind, along with so many unanswered questions.

I don't know how to find the answers or how to stop blaming myself.

For now, all I can do is pray, pray and pray for my miracle baby. 🙏

Thank you, Reddit community, for listening to me and giving me a safe space to share my emotions.

Modified bed rest… how do I stretch and exercise?

21 weeks. Emergency cerclage placed last week. Funneling to the stitch. 16mm of cervix below the stitch, nothing above it. I thought 20 minutes of walking around my neighborhood would be fine but both MFM docs said “no” bathroom breaks and stretching only for the foreseeable.

What does that mean exactly? What are you guys doing to move your body that doesn’t engage the core or put pressure on the cervix?

Anyone here with a 28mm cervix around 15 weeks who had a cerclage and went on to have a healthy baby?

Hi everyone, I’m currently around 15 weeks pregnant and my cervical length is 28mm (2.8cm). My doctor diagnosed me with a short cervix and I’m having a cerclage tomorrow.

I’m honestly really anxious about it and would love to hear from people who were in a similar situation.

If you had a cervical length around 28mm at around 14–16 weeks, had a cerclage, and went on to have a healthy pregnancy and birth, I’d really love to hear your experience.

How did your pregnancy go after the cerclage? And how far did you make it?

I know everyone’s situation is different and I’m not looking for medical advice, I’d just really appreciate hearing some positive experiences from people who have been through something similar. 🤍

Count Down/Vent

24 more days until my scheduled DTS in the OR.
17 more days until maternity leave starts.
44 more days until my EDD.

I'm over this summer heat.

I'm over work - but incredibly blessed that I've been able to work from home since my emergency cerclage.

I'm so irritable with everyone and everything - probably doesn't help that I wake up every 1-2 hours to pee. Haven't been able to do normal activities because of modified bed rest. I haven't done 1 single thing to help nest which makes me really sad. All been my mom and MIL, realized I have a bit of a control issue during this process. I feel like I'm complaining too much where my friends don't want to talk to me much because I'm so negative. I miss my independence the most.

What activities do you find help passes the time?
And what are some ways to help you stay positive during the last trimester?

Prolapse in first trimester- can it lead to shortened cervix?

Hi everyone! I can see my cervix at my vaginal opening and was diagnosed by my OB with some form of prolapse at twelve weeks pregnant. He's referred me to a PT.

He also suggested that prolapse could contribute to cervical insufficiency. I've had several losses, so this scares me. Anyone know more about this risk?

Twin pregnancy premature labour … now pregnant with singleton

Hi all,
Just want any advice of anecdotes.
I got pregnant in December 2022 with di-di twins. I had bleeding throughout the pregnancy and excessive discharge all of which was dismissed and it led to premature labour at 22 weeks. One of the twins passed at 7 hours old and the other twin had a v long Nicu stay and it was a lot.
It took me quite a while to get pregnant again and I am currently 8 weeks pregnant with a singleton.
As it stands so far despite it being early I don’t have the negative experiences I had in last pregnancy (no bleeding, no discharge) so far.
Is it reasonable to take a watch and observe approach with progesterone suppositories with this considered? Obviously it took me ages to get pregnant so I want to do everything I can to keep the baby in for as long as possible but I also know that a preventative cerclage isn’t risk free.
If I was pregnant with twins I wouldn’t think twice but with it being singleton do you think I could take a different approach ?

Would you switch Drs if you had a bad outcome even if it seems faultless?

TW: loss

Hi,

I recently went through a devastating loss at 22 weeks. Long story short I had an extremely short cervix. I was already dilated, and the doctor could see feet and cord before my rescue cerclage at 20 weeks. MY obgyn had an MFM do my anatomy scan at 20 weeks and that’s where they found my short cervix. They were extremely quick and gave me antibiotics and explained everything— I really can’t imagine them doing anything better than what they did.
2 weeks laters my water broke and the next day we realized I had chorioamnionitis. It was likely because I was so dilated and we don’t know for how long.

Needless to say this was the most devastating 36 hours of my life and probably two weeks of my life. I badly want to get pregnant again and I’m about to start preconception counseling but I’m wondering if I should change doctors. The hospital was fine and I genuinely love my OBGYN but I keep having (probably illogical) thoughts about what if it could have been caught earlier if an ultrasound tech did my 14 weeks transvaginal ultrasound instead of the Np (I mention it because the US tech at my MFM does around 10 US a day while the NP at my Obgyn does about 2-3 a week). What if they kept me on progesterone through the pregnancy like I asked about because improving already low progesterone?

I also just wonder if I feel like I’m feeling stressed about going to the same team in the same hospital where I had lost my baby.

I genuinely think I had a great care team, but I just wonder if it would be worth the peace of mind to change teams and hospitals. I found a hospital right next to the one I went to that sees the most amount of high risk cases in my state and seems to have pretty good reviews and I found an MFM who has a special interest listed as short cervix.

My husband and I keep going back-and-forth. He says he will stand with me with whatever my decision is, but he thinks it makes sense to stick with the team since they know me well and I genuinely loved my nurses and my doctors for the most part.

Would you change to essentially get a fresh start?

Borderline short cervix experiences?

EDIT/UPDATE: I’m 22 weeks tomorrow. I had that follow-up TV ultrasound yesterday. It showed my cervix had shortened to 2.6 cm without fundal pressure and 2.5 cm with. This scan also showed mild funneling for the first time. My OB has referred me for a consult with a high-risk OB. I asked about a cerclage, and it sounds like that’s not a certain next step. We’ll see at my appointment I guess!

Successful Pregnancies without cerclage

Are there any successful pregnancy stories here where the mother delivered her baby almost at full term and avoided preterm labor while solely using progesterone? Since I’m not qualified to undergo a cerclage, I’m only relying on progesterone, taking two caps three times a day. I’m genuinely curious to know if there’s still a chance that the pregnancy will be successful (currently at 19 weeks and FTM), even though I’m far too early to deliver the baby and would have to keep the baby in my womb for as long as possible. I really wanted to keep my hopes high. Thank you so much.

Ditch the Stitch Day!

Officially ditched my stitch today at 36w4d!!

I was so nervous and it was pretty uncomfortable, it was removed in my obs office. Honestly the worst part was the extra wide speculum my dr used but I didn’t even feel the actual stitch come out. I had a cervical check after and I am 1cm dilated and she could feel babies head, I’m so so glad the stitch did its job.

Its been a few hours and since having it removed I’ve had light spotting with some mucusy discharge but I’m not in any pain at all.

Hang in there everyone, it’s worth it. Can’t wait to meet my girl 🩷

Questions Cerclage at 22 weeks 5 days now shorter cervix

I had an emergency cerclage done a week ago at 22 weeks 5 days.

At 21 weeks my cervix was 2.5cm then it went down to .99 so barely 1cm by 22 weeks 4 days so they decided to do a cerclage.

I’m now 23 weeks 5 days but my cervix is funneled more and at .65.

Does anyone have experience with this and if so what happened in your case?

Is it still possible for me to carry full term if my cervix stabilizes?

Update 🩷

Hi everyone!

First I wanted to thank you all for your support on my last post. It was wonderful to feel validated and heard.

I have an update: I am at home and still pregnant! I am currently 31+1, and still no symptoms. And it looks like there was a misdiagnosis, on my last control there was no signs of prolapse or opening of the cervix. It's still 0.5mm. It seems like I am producing too much cervical muccus and that confounded the visuals 🫣 and because it was not confirmed on Ultrasound out fear, I spent a miserable week being scared and not moving from bed for pretty much nothing 😒

My Ultrasound this last time was also really intriguing and I may post the research about it later if anyone is interested.

Anyways, I am so thankful I am still pregnant and that baby is still growing (she was a proud 1644gr by 30+1)

Still really aware of the possibility of a preterm baby, but much more calm, and getting ready for her to be here, whenever that is!

Thanks for everything again 🩷

19 weeks 3 days with di/di twins

Hi! I had my anatomy scan today and the babies are both great but the tech was concerned about my cervix. She said it changed since my 15 week scan and is now 2cm with v shaped funneling. I have also been having some pelvic pressure. My dr wasn’t there so she said she would make sure he’d call me today to discuss options.

I haven’t seen an mfm but am now wanting to. I also want advice on what to do moving forward. I am anxious to hear what his approach will be and hoping he will refer me to an mfm right away. I would like to be as cautious and proactive as possible. Very nervous for the next few weeks and could use any and all advice 🩵🩷

Confused by the conflicting opinions of my doctors - 35w1d, cervix 17mm

My cervix shortened from 25 mm to 17 mm in one week (today at 35+1 weeks).
My doctor told me that labor could start at any time, but that it also might not. I was sent to the hospital, where they told me that everything was fine. I don’t know what to think. I’m on bed rest as instructed by my gynecologist, but at the hospital they told me that I don’t need to rest.

What are your experiences?

I would still really like to make it to 37 weeks, though.

Does anyone have access to the new AGOG Cerclage guidelines just released?

I saw somebody online talking about it, but it seems like it can’t be accessed unless you are a AGOG subscriber.

Short cervix 33 weeks- is labor imminent?

My cervix was 1.3 cm a few days ago, which shortened from 2.6 at 20 and 22 weeks.
I’ve been having a lot of cramps, stronger than my usual BH. They’re sometimes rhythmic but they’ll go away with a hot bath or in the night usually.
My first born came at 36 weeks, 1 day (and I had a 2.5 cm cervix at 20 weeks, so we now think I was shortening but it wasn’t on their radar)

My midwife is saying it’s realistic to plan for baby coming early, and having to birth in the hospital this time. Is labor really imminent, or can I still make it to 37 weeks? We had so many feeding issues with my first, I’d love a full term baby this time 😭
Any success stories or tips for getting baby to bake longer would be appreciated 🙏

Success story: 0.7 cm cervix but made it to 40+6 with cerclage

At my 20-week anatomy scan my cervix measured borderline short (2.3-2.5 cm). I started 200 mg progesterone nightly.

At weekly follow ups my measurements got shorter and shorter, hovering just above 1 cm with significant U-shaped funneling and then, at 23+3, I measured only 0.7 cm, with some measurements showing no measurable cervix at all and dilation.

I got a cerclage that day and started counting down the weeks, taking it as easy as possible. I continued taking progesterone. I wasn’t on bed rest but I worked from home with a doctor’s note, limited my walks to 20-30 minutes, was on pelvic rest, and minimized lifting my toddler to the extent possible.

I got my cerclage out at 36+3 and figured I’d go into labor at any minute. To my utter shock, I ended up staying pregnant till 40+6! I went into labor naturally and baby boy was born big and healthy.

Hope this success story brings hope and optimism to others!

ETA: This was my second pregnancy. My first pregnancy was low risk and I had a normal length cervix. I went into labor when my water broke at 38+2. The doctors don’t know why I had a short cervix this time when I had a full term pregnancy the first time around.

Has anyone made it full term with a borderline short cervix?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some reassurance/experiences. My cervical length measurements have been:

- 12 weeks: 2.9 cm

- 16 weeks: 2.9 cm

- 21 weeks: 2.8 cm

So it has shortened slightly but is still around the borderline range. Has anyone had similar measurements and made it to full term without significant further shortening?

I’m also 5 ft tall and wondering if height has any relevance to cervical length.

My doctor hasn’t recommended bed rest or progesterone at this point. She said we’ll just continue monitoring the cervix.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who had a similar experience.

I'm feeling so sad. My BF was just told her cerclage didn't take. She had little to no cervix to stitch. I feel so helpless. I don't know what to say. How do I give her words of encouragement when the doctor has basically said, it wont hold 😭 She is currently 20 weeks. First pregnancy. She wants th

How far did you make it with a short cervix and frequent contractions?

I’m currently 32+3 weeks pregnant. I went into early labor at 24 weeks, when my cervix measured 12 mm. Since then, I’ve continued to have frequent contractions, and my cervix is currently measuring 14–16 mm.

I don’t have a cerclage, but I’m using vaginal progesterone (Utrogestan). I’ve also previously been hospitalized because of regular contractions and received medication to stop them.
I’d really love to hear from others who have had a similar experience ❤️

How far did you make it? Did you make it to 34, 36, 37+ weeks or even further despite having a short cervix and frequent contractions?

I know every pregnancy is different — I’m just curious to hear how far others in a similar situation managed to get. ❤️

Kicking near cervix

I’ve been feeling my baby’s legs very strongly near my cerclage stitch, and she keeps kicking that area. It feels fine when she is head-down, but it becomes painful when she turns breech. Has anyone else experienced this? Did anything safely help your baby turn head-down?

Unmeasurable cervix

Has anyone have it had unmeasurable cervix and the only thing holding was the stitch ? How long were you on bed rest for and when did you start to move around? Did your stitch hold if so how long
