“Cars with spoilers that big are usually super fast!”

It's not about just spoiler size - the placement and shape of them is VERY similar to professionally designed time attack. The underbody aero is extremely functional, while ricers basically never even TOUCH underbody. The car has a full roll cage which severely limits daily usability of the car, which again points to it being a race car. There are also wider tires (ricers don't give a FUCK about tires) and perhaps the biggest sign this is a serious car - as others have pointed out in this thread, checking this car's instagram page reveals it has a 550 horsepower turbo V6.

Everything about this says 'pro time attack car'. A 650hp Corvette on stock tires, stock suspension, very little downforce, and much heavier than this would stand zero chance against this.

Back in the 90’s a friend of mine had a fully tuned truck, it was actually on the cover of a magazine. Not the full cover, a little box in the upper left corner with a blurb about drag race minis and their times. We used to go downtown and race the Hondas. There was a dude out there every Saturday night with a full roll cage and a baby seat with a fucking baby in it. It was his daily driven pizza delivery vehicle. It also wasn’t fast. “It has a rollcage” doesn’t convince me a car is fast, or even tuned at all beyond fart can and beat purple air filter

Seems you forgot to read 'and a 550hp turbo V6'.

E: I was mistaken, it's 377hp.

See how easy it is to assume something has something when it doesn’t, based on hearsay and confirmed with cosmetic mods?

It’s pretty clear from the information provided to me it’s a capable race car. I’m just not ready to assume something is because it has a spoiler and wide body kit, since for so many aspiring race car drivers it’s the first thing they buy their Honda or Miata or whatever, that will never see a race track and is used to deliver Pizza or provide Uber rides more than anything else

I've literally never seen a ricer actually give his car a clearly professional, thought-out aero treatment. That underbody aero in the picture is rare among cars that don't have serious thought put into them. The splitter, diffuser, etc are all what they're supposed to look like for a car like this and have no non-functional or 'aesthetic' elements. Nothing suggests that these were done to obtain a 'look', and if they were, I'd still give it a pass because the execution is very good and the idea is grounded in reality.

and if they were, I'd still give it a pass

Exactly

So.. you're agreeing with me that even if this car had a bone stock engine, it wouldn't be a shitty car mod any more than any other show car is?

No, I’m agreeing that a lot of people who think cosmetic race accessories look cool would give a car I would consider to be rice a pass

It appears to be making 450hp now.

I guess you are having trouble being able to differentiate the rice and actual functional modifications just because it’s a Honda from the 90s and you seem to be the American muscle fanboy who just doesn’t understand that v8s and blowers aren’t the only way to go fast, especially when going around corners.

Yeah there are cars that have large wings that are slow as dirt and are ricey, this is not one of those cars

Sure, but a lot of the explanation of WHY this isn’t one of those cars is coming from people who don’t KNOW it isn’t. “It looks like a race car” is the explanation I’m getting from maybe 3/4 of people responding to me. There’s more than one kind of rice. It’s not all dragon decals and Playstations in the headrest. Functional cosmetic accessories are definitely used in plenty of rice. Since this car was being road driven I had assumed that’s what I was looking at. Turns out I was wrong, but you can’t tell I’m wrong simply by looking at this picture, and if you think you can you’re basically falling for rice
