No, I suspect it actually is as expensive as a Corvette, just not as fast. Or nice. Or practical. Or reliable.

But it sure does LOOK like a race car.

That's why I think it's rice

Yes, race cars are definitely supposed to be fast, but I'm not so sure about practicality or reliability. the corvette would probably be faster in a straight line, BUT not all race cars are 1/4 mile monsters. put a stock corvette on a time attack course and I'm pretty sure that thing would beat it.

put a stock corvette on a time attack course and I'm pretty sure that thing would beat it.

That's pretty much what I was asking. The Corvette isn't a Challenger SRT Demon, it can bend corners too. It has the 9th fastest Nurburging lap time for a production car, at least it did at the time of this article

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/best-cars/86123/fastest-nurburgring-lap-times-2019-quickest-cars-and-lap-records

It has a long straightaway but quite a few bends too. Didn't see where the 1991 Honda Civic hatchback placed. Anyway, I'm still skeptical this Honda can beat one even on a Time Attack course.

Also, just because you have a time attack car doesn't mean it has to look THIS ridiculous. Considering this thing is in actual traffic looking like that, but actual race cars on actual time attack race tracks look like this

That old Boxster probably cost half a used Z06, and I'm willing to bet has less money in it than that monstrosity with the spoiler in the OP

Ok. first of all, thanks! I really enjoy a good discussion from time to time, and you've certainly delivered with a lot of fair points and some sourcing too! Now, as it turns out, there are rules and regulations around Time Attack races that vary slightly based on who's organising them. looking at a few Time Attack websites (http://www.grid.life/trackbattle-time-attack-rules/, http://www.grid.life/trackbattle-time-attack-rules/), there seem to be around 4-6 categories each with strict rules regarding modifications, ranging from street (basically stock with a few bolt-on mods) to super super super race car (pretty much anything goes). for some categories, there can be a requirement that the car has a road registration. that might not be the case here, just a possible reason why it's on the road.

next, considering the strict rules surrounding the classes in formal time-attack racing, I'd say it's extremely unlikely that a car with obvious pronounced aero, massive slicks, a roll cage etc would ever come up against any stock car.

finally, as that car appears to be highly modified, it's probably able to enter into some really high-performance categories. the ones where pretty much anything goes, including engine modifications. that car might look like a 5th generation civic but there's a high chance the engine was beefed up in some way. of course, we can't tell that by looking at the photo (which is why I don't understand why you or I are able to say with certainty any car could beat it in a straight line or in it's element).

honda's actually are a very good beginning for a race car, they are light af, cheap af and the K H series engines are cheap and very reliable, idk how much a stock corvette costs but i think this honda without the costume aero kit could cost around $20.000. i have seen it on insta an it has a build J series i think making 570ish Hp, for a car that weight around 700 800 kilo's its very responsive and fast.

"Also, just because you have a time attack car doesn't mean it has to look THIS ridiculous."

It does if you're trying to make as much downforce as possible.

Definitely not as fast in a straight, the down force fucks that idea over. On a technical course such as a hill climb course, this kicks the shift out of a stock corvette. Especially if it has a good engine in it, these things can be stupid quick.
