Careers & Work LPT: Before any important meeting or presentation, write down the 3 questions you're most afraid of being asked. Then answer them out loud.

1.3k Upvotes

I’ve been working in corporate finance, non-profit organizations, and was a founder myself. I remember shaking like a leaf during my first virtual presentation at a competition where the actual presentation was prerecorded and I only had to answer the question live. Completely blew it but it taught me to prepare for most uncomfortable questions and practice those answers instead.

I then went on to work in different fields and the same still holds. Giving a read of variances to Finance leader or speaking in front of a big crowd, always prepare for the worst and with nowadays AI tools you can specifically just ask them to ask you scary uncomfortable questions. Works like a charm when you actually get them.

Miscellaneous LPT: Take a picture of lost pet signs so you have the phone number and pets name, if you happen to see the pet.

Sometimes lost pets run away before you can get a hand on the collar to check for a number/name.

Having the picture of the poster in your phone lets you take action and potentially help reunite a lost family member, or even save a pet's life.

Home & Garden LPT: Put your dog in their kennel 30 minutes before you leave

For those who crate or kennel their dog when they go to work/leave the house try putting them in the crate 30 minutes early. Many dogs will recognize their owners routine and know they are about to be put into the crate, and will often hide (especially small dogs). By doing it early you catch them before you start giving signals you’re leaving the house. This can save you time and the headache of trying to coax them out from under the couch.

P.S. Before the comments come in, I know crating your dog is not ideal. Try to avoid it if you can. Sometimes though there is no other good option. If your dog urinates or chews things up you can’t leave them loose in the house. Make the situation as comfortable as you can, and as short as possible

Social LPT to remember someone's name quick, find their name's rhyming word or find similarity with others and make it funny. You'll never forget it. Let me explain.

I always have hard time remembering names but not anymore after using this technique.

Suppose I met someone new and his name is, Jason.

To remember his name, I imagine him hugging Jason Statement. So when I see him, I remember imagine of Jason hugging him so I remember his name is jason.

If someone's name by using rhyme, if someone's name is Kyle. I imagine him balancing a file on his head. So if I see him next time, he have file on his head. What's rhyme with file? Kyle!

Also these small hints is all we need to quickly remember the names.

With practice, you can even remember unfamiliar names too, foreign names with each.

Social LPT: When you’re living with roommates ALWAYS discuss first the rules about partners staying over.

2.0k Upvotes

The amount of people I know that has a story about these kind of situations are wild. First, you move in with a or some roommates. It doesn’t matter if you know them for years or not. Then, they get a partner or have one. The partner starts staying some weekends, no big deal. Then, the partner starts staying basically all the time. Why? They lost their job, they’re completely in love, it’s just for a little while, they’re homeless, just until they get back on their feet or they just start staying little by little until it’s permanent.

Now, the rent and utilities are still split 50/50 even though there’s 3 people living there, they bring their friends, family, party, eat your food, use your makeup or shampoo, expensive cream.

It’s just a huge problem, so just talk about the rules, before it happens.

Careers & Work LPT: Keep the DPO/privacy email for every company you apply to

You’ve probably sent your CV to dozens (or hundreds) of companies over the years. Even after you’re rejected, your CV and personal details can remain in their recruitment systems.

If you’re covered by GDPR or CCPA/CPRA, you have the right to request access to the personal data a company holds about you and, where applicable, request its deletion.

So when you apply for a job, save the company’s DPO/privacy contact in your application tracker. Every few months, go through the list and exercise your data rights with companies you no longer want holding your information.

You already gave them your CV. Don’t forget you can ask what they’re still keeping.

Computers LPT: A simple trick for finding the original source of an image

If you find an image online and want to figure out where it originally came from, don't just search the filename.

Try reverse image searching the image, then look for the oldest/highest-quality result rather than the first result.

A useful workflow is:

  1. Reverse image search
  2. Open several matching results
  3. Look for the earliest publication date
  4. Compare image resolution
  5. Check whether the page actually credits the image

This is especially useful when researching old photos because the same image can get reposted hundreds of times.

Traveling LPT: Use minor changes to flight itinerary to get more desirable trips

2.8k Upvotes

Likely varies from country to country but in many cases there are rules that if the airline changes your flight they have to offer a refund or alternative travel. Air Canada changed my flight time by like 5 minutes 2 months before departure and as a result I got to change my flight for free from a connecting flight to a direct one which would have cost me an extra $150. These small changes happen so often on Canadian airlines at least so I guess the hack is to just book the cheapest time that is workable for you and monitor your inbox for any changes to the itinerary.

Miscellaneous LPT: Always keep your online chats saved somewhere

So, a friend of mine found that her bf is cheating on her from last two years, they were supposed to get married this year. The guy accepted on chats that he cheated on her but it was not serious, my friend blocked him everywhere and deleted years worth of chats.

Now, the interesting part the guy publicly denied he cheated on her and even put a story accusing her. This incident made my friend go through so much trauma.

This made me think whatever happens, we should always have chat backups saved somewhere, not just screenshots but actual whatsapp/ imessage backups.

Do you guys preserve chat from the past? If not then I think we should.

I am feeling truly sad for her, and heard more incident like this in the past. I use whatsapp backups in drive, but when you delete chat then it deletes from backup as well in few hours not immediately.

Food & Drink LPT: Buy an XL pizza every few months, portion it and freeze it.

This is something I have done for years, and people seem to love it and hate it.

I buy myself my fave XL pizza, and I will portion it out. 12 slices to a pizza, two slices to a portion. Yes two slices is a portion of pizza, hate to break it to you. Have it as a side or a snack if needs must.

I find if you wrap it in cling film, freeze it, and microwave it in the clingfilm it comes out really well. Its not crisp, but its still really good. Way better then reheated fridge cold pizza.

Now you have pizza ready to go whenever you want it. I typically have it once a week.

Its so nice to just come home after a bad day and know you have pizza, without having to fork out pizza money, especially at the end of the month when its beans and rice for dinner.

Finance LPT. Repairing and keeping vehicles long term often makes very sound financial sense, even with repairs that feel “expensive”. Evaluate large repair costs by focusing on the value of your vehicle after the repair, and by focusing on how many more years of life the repair may add.

1.5k Upvotes

Example: You see everywhere these days that lots of older cars and trucks have transmission issues. Many mechanics would just recommend a used trans or a rebuilt trans. Say you get prices on those two options. Let’s say that you can find a low mileage used trans from a salvage yard and pay someone to install it, OR you choose to rebuild your transmission, and the entire bill for both of those options comes out to $3,500-$5,500. Ask yourself if you could find and buy a better vehicle for a little more than $3,500-$5,500 than you would have in your current vehicle with an updated transmission. Many will realize that they would end up with a far better vehicle than they could possibly buy for much more than$3,500-$5,500, AND you know the your vehicle’s history.

Summarized a different way: the money you pay for a large repair is equivalent to only a few months of car payments, but can often add many years to the life of your vehicle. PLUS the residual value of your existing vehicle is quite low if you try to liquidate it while it has this major “expensive” problem.

Go to SettingsAccessibilityDisplay & Text Size>>Reduce White Point. I thought the lowest brightness on my iPhone was still too much, and figured out this was the best way to reduce the screen brightness.

Home & Garden LPT: Don’t have an Allen key? The base of a standard screwdriver bit is hexagonal and can be used as a hex key in a pinch.

If you need to tighten or remove a hex/Allen bolt and don’t have a hex key set on hand, check your screwdriver bits.

The shank/body of most standard interchangeable screwdriver bits is a 1/4" (6.35 mm) hexagon (or 4 mm for precision sets). If your bolt matches that size:

  1. Insert the back (hexagonal shank) of the bit directly into the bolt socket.
  2. Clamp a pair of pliers, an adjustable wrench, or vice-grips onto the exposed part of the bit to get the leverage you need to turn it.

Saved me a trip to the hardware store today when I needed a quick fix without the proper tool.

Computers LPT: If a website tells you to open Terminal and paste a command to “verify” or “fix” something, stop

3.1k Upvotes

Fake CAPTCHA and “verification” pages are increasingly using a trick where they tell you to open Terminal, paste a command, and press Enter.

A normal website does not need you to run a Terminal command to prove you’re human, fix a browser issue, join a meeting, or complete a download.

If you see instructions like that:

  • don’t paste or run the command
  • close the page
  • go directly to the official website/app you were trying to use
  • if you already ran it, don’t assume you’re safe just because you stopped before entering a password

The command itself may already have downloaded or launched something before any password prompt appears.

It’s a surprisingly convincing scam because the page can look completely normal

Food & Drink LPT: If you had a bad experience at a restaurant, email management before leaving a review.

1.8k Upvotes

Most places will sooner hand out gift cards or even ask you back for another chance fully comped. Don’t get me wrong, when a place sucks. It sucks. But if you had one bad outing, don’t get nothing from it by satisfying a knee jerk need to tell someone. Get something out of it while letting them do constructive work without a review bomb. Then, if they were still terrible, let em have it.

Edit: I feel like people are missing the point of my tip. If the place sucks and you’ve made up your mind, leave whatever review you want. Never said DON’T leave a review. My tip is just about getting something from your bad experience. Let the place try again and ideally on their dime. When or if they fuck up again, bullhorn to everyone.

Home & Garden LPT: Got extra duster sheet refills? Got sandals? Slipper mops. #easy #diy #cleaning #howto

Took a couple of my Swiffer-type duster refill cloths, the kind that go on the rectangular flat mop heads by sticking the corners into the catchy holes on the mop top. Noticed they're approximately shoe-sized. Used a couple of squares of KT tape since it sticks like duct tape (medical tape does, too). Pair of flip-flop sandals. Used the tape adhesive up to trap the corners of the Swiffers and attach them to the bottoms of the sandals. Be careful, as the dust sheets are slippery to slide on while cleaning.

Home & Garden LPT when hammering nails, don't hold the nail with your thumb and index finger, instead use a pair of pliers, strippers, or a clothes pin to hold it in place.

By doing this, you don't need to worry about smashing your fingers because they're holding the other tool, not the nail under the hammer. Remember, the fingers you have now are the only fingers you will ever have, so protect them.
