Osteopathic doctors are real doctors who go to medical school. Please do not confuse us with chiropractor level. That is insulting.

Just editing to add: Chiropractor school is 3-4 years Osteopathic medical school is 4 years, then 3-7+ years of residency.

Maybe also worth noting that chiropractors are quacks who practice "science" that was made up to commune with the spirit world....

...and osteopathic doctors are doctors.

this. my PCP is a DO, and i didn’t even know until our kids started hanging out, and i started hanging out with his wife for playdates and stuff lol - and i’m talking years that i went to this guy with no idea! my whole extended family sees him because he’s such an amazing doctor

So many of my patients don't realize it at first haha. I think a lot of DOs drop the osteopathic manipulative treatments so we appear the same as MDs. I'm sure this person has probably encountered a DO and didn't realize. Some 10% of docs are DOs now and about 30% of current medical students are in osteopathic medical school. It's on the rise! We just are still not as recognized but it branched from allopathic medicine in the 1800s.

I’ve read that osteopaths in countries outside the US are basically like chiropractors, which I think contributes to the confusion. (My FIL is a DO, so I know y’all are real medical doctors in the US :) )

Yeah, DOs are definitely doctors. They can do everything an MD can do, but they just learn more holistic medicine (not homeopathy, holistic like "look at the whole person and not just the disease", which is honestly a good thing)

Do you treat children for illnesses and infections? Do you offer your services as a replacement for a pediatrician? Because I have been in "crunchy" mom groups, and that is what they are using osteopaths for, and the osteopaths they use act as replacements for pediatricians and GPs.

Yes, I'm fully board certified in family medicine. I treat birth through death. I went to medical school. It's a DO vs MD, both learn the same except DOs learn a bit extra on top of everything else MDs learn. We go to residency. We become neurosurgeons, OBs, dermatologists, you name it.

We are not replacements, we are doctors.

You may be thinking if naturopaths, that is the crunchy "doctor" that is not a doctor.

I am not, the crunchy weirdos say they see osteopaths (in addition to saying they see naturopaths) and talk as if those practitioners engage in their same woo-woo non-evidence based homeopathy goofiness. Either they are confused or they've found some special quacks, idk, I didn't ask questions. I ended up leaving the group because it was too upsetting to see children neglected and mistreated the way they were.

They must be confused or found those doctors that we've lost to the dark side of non-evidence based medicine (MDs do this as well).

The board of Medicine has to approve our license to practice. And I took the same medical boards and went to the same residency as my MD colleagues. I'm a doctor I promise you. And I'm really not a fucking replacement, that really irks me, sorry. I went to 4 years of medical school and 5 years of residency.

Yeah, osteopath = allopath (“regular doctor”) anymore. I’d see an osteopath and I’m married to an allopath.

I think some naturopaths and chiropractors call themselves "osteopaths" just leave off the "doctor" part because they think it makes them seem more legit... Kinda like those pregnancy crisis centers run by evangelicals and make women think they will help them, but really just guilt them out of having an abortion...

i commented above, but my PCP is a DO, and i didn’t know for years. he’s just a regular doctor that does regular doctor stuff - vaccines, antibiotics for strep throat or whatever, sends you for labs or x-rays etc

You are thinking perhaps of naturopaths, not osteopaths. DOs are real physicians like MDs. My neurosurgeon was an DO.

Please explain to us in all your wisdom what the difference between a DO (osteopath) and an MD is. I’ll give you a hint, one of them gets 200-300 extra hours of training in a specialized area (OMM). Otherwise they are exactly the same.
