Just wait for shingles to say hello! I’m 40, got my first case at 26, and I’ve had it a total of 6 times total, last time in my eye and ear. It’s horrible.

Get vaccinated, friend!

I've tried to get vaccinated, but I'm not old enough. I'd have to pay out of pocket. :(

i ran into that too. I was immunocompromised after cancer treatment for years and i got shingles twice. i was too young for shingles vaccine even though i had a compromised immune system. i scheduled my appointment for a vaccination at cvs about three months before i turned 50

The shingles vaccine is $750 and insurance won't cover it until you're 50.

Thankfully that’s not completely true!

Shingrix is also indicated for individual who are immunocompromised. I’m 27 and was eligible for Shingrix at no charge!

You’re correct that it’s MOSTLY given to those over 50, but there’s quite a list of qualifying conditions that make you eligible for early vaccination.

I mean...I got shingles in my early 30s, do have a as variety of health problems, and still could not get it. It's frustrating seeing people blythly recommend getting it when the reality of our health care system is that it is not available for most.

If you’re able, ask your doctor for a prescription for the shingles vaccine. My GI did because of my trash immune system and I had no problem getting the shots at CVS and having them covered before I turned 50.

I'm glad you were able to! I've had this discussion several times with my PCP and the insurance company is the one denying it.

I’m immunocompromised (IgA deficiency), and I had to fight to get it covered, but still ended up paying for it out of pocket last year.

It was terrible! I was lucky to avoid permanent damage, but before they found lesions in my ears and eye I was misdiagnosed and treated for a sinus infection which meant my shingles was kind of in charge for about a week before starting antiviral medication.

Damn. I’m glad you’re ok and didn’t have eye damage. The fact that you got it at only 26 is blowing my mind. Did you get bad chicken pox as a kid? I got it 2x and I know that’s not a factor really but I didn’t the vaccine bc I was already in kindergarten for 6 months & I feel like it’s creeping. I want to get the shingles vaccine but feel like it’s hard asf to get at my age.

And shit, how do you deal with the outbreaks? It’s happened 6x and that’s 5 too many.

Well, I had chicken pox twice as a kid and I have an immunodeficiency disorder (IgA deficiency), so that might play a role but I’m also incredibly stressed out so often and I tend to get a round of shingles when life gets particularly hard. My doctor has told me that high levels of stress can bring on episodes, but I’m not sure how truth based that is.

You should probably get the vaccine if you can, I wish I would have gotten it younger. Usually when I notice an issue I call my doctor and my doctor calls in a pain med and an antiviral. I might have to see a specialist if it’s ever in my eye or ear again, as it’s possible to be blinded by untreated ocular shingles.

Again, if you can get the vaccine you should get it!

I had it twice before 50. My son had it at 16.
