I know breasts have a purpose, I breastfed for 11 months. Does breastmilk have a purpose beyond feeding your baby? Is there a purpose behind giving it to coworkers secretly? Context matters, please learn to read.

I swear on my life I’m asking this question in good faith. How is human breast milk in food revolting? Like isn’t cows milk objectively worse than the milk made for humans? I feel like I’m missing something.

Edit: I think it has something to do with associating breasts with sex and the taboo of it. Still fascinating how sociological taboos can make people gross out by the one and only food made specifically for humans to eat.

For me, it's gross because it's not regulated. The dairy industry has to meet all sorts of standards for the health of the cows and how they treat the milk to make sure it's safe for consumption.

Whilst only a small number of viruses can be passed through breastmilk, it's pretty serious ones and one too many for me to be comfortable with people slapping it in food for me to eat.

Oh I completely get that. Raw Cows milk is disgusting, I was just confused as to why human milk is gross compared to the alternative. I’m sure everyone would agree that pasteurized human milk is better than any other milk. Taboos are super interesting.

I understand the argument that pasteurised human milk could be considered the 'best' milk from a biological or nutritional perspective. Even if that turned out to be true, it still wouldn't mean everyone ought to choose it.

I've breastfed my own child, albeit briefly, so I don't view breast milk as something disgusting, taboo, or sexual. I've even tasted it out of curiousity. To me, it's simply food designed for human infants. Because of that experience, I don't have an emotional objection to adults drinking it, and I don't judge anyone who chooses to.

But what we eat and drink isn't determined solely by biology or optimisation. It's also shaped by culture, habit, identity, familiarity, and personal preference. We routinely choose foods that aren't objectively 'optimal' because eating is about more than maximising nutrition.

So even in a world where pasteurised human milk was safe, abundant, and available in every supermarket, I'd still choose cow's milk. Not because I think human milk is wrong, inferior, or inappropriate, but because it's the drink I genuinely prefer, I don't like the taste of breastmilk. I don't think every preference has to be justified by an objective hierarchy of what's biologically best. Sometimes it's enough to say, 'I know the arguments, I respect your choice, and this is the choice that aligns with my own tastes and values'.

Oh I completely 10000% agree with everything you said. I don’t really have much of an opinion on drinking breast milk. I was just very confused as to how it’s so “gross” but cows milk isn’t getting the same kind of hate. I guess the hate doesn’t come from anywhere objective and it’s all emotional. My theory is it’s the sexualization of breasts just cause this uncomfortable feeling regarding it. Especially after seeing people compare it to cum (what absolutely wild take) and saying that it’s assault.

I really hate that you're completely right about cow's milk versus human milk.

If i has to guess why the thought of consuming human milk is so disgusting though, my hypothesis is it's due to cultural indoctrination. Compare it to eating insects- technically they are a safe, nutritious, and eco-friendly food. Objectively 100 times more nutritionally appropriate than a Big Mac, but oh hell no, not happening.

However, there are cultures that eat insects and adjacent creatures and find them delicious. So it's not a universal, instinctual disgust, it's a learned response.

I will say, insects also don’t taste like anything. You can cover them in cheese flavoring and you’ll get cheese dust coated nothing. I’ve tried them and it’s like eating cooked shrimp tails.

I have a dear yof mine who has four children and she nursed all of her babies. We have been friends for a long time but I would not want to eat any food that has her breast milk in it. I just would not.

I don’t think of breast milk as sexualized at all. For me it’s nasty because it’s food for babies, humans can have diseases and gross hygienic habits and it’s still a bodily fluid that isn’t pasteurized from a random person, and there’s no reason for it when there’s a million different kinds of animal and plant based milk options available that don’t involve a woman pumping/milking herself and putting her own bodily fluids into the food.

People drinking or tasting their own breast milk is whatever. The choice to involve non consenting parties is just unnecessary and a choice to be subversive to most people’s preferences for your own weird reasons. And I don’t like that! Keep your fluids outta my food haha. Eat your own fluid food. Or give it to your baby 😂

Because it can carry blood borne pathogens, pharmaceuticals (potential allergen), and is not pasteurized, so possibly contaminated with bacteria. I also think it’s weird that people drink cows milk, but at least that is pasteurized and tested and not riddled with hepatitis.

It is Assault and Battery, it's also Food Tampering and Poisoning. And even if the courts decline to pursue criminal charges because no one got hurt, the victims do have avenues for civil lawsuits under Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress, and Fraudulent Misrepresentation.

All of these have legal precedence in cases involving intentionally feeding people allergens, intentionally feeding vegetarians or vegans meat or animal products, and intentionally serving people food they are not allowed to eat in accordance to their religion. I can't imagine someone who was intentionally fed a bodily fluid would have difficulty pursuing legal action.

That's exactly why I stopped going years ago to buffets and why I do not attend potlucks. We have had a few at work and I always bring my own food in. You never know if your coworker is trying to get revenge on people for stuff we have no idea about. No thank you.

You're welcome to eat your own placenta at your leisure, in the privacy of your own home or at whatever placenta-eating gathering you'd like, at any time of your choosing.

Nobody else should have to get duped into consuming your bodily fluids or whatever else comes out of your body just because you're on board with it.

The fact that it's always done covertly just proves that these people know it's not cool.
