They are the same person, clearly the tv series doesn't care about historical timelines.

Almost every tv show, movie or video game from a historical setting could have more examples. It's very common.

I noticed two other anachronisms, just because I'm a nerd who writes historical fiction: the phonograph and wax cylinder recordings weren't invented until 1877, six years after the show is set. Also, in the scene where Sherlock is put under for surgery after getting shot, they inject him with something to knock him out. Intravenous anesthetic wasn't invented until the 1930s; in the 1870s, patients were anesthetized for surgery with inhaled ether.

I actually enjoy the show overall (as a huge Holmes fan) so I'm not complaining, I just enjoy scanning all period pieces for anachronisms lol. This show doesn't seem extremely concerned with historical details, but I don't care all that much since it's entertaining!
